Ah yes! No more trying to position the radio just right and then that static pops up just at the WORST time in your favorite song. FM seemed like a pure miracle.

This song for me encompasses all of Steely Dan's talent where you hear Rhythm & Blues, Funk, Rock, Pop and Jazz all on in one song.

That pocket Jeff Porcaro on drums creates is so deep!

Other Steely Dan songs: Do It again, Night by night, Deacon blues, King of the world, Kid Charlemagne, Haitian divorce. But all their production is stellar, no filler or bad songs in their albums!

That may possibly be the best saxophone solo in history.

Anything off Gaucho, Aja or The Nightfly is stellar!!!

I grew up when we went from AM to FM radio and this song is the perfect soundtrack to that time.

Steely Dan wins that whole desert island hypothetical in my opinion. I love The Beatles and The Stones and Zeppelin and Chicago and Pink Floyd and Tool and Queen and yada yada, but... For some reason the Steely Dan catalog is the bestest for desolate isolation. Along with The Doobie Brothers they owned the whole yacht rock genre. And if you're gonna be shipwrecked...

Steely Dan is one of those rare groups where you can choose any random song to hear from their catalog and it will make you want more. Next recommended Steely Dan song: “Black Cow”

Steely Dan" Black Cow ", and everything else they ever did.They are phenominal.Michael McDonald was once with Steely Dan as a keyboard player and backup singer."Peg" is one where Michael sings background.

FM was recorded for the movie of the same name. Around the same time as the sessions for the Aja album so many of the same players were used. As mentioned in other comments, Pete Christlieb did the sax solo for FM, he also does the sax solo for Aja's Deacon Blues. Jeff Porcaro on drums and The Eagles Time B. Schmidt, Glen Frey and Don Henley contributed backup vocals. Just listen to everything from Steely Dan and do the albums in the order they were released so you can appreciate the evolution.

You NEED Steely Dan in your life! FM was a song on the FM movie soundtrack. Walter Becker is on guitar and Donald Fagan on keyboard. Aja is their best album IMO. Have you heard Black Cow? So glad to hear younger generations are listening to some of the best music ever created! They are unique and brilliant! Katy Lied and Pretzel Logic are some of my other favorite albums. Keep jamming!!

Hi, Guy! Let me, as a Baby Boomer, tell you why our music had so much depth and precision to it! Back in our day, as a child, you had to learn to play an instrument, or wish you did! You had to master one instrument, before you could move on to the next! Back in the day, both parents were in the home, both pushed you, buying instruments, buying records, and paying for lessons! most homes had basements, which the fathers mostly would encourage their sons to form bands in, using the basements for supervised practice sessions but mostly the fathers part was listening out for which neighbor would be the one to complain about the noise! No calls meant "go ahead, tear the place up"! The only difference between our recording artists and us, is that they made this their life's assignment, while the rest of us chose other paths!....how'd I do?

My mom was fixing dinner out in the kitchen & burst rt out laughing the 1st time I played "The Fez" for her.

can't go wrong with the Dan! Those cats were so sophisticated, blending it all together.

I first heard this song when I was 10 years old, after that I was a Steely Dan fan. It was the first music that I liked that didn't come from my parents. I am now 57 years old and still a big time Steely Dan fan. My number one all time favorite album is Aja.

When I hear that sax solo, even today, I'm instantly back in 1978 cruising through Colorado in my 74 Plymouth....

You can't go wrong with Steely Dan. You need to hear their first hit "Do It Again".

6 minutes and two seconds of musical greatness! I listen to Do It Again while on the treadmill. Half way through the song, I'm dancing on that thing! The lyrics are a bit dark though. Just sayin.

Steely Dan/Dirty Work. This is very early Steely Dan, when they were still teething!

Donald Fagen (lead singer) performed the keyboards/piano. Walter Becker (his partner, RIP) did the electronic guitar and bass. The backing singers for FM were Tim Schimitt and (surprise) Glenn Fry and Don Henley from the Eagles LOL. I thought both bands were rivals, but it seems like they came together for this song. I love both groups.

Walking into a warn dark cozy lounge and these guys are cranking this out upon the stage"live;-)

The guitar solo at the end was the late Walter Becker., the other half of Steely Dan along with Donald Fagen. Becker originally started out on bass guitar when the group first started. He began to take a more active guitar role as the group progressed, along with Denny Dias, and the crack session musicians they would employ.

Always said I could picture myself seated in a swank bar, with the lights turned low and a lit candle lit in the center of the table and this magnificent band playing this tune on stage. I just subscribed because of how you totally GOT what was going on in this arrangement! You’ve got good ears, you’re intelligent, and you know how to listen. 🤙🏽 And it blew my mind when you compared Steely Dan’s progressions to Stevie Wonder! I always say that the three great masters of 20th century chord progressions are Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, and the grandmaster of bossa nova, Antônio Carlos Jobim. Check out the Dan’s “Kid Charlemagne” for Larry Carlton’s guitar solo that many feel is the best in rock history.

The movie -FM came out in 78 and was about an FM station and the drama surrounding that part of the music biz at the time. Fantastic cast and the soundtrack was an award winner. This song was the theme. So great.

If you haven’t already done a reaction to Black Cow, you should. The horn arrangements throughout and on the outtro are as good as it gets. The “Dan” is straight up excellence.

Green Earrings, The Fez, Sign in Stranger.....there SIMPLY IS NO JUNK SONG...its all high studio skills, elite "instrumementality", and that lasting 70's irreverence we all recognize and prize!!

The backup vocals are three of The Eagles. Strings and arrangements by Oscar winning songwriter Johnny Mandel (The Shadow of Your Smile, 1965). Pete Christlieb on sax. At the time in the Tonight Show band. Fagen and Becker saw him perform a solo on TV and contacted him.

I get such a kick watching people discover the music of my younger days.

keep in mind that Fagan was a perfectionist, and he had his pick of the world's best session musicians in LA- the names are staggering that he's used for his work. I love your reference to Stevie Wonder during your reaction- he was an outright genius in the studio- knew just what he needed,....all the time.

Do their "Don't Take Me Alive." You'll love it. Every Steely Dan song is great!!

Kid Charlemagne, Green Earrings, Time Out of Mind, Home At Last, My Rival, Black Cow!!, West of Hollywood, Janie Runaway, Lunch with Gina, Everything Must Go, Don't Take Me Alive, Peg, Josie, Caves of Altamira, Dr. Wu, Bad Sneakers, Night By Night, Almost Gothic, Pretzel Logic, Razor Boy, Rikki Don't Lose that Number and on and on and on. The Steely Dan deep cuts are as deep as Stevie Wonder! Also, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have 6 solo albums. All great in their own way. The Nightfly, Sunken Condos, and Circus Money are IMO the best solo albums.

Donald Fagan is the lead singer on almost all their songs. He did a few albums on his own, and a couple songs you can check out are Snowbound and Mona. They are lit!✌

The song was a Top 20 Hit. It's the theme of a movie called FM. It bombed big time. It came out in the spring of 1978. In the fall of '78 the TV sitcom "WKRP in Cincinnati" began. The TV show's theme was lifted from the movie.

String Arrangements on this track are crazy.

Enjoyed it. Short story, after 2 albums Fagen and Becker went duo and cast top session artists for each song, ie they used 30 other artists to complete their Grammy sweeping Two Againt Nature, 9 amazing tracks. And be advised, the best version of any SD song you'll hear is the original album track. If you dig live jazz with some funk, Marcus King Band, "Virginia" at World Cafe is off the charts.

This is my all-time favorite reaction on You Tube. That's how I felt when I heard it... and it was brand new.

When I was 12, I got a Candle turntable with the built-in radio and 8-track player. The 8-tracks they bought me were Led Zeppelin 1, Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees and the OST to the movie, FM. It was like the cinematic pilot for WKRP in Cincinnati. That album steered me to a lot of great artists - most notably, Steely Dan. Buying records at the record/stereo shop in my small town in Canada, I noticed that Steely Dan albums were the ones most used to determine the quality of speakers and needles in the demo area of the store. Blaine the shop owner explained that it was because of the albums' superior recording and production values. That was the case all over North America at the time, apparently.

Michael McDonald was a backup singer and a member of the Steely Dan touring group. You can hear him out front on a few Dan classics with the New York Rock and Soul Revue.

"Green Earrings" off their Royal Scam album. My favorite deep dive track but IMHO the best blend of rock and Jazz ever in one song. It will blow you away. I personally promise.

They have an amazing catalog! Idk where to even begin. If you go from the start I would say “Do it again” as it was their first single and you can see how far the went. It’s all incredible in its own way.

The best thing about all of Steely's music is that it's real people playing real instruments with not a lot of weir processing going on. . . and it kicks ass. There's nothing in today's culture that can stand up to it . . . it's as close to perfect music production as you can get . . . and it's got lyrics, gooves and melodies that just stop your fucking heart

I was a little puzzled that when that ripping sax solo started, he didn't mention the sax, but he talked about the keys.

You’ll probably detect something familiar in Black Cow, but anything from Aja or Gaucho will feel like FM. The Royal Scam is great. In the earlier albums, you’ll hear the jazzy influences gaining momentum. The truth is you will not go wrong with anything - early 70s to 2000s - from Steely Dan

There are so many GREAT songs to choose from in their catalog - can't disagree with anyone's recommendations. My favorite? I've got at least a dozen, but since no one else has mentioned it, I'll go with Dr. Wu from the Katy Lied album - a moody melancholy tune that features my favorite sax solo ever (the great Phil Woods).

This song is simple one to understand as far as Steely Dan lyrics go. FM Radio began to become more popular starting around the beginning of "70s" and passed AM with amount of listeners turning in. Less commercials, more stations playing genres of music that wasn't played on AM and clearer reception. Like the lyrics mentioned, Reggae and Funk, also much more Rock and Motown. It became a way to hear new music. We're spoiled now. Chick's aren't staying indoors and listening to radio, smoke some weed have some drinks and someone yells "I love this song" while they're hanging out these days. There's way more options now a days. But then it was a time when something was new and improved. It made the mood right. "The Tech Age" wasn't here yet. But "Soul Train" was......

There is a LONGER version that includes mixes from several different musicians and sessions. And regarding any other Steely Dan that I know of; ALL of it! Any of it. But you should listen to entire albums in chronological order which starts with "Can't Buy A Thrill". I know you'll love them all. Enjoy.

I'd say for their classiest tune, try Deacon Blues. Not just yacht rock, as was mentioned, but more like Lear- jet jazz. Smokin' hot! Make sure and get out the fine champagne, smoking jacket and hot babes! For an adrenaline rush, try Bodhisattva. Green Earrings and Aja are awesome, too.

Excellent reaction Jay. Other commenters have said it all. What is ideal here is, since you're brand new to Steely Dan, considering starting with their first album, and do a track-by-track reaction. You literally cannot find a song unworthy of reaction. Read up on some of the amazing musicians they have had cut tracks for them. Sometimes, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker would bring in several top tier musicians for just one solo, and then take their pick of the multitude of amazing takes.
