Steel Tongue Drums on Amazon: Review

Музыка

Hey everyone! Today I'm reviewing the steel tongue drums that are easy to find all over Amazon and other internet sellers. They are sold by many different companies, but seem to all be made by the same manufacturer, or at least ones with identical specifications! Buy the 12 inch diatonic (big green drum) on Amazon: amzn.to/3fWfOR2
Buy the 6 inch diatonic on Amazon (small blue drum): amzn.to/39APmuY
The 6 inch pentatonic on Amazon (small silver drum): amzn.to/36wG9Cb
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. That means that if you buy something from the above Amazon link, I might get a small share of the sale :) Thank you!
If you want an in-depth course on how to play your tongue drum, check out Master the Handpan here: masterthehandpan.teachable.co... You can use the code MUSICALMOLLY to get $30 off! The beginner's tongue drum course (RAV Essentials) has over 7 hours of lessons plus an active Facebook group to ask questions of the wonderful instructor, David, and your fellow students. This is an affiliate link, so if you decide to purchase a course it supports this channel as well!

    My mother purchased the large green one for my eight-year-old as a SUPRISE gift. She LOVES it and has started learning songs. She woke up this morning at 6:30am to practice. I'm pleased that it's so pleasant to listen to even with her amateur efforts. I played the violin and the trumpet as a child and the first steps learning them weren't nearly as enjoyable for listeners.

    Hi Molly, thanks for the wonderful review. I happened to have already bought mine, a 12" Amahi. I just wanted to mention that my drum is tunable, not by filing the tongues, but by magnets on the underside of the tongues that add mass to the tongue. There's a removable disc on the bottom that gives access to the underside. Move the magnets towards the tip and the pitch lowers. Move the magnets away from the tip, it goes sharper. I was able to get this drum (diatonic octave in D with additional low 7, 6, and 5) to correct pitch within a few cents. And let me just add my voice to those who appreciate your kind manner. I bet you're great with the kids! All the best!

    I got a 13 note one for Christmas. Here's a tip: take a flashlight and stick it inside the drum. Check for any places where the tongues were not "clean cut". You will need a Very thin metal file to file away any spurs or places where it wasn't cut all the way. That may help clean up any sound issues. One of the song books I ordered says to put a magnet on the back side of the tongues to get them in tune.

    I've seen a lot of ads for these lately and off-and-on for years. I ALMOST considered buying one, but being unable to pick your key nor having the full chromatic scale makes it a no-go for me at this time. Some music requires accidentals, and of course, sometimes you just need to change the key. I think you are 100% correct in your usage though, especially for the smaller, cheap ones. It's a good way to introduce young kids and new musicians into playing melodic mallet instruments, and could help transition them into the bells, xylophone, marimba, or even steel pan as they get more comfortable. Thanks for the review! It did answer some of my questions about these instruments.

    @@MusicalMollyKhan Btw 🤔... My friend has a very expansive hand pan/steel drum; upwards of $3,000. It’s AMAZING. I feel in love at first hearing it. I don’t have the money for one (yet). For now, I’ve been considering one of these little guys like the one you reviewed here. I’m a musician (drummer, classical guitar, bass, etc...) and I’ve studied music and production engineering at MTSU university. Despite all that, I’m really struggling to find what I need/want. 😞 My friend’s instrument is tuned to F# minor. I want to resonate in the same key as him if I accompany him. Do you you have any suggestions?😬🙏🏻

    Musical Molly Khan whilst I might have your attention, may I pick your brain? My daughter is 11 and autistic. Im looking for a tongue drum for her. I think something easy to play would be best. I’m willing to spend a little bit for something “good”. I think the less she has to fight with it to make it sing would help encourage her. I really think this is going to be the instrument for her. With the given sound (meditative), yet percussion (reactive feedback) in nature. That and I think the rest of us wouldn’t mind this instrument being played poorly as we get started. I’m not musically inclined in anyway. To be honest, its the nomenclature; the physics I more then understand. I intended in using the vocabulary in this video as the base of my research on what to purchase. (Super informative video, has everything I need _even if some of it is over my head_ ). My question to you is, what am I looking for if my daughter wanted to play _most_ music? I’m thinking along the lines of an abridged piano. (if a thing even exists). Would I need multiple drums? If so how many would be Adequate? If I were to start with 1 or 2 what would I want? (This is where the esoteric nature of the vocabulary gets me. Please translate for me) What frequency/wavelength range is each drum capable of and what area of the spectrum would be good to start with? My brain tells me middle ‘c’, but i really don’t know means. Thank you again. 🙇

  • @farshimelt

    @farshimelt

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@chetopuffs You may be overthinking this. Get a drum that fits your budget. Your daughter won't care about the frequency range or the key. Start with one and see if she enjoys it, let her develop on the instrument and if she feels limited get a larger one that fits musically with the one she has. Par Ex.: If you have a drum in the key of C, buy the second one in a complimentary key. Autism is not limiting musically. I have a friend who is autistic and he makes native American flutes and plays them very well.

    There is a process (and I'm not entirely sure how it works, just a general idea) where you can slip a file in the crack of the tongue and file the crack further. This makes the tongue longer and, I believe, lowers its pitch. Definitely look for more info on this before trying it though, because I am not sure!

    Hmm, finding sheet music for pentatonic instruments can be quite tricky - they're usually more improvisational! I did find this ( www.amazon.com/Music-Children-Pentatonic-Margaret-Murray/dp/379579501X/ref=sr_1_14?dchild=1&keywords=pentatonic+music&qid=1595424560&sr=8-14 ) though I'm not sure that would fit the range of the tongue drum.

Is it also the case of the big green one? Or is that one a bit closer to be in perfect tuned? It's to be used in music production so it needs to be in tuned with other instruments, thanks!!

    My big green one is about 5-10 cents sharp on most notes. This can be easily remedied with some neodymium magnets, as the big green one is magnetic and therefore tunable. It is definitely harder if your drum arrives a bit flat, though :(

    Thank you so much for all your helpful advice in playing and tuning the steel drum. I actually came across your channel through Music Makers and your harp stick & knee bone review. Was very excited to see you offered steel drum information. I have a 11 tongue drum that came with unattached stick on numbers but no instructions as to placement. It is out of tune with couple of the tongues resonating the same note. Appreciated your magnet tuning video. My question concerns the order of note placement. I was trying to copy your placement on your 18 inch drum, but you have more tongues than my drum. Hard to tell how the numbers correspond with the notes or their placement. Hi Molly! Having never played these instruments, and me, being a drummer/percussionist, the first thing that comes to my mind regarding that "sweet spot" is having many different mallets on hand....its kind of like your color packet. A slightly harder mallet, though hard on the ears, would allow for a more central tone and provide less a chance of missing the correct beating spot. You could try leaving those spots open for your more advanced student. students with the larger sizes should try a tightly yarn wound marimba or vibraphone mallet for a full fundamental tone. If they miss the sweet spot then the sound provided will be very muffled and could really teach them to use their ears and make small adjustments until they hit the sweet spot with more ease as they improve over time. As you probably know, from teaching orff that this is exactly why marimbaists and vibrophonists have tons of mallets in their bags: because we also have sweet spots on our instruments. Use harder mallets for upper register and softer for the mid to low register. You seem very confident in your video so I don't mean to insult your intelligence if you already know all of this but I just wanted to shoot my 2 cents your way hoping it could spark some ideas for you. The drums look and sound awesome and can't wait to get a set for myself....thanks for sharing this awesome percussion instrument with us!

  • @MusicalMollyKhan

    @MusicalMollyKhan

    This is so interesting, thank you! It's been a long time since I trained in Orff and I don't have access to the high quality Orff instruments, so I do a lot of improvising with less expensive pentatonic instruments for my preschoolers. I will definitely have to experiment with more mallets!

  • @EmoryBlake4Music

    @EmoryBlake4Music

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@MusicalMollyKhan let me know if you need any suggestions for new mallets. Even though I can only judge by the video whether or not certain mallets will work, I can hopefully point you in the right direction. I taught orff classes about 12 years ago, and if I remember correctly we only used hard mallets so that some kind of sound was produced no matter where they struck the bar. So even if one students misses the sweet spot, it can be covered up by those who dont. I'm so glad my advice was helpful for you! Just wondering how you originally discovered these instruments? Because it's very similar to a log drum which percussionists use on a pretty regular basis.
