Sir….THANK YOU! Like yours, mine was aerated but wasn’t really that low. I put some fluid in and topped it off, rotated the steering wheel a few times and the noise immediately got much quieter. I do have a leak and when I swiped some from the ground the other day, it was clear. I wasn’t sure which fluid was clear but with that awful noise every time I turned and even when I drove, I just knew it was power steering. The only thing that deterred me from thinking it was, is because I wasn’t having any issues steering. Apparently that isn’t an indicator. Although the noise went from about a 10 to a 3, I still think I may need a pump. But this video helped me tremendously! I had watched so many other videos that never demonstrated the actual noise so I had no clue what to look at. THANK YOU!!! You definitely have a new subscriber!

The rack was replaced on my 2000 Ford Ranger last April. Went to mechanic months later for an oil change or something and was told the rack they installed had a manufacturer defect. I asked for a tune-up (estimate was $450-$500) so I needed to save the $ for it, and was told they'd replace the rack when they did the tune-up. When I took the truck back in, I was told there was no need for the tune-up, but the power steering pump had to be replaced and told that was the cause of the rack issue. Rack was still under warranty, but I was charged $360 labor to replace the rack. Total bill was $996.29 (Replace warranty rack, replace power steering pump, power steering fluid, oil change, replace tailgate handle, and replace front head lamps). Didn't think my bill would be THAT high. The headlight lamps were $90 each and charged $140 labor for their install. $28.02 of the bill was a credit card fee. I felt like I shouldn't have had to pay a penny for the rack replacement or the credit card fee (no fee if paying with cash). Am I wrong?

That was helpful. I hear a grinding sound sometimes when I make a left turn. I fixed that or put some trans tune in the power steering I went under the truck, I noticed that both boots on the large side did not have a tie or a clamp so I put ties on it but now I'm going to check them to make sure that there's no oil coming out they're both dry but I'm going to check again. But then I started hearing whining sound I don't know if it's from my brakes because the whiting stops when I break. The power steering did go out one day fully did not have any power steering that's when I put the translated and it fixed it I think for the most part stop making that sound somebody told me I need to hold you racket but he never even looked he just wanted to buy my truck I'm going to go back and check everything this video is very helpful I like the way you pointed everything out made it easy for me.

I also added a thicker 10-30 semi syn instead of 5-30 to the engine to shelp with burn.. about a quart as it does have 240k for miles. Now there is a whine from the front. it seems like power steering but does not get louder with revs or when I turn the wheel. all the Guages are reading fine.

If I have a small leak in the power steering rack would I get a loud whine from the pump? I don’t lose any noticeable fluid when I check the reservoir but have installed a new pump and it whines louder than my factory pump with 120k miles on it. Wondering if it’s a bad reman pump from the dealer or if one of my other aged steering components would contribute to this. I am assuming it is the pump because this noise is louder and new and I don’t see any major leaking or loss of fluid.

As soon as I had the alternator changed in my 2010 Toyota Corolla the following day starting it up I could hear a loud squealing noise similar to this one. If I turned it on and off a few times it would stop. Driving seems okay. But if I turn the wheel all the way to the left or right it starts to squeal again. Also strange is when I go to stop "or" put the power windows up or down it hesitates like it's trying to stall out on me. Been dealing with it for about 2 months. I took the car back as soon as it started to happen and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Any suggestions. Power steering issue or bad alternator replacement? Battery and alternator both brand new within 2 months.

So let me explain what’s going on with my power steering. The steering is never hard to turn and the reservoir is never low. I have a 2015 Infiniti Q70L that requires an ATF fluid. My power steering pump randomly makes noise at idle. The ATF fluid is clean and is replaced every 50,000 miles. Currently my Infiniti has 156,000 miles. I performed a vacuum test at 20 pounds of mercury and it passed the test for five minutes. Even though it’s been vacuum tested is there anyway an air pocket could be present in the system? Or is my power steering pump simply need to be replaced? Thankfully I can purchase a brand new Hitachi Power steering pump which happens to be the OEM provider for a reasonable price. Keep in mind I am a rideshare driver that is on the road constantly picking up passengers.

Rather than top it off, I suck the fluid out of the reservoir with a turkey baster and fill it with Lucas premium power steering fluid. I have found this to noticeably improve performance of the system. They also have a product with stop-leak, if you think you have a small leak it might help.

Hi I have a power steering leak .. might be a line/ hose/ pump but was told the whole rack needs to be replaced .. they don’t just replace a hose .. that said , it totally drains during driving , never when parked … I accidently over filled the fluid .. as soon as it over flowed I stopped .. it leaked over the cap area… 2005 toyota rav 4.. should I be worried .. do I need to to remove the extra .. I don’t want to damage anything .. belts .. battery . Engine .. help anyone … and how much is a rack .. thank you Also my cas cap door cover( not the cap) broke so its open .. I smell gas when parked … is that normal .. fumes. Escape from door

Yep. My pressure hose was leaking. Never got around to fixing it because I thought it was oil… until I seen the steering fluid bubbling and dripping from the line.. been like that for about a month so I may need to replace my pump. Huh?

I had a shop replace my pump with a new napa part. I knew enough to look at the reservoir at home to make sure they changed the fluid w/ new. They did but filled it to just about an inch below the cap. A few days later I took it to them and said research tells me the max and min lines are there for a reason and had them extract to correct amount. Then I asked if they bleed the new pump and was told that (99 corollas) was self-bleeding and take about 500 miles to do it. After the fluid level was fixed several weeks later It was making noise. So the mech. put more in it and it quite it a few more weeks. Then started prob.again. This time the level was same as when he added but more than the max line. So when it drove it 2 miles to shop. The level went way down to about an inch. That was a large dump of fluid and have to wait over week-end to take it back in. This is at the 4th or 5th time I've had to take it in since the new pump was put on. Also the owner claimed 30 yrs. experience and told me it didn't matter if the reservoir was overfilled. Any feedback is welcome.

Same thing happened to me every 3 weeks i would have to fill it up with steering fluid. I went to a shop and told the guy its probably a hose but he insisted that its the power stearing pump that need to be replaced, it cost me 500 dollars. Now it leaks alot more that I’ve had to fill it up 3 times in 2 weeks. After doing more research on my own its the idle switch and hose, parts that are alot cheaper and easier to fix. Seems like alot of mechanics have no common sense or just look for the most expensive fix to do. so pissed off with this guy because the owner of the shop is a good guy but he is older now so this newer guy does most of the repairs. Most places are like this also, they dont help or care because of all the cars they have to fix, they make things worse so you can go back in for another repair.

Hey so I have this issue on my car however the fluid isn’t running low and and their are no bubbles it is however leaking pretty badly. Is it possible that I damaged my power steering pump despite me not being low on fluid?

Make sure you have the correct fluid. For instance if it's a toyota they take atf fluid, not power steering. Check your rack for leaks too. Good luck.

my 02 chrysler sebring makes this shrieking, squealing sound only when I turn the steering wheel to the left or to the right it starts out strong in the morning, but after giving it, it’s like morning stretches turning the wheel all the way to the right and then to the left and then doing it back-and-forth Eventually it stops shreaking while I drive it doesn’t do it when I make any turns or anything only if the car has stopped and has been driven for a few hours. it sounds like it might be coming from the power steering pump but honestly, I don’t want to risk it and swap out the part for nothing.

I've heard if the steering wheel is crooked significantly, it is certainly a problem w/power steering rack (as far as I understand the problem can't be fixed then just by simply moving in and out Outer Tie Rods in corresponding directions). Mine is crooked ~45 degrees to the right, no steering fluid leeks observed (I saw some fluid inside of the boot ~ 8 months ago, when changed Inner TR (on driver side only, on passenger it was dry), but I think it is very small, since the fluid level doesn't change). I don't remember when that problem w/crooked wheel developed, I don't drive that car a lot, but I hit a limiting concrete bar which they conveniently locate at some parking lot 4-5 days ago, and noticed 45 degrees after that event. So what can happen to a steering rack, what can be wrong, if no leak observed? The car is 2003 Chevy Cavalier. Thank you very much for the informative film.

I'll have to check. I've been looking all day to tell if I need pump replacement or rack and pinion and finally found an answer. So if I look at that seal and there's no leak on the rack and pinion I'm just looking at power steering pump.

I have a 2007 Toyota Camry. After I got an oil change I started to hear the noise. After A few days I watched this video but was just gonna pay 155.00 for the dealer to check it. Something told me to try to add fluid before I spent that money. Just today I added steering fluid and boom it’s gone so try adding fluid first before you get banged by the dealer. It’s only 8.00 bucks. Thanks for this video.
