Steeleye Span - Padstow (Live)

Steeleye Span performing 'Padstow'. The Cornish village of Padstow celebrates May Day each year with an extraordinary festival. There are two hobby horses (the red or old 'oss and the blue or temperance 'oss) that dance through the streets led by a “teaser” surrounded by the whole village and onlookers. All day they dance with short breaks for refreshments with mesmeric drums beating the winter out and the spring in.
Taken from the live DVD 'Steeleye Span: The 35th Anniversary World Tour 2004'. Available to buy from the Park shop here: parkrecords.com/product/prkdvd...

I've always wondered why in every version Aunt Ursula's surname is sung as "Burden" and yet in the printed lyrics it's spelled "Birdhood". Suppose I shouldn't worry about such trivia :-) I always love that unaccompanied section in the middle.

You only have to compare the KZread videos of modern day goings-on in Padstow with those for previous decades, which videos go back to the 30's, to see that it is those who speak of "our May Song" that have ruined it.

By modern day goings on you mean...? I've been part of May Day in Padstow for my entire life. I can tell you first hand, it's not the playing of the May Song by others that's the issue, it's the lack of respect for something that is extremely personal, and the last bastion of individual character that our town has. With the onslaught of celebrity chefs, second-home owners from England, and the decimation of small town life in lieu of art galleries, high priced clothing shops, and expensive eateries, is it any wonder that the Cornish become fiercely protective of anything individual or regional? All Steeleye Span did was package it for profit, and not a penny went to either 'Oss party, or the charities that they collected for at the time.

Why did you watch even the first ten seconds? It seems your mind was made up long before then. If djtwo2 doesn't understand Padstow then for your part I don't think you have the slightest idea what makes Maddy Prior/Steeleye Span tick either.

Actually, I quite like Steeleye Span, and there's no denying their impact on English folk music over the last 40 odd years, Maddie Prior is wonderful singer. The problem is that Cornish culture is not English, and there was a serious lack of deference on this occasion. What might seem like a great tribute by some, was perceived as disrespectful back home. But then again, I suppose we shouldn't expect any different when our own local papers can't seem to grasp that May Day (in Padstow) isn't a festival or parade for all and sundry to come down and join in, but Padstow's day. Yeghes da!

Sounds like petulant, nationalistic-type nonsense scaled down to a county. If you want to be independent then try for it! Don't rebuke bands who, out of respect, make the song to their style thus making it more widely known, if inaccurate to your ears.
