    That's what my roofer did. I don't know what product he used, but it only lasted about five years, and water started pouring down my vent pipe. I thought I had a broken pipe while working in the crawlspace, I saw water pouring down the pipe from the roof to the crawlspace.

    I can understand some of the comments below. It does look pretty nasty, but those rubber boots don't really look any better, and they are installed with the same method as the metal flashing in the video. I would NOT seal a pipe directly to the roof with no flashing though. There is a way to do it and have it look nice which involves slicing the metal (similar to how the guy cuts the rib to allow the flashing to slide under it) to the exact width of the flashing and then sliding the flashing into the slice, and sealing the sides and sliced area. Of course, this only works if you've got a hole. If there's a pipe penetrating the surface, it requires either cutting the pipe off and then extending it again after flashing is installed, or performing the 'slice' higher up above the flashing and sliding in another flashing to complete the system.

    Good point cuz the ruber boots with the lead base flange is junk!!! I flash my pipes with a shingle vent flange which I set in Karnak then I cut a oval the same diameter as the shingle vent flange so that the corrugated panel lays flat and then I Geocel around the rubber boot but I use a small amount cuz nothing beats Geocel cuz I did a sky light repair in which I used Geocel which is the highest quality silicone and ten years later it's just as plyable as the day I sealed the sky light plus I would never put that many fasteners around any type of vent that's asking for trouble

    I do my soil pipes nearly the same way except I reinforce my caulking with fiberglass mesh ,I tool in my caulk with a trowel and putty knife, then I rub in a layer of woven fiberglass " Rag " ,I cut the rag where all wrinkles lay flat on the roof deck and rub the fabric in where it's completely embedded in the polyurethane caulking ,I then put a layer of polyurethane caulking 4 inches up the soil pipe and wrap 4 inches of the fabric around the pipe ,then the remaining 2 inches are rubbed into the fresh polyurethane & fabric on the roof panel ,once that sets up for 24 hours I apply a top coat of Quad brand polyurethane caulking over all my work ,the polyurethane hardens like a rock and adheres like roofing tar where it sticks to whatever it touches ,you should really try to reinforce the caulking/roof/plumbing connection points instead of just applying sealant, the reinforcement fabric guarantees your pipe won't leak for the life of the roof ,I buy the yellow " Henerys " brand from home depot and spray paint the yellow fabric red ,bronze ,green etc 24 hours before using ,when I apply the clear polyurethane caulking over the color matched fabric it makes for a visually beautiful connection that lasts .

    There’s a couple ways of doing it not a right or wrong way. Option one put it in precisely the same way I put in the little black dryer vent. This is how most people do it. Option two, Cut a hole in your steel that exactly will fit over the pipe, then seal it exactly the way I did it around the sewer vent pipe. Make sure to use good sealant, through the roof is what I found to be the best. Hope it helped happy Roofing. Luke

    jesse sherman No it won't work on a hot pipe ,even if you allow it to cure it will melt & run off , I've had 2 cast iron pipes that looked like regular soil pipes but we're venting over 300 degree steam on 1 and 500 plus on the 2nd pipe ,there is only 1 way I've found to do a " Hot " pipe right and that's with a 3 part flange system ,you build a Base flange that has 4" on the roof with a circular cone that's 8" off the decking ,the top of the flange should be 2 to 3 inches larger than the hot pipe which allows heat to escape from the flange and not direct heat under the roof panel ,you want to cut the top of your base flange where it's level vs allowing it to follow the angle of the roof deck , to close off the space between your base flange and hot pipe you use a " Collar jack " that's sloped so when you slide the tight fitting collar jack over the hot pipe it allows water to flow away from your base flange opening ,. For instance let's say you have a common 4 inch cast iron hot pipe ,you'd want your base flange to be 6 inches in diameter where the flange comes up off the roof ,the flange going up the pipe should be 8 inches and cut to have its top edge level once installed over the pipe ,the 2-3 inches of free air space between your flange and hot pipe is critical because it will exhaust radiant heat from the pipe ,now for your Collar jack start with a round piece of sheet metal ,if your flange is 6 inches make the round sheet metal 12 inches so when you make the Collar jack it extends past the flange top ,find the exact center of your circular metal and trace out one 2 inch circle and a second 4 inch circle so you end up with a 2" trace dead center & a 2nd trace that's 2 inches larger ,now is when you make the Collar Jack ,cut out the 2 inch circle trace dead center ,after you have a 2 inch hole dead center take your snips and cut from the hole just up to your 4 inch circle line ,you make a cut from the center circle to your 4 inch line every 1/2 inch ,once you've made those cuts take pliers and bend those ears you just made in the center up at a 90 degree angle & cut the points off ,this will leave you with 1.25 inch " Fingers " that will be wrapped tightly around the pipe ,next make a cut starting from the center all the way out to the edge of your 12 inch circle to split your circle piece of metal ,take pliers and bend up each side of the cut 1 inch ,once you slip that over the pipe the fingers you made must be pointed up ,you squeeze your newly made collar jack together around the pipe and run 2 self tapping sheet metal screws thru the 1 inch bends sticking up ,once you have screwed the collar together it will create a 45 degree angle on your collar that prevents standing water , slide the collar jack 1/2 inch up off of the flange below to allow hot air to escape and use a radiator hose clamp to fix the collar to the hot pipe ,the hose clamp will prevent the collar from sliding down and give you more surface to apply waterproofing . To waterproof the top of the collar jack you have 2 choices ,you can use high temp 500 degree RTV silicone caulking ,or you can use high temp Furnace and Chimney cement and brush it on the pipe clamp to pipe connection point and you'll be 100% water tight while still allowing radiant pipe heat to be directed away from the roofing ,if you need I can source up some links to shop drawings if I didn't do well enough explaining .

    "Weld"? That sealant is not molecularly bonding with the metal, that's no weld. Also heat, cold, exposure to sun and rain, hard to believe that fully exposed sealant will remain water tight. Though I agree Through the Roof is a great product.

    If you say so. I'll admit I'm biased by my experiences with old silicone caulks - stuff is way over rated and misused even more often. I hope you're right because I took your advice today (had to cut two 4" fart fan vents through propanel) and I built up the leading edge more than I normally would have. Yes I was using Through the Roof, which I've used before, without thinking much about it's differences to silicone. Guess I'll have to snoop around, learn a bit about the chemistry.* It didn't spread a nifty as you made it look, but that's what a few years of experience will do for a guy. ;- ) *Don't suppose you can recommend a link to such info?

That are done this way. No problems. Do it right and don’t rely on rubber, it cracks and it will leak and then you are putting a new rubber on the vent. Why not just use silicone roof jacks made for metal roofing?

  • @BacktotheBasics101

    @BacktotheBasics101

    4 жыл бұрын

    I think I went over that in the beginning part of the video. It is been my experience that the silicone roof jack goes bad, then you have to replace them. At the end of the day the sealant on the roof jack is what keeps the roof jack from leaking. So I just bypassed the $20 some dollar roof jack and used the sealant. It also makes the roof look a little cleaner, because the roof jacks are usually not the same color as the roof itself. If a person does Say 30 to 40 jobs a year, and each job has 3 to 4 roof jacks on it, 35x4=140x$24=$3360.00 dollars saved. If you cut the hole wrong by all means use a roof jack. Just my way of thinking I guess. Stay dry👍🏼 Luke

    If you cut and expose metal you will have rust quickly. With this method there is no exposed metal. If water pools there, it would Of the operate very quickly. Water typically does not sit on a steel roof very long. Thanks for your concerns. Luke

    If done correctly you do not need that much sealant that is overkill the panel should be spliced in the vent installed underneath the panel on the top end laying the vent directly on top is incorrect that's why it's taking so much sealant for people watching please do not install your vents like this there is a much cleaner and nicer way to do it and they will not leak

    Anyone watching this, this is not the right way to install penetration or vent flashings in a metal roof. Keep in mind caulking is never suppose to be the primary method to seal ANY roof flashings.... Another thing to add unless it is a barn or shed a standing seam or snap lock roofing system should be used.

    I’m not going to question you’re right to question but I will question your logic, the boot you put on over your sewer cap, is solely keeping water out by the sealant around the boot. If you would’ve watch the video you would’ve known that I do not use silicone or caulking, both are inferior products and should not be used. I will not bother saying what I am using until you rewatch the video. We’ve got hundreds of happy customers and dozens and dozens more waiting for us to get on the roofs. To each their own and we don’t have any leaks and this is lasted for over 20 years and some cases 30. If you have more experience or a better way of Roofing I am all yours and I am anxious to see your video. What I won’t do on your video is what you did, I may ask questions but I won’t tell people to not watch or listen to somebody’s instruction on how they’ve been highly successful. • @BacktotheBasics101

    @BacktotheBasics101

    7 ай бұрын

    I appreciate your opinion on the subject, but I do disagree. The boot is still dependent on the sealant application, and when that boot goes bad, and it will, it is rubber you’re going to have water run right into your house through the hole in that roof, so no matter, which way you scan that cat the water stays out of the roof due to The sealant not the rubber vent gadget gizmo. We’ve been doing this a long time like this and had absolutely zero problems with this method previously, we’ve had problems with the rubber vents. just my thoughts.

    Friend, there’s a lot of different ways to skin a cat, but your boot, which I put on hundreds of them still depend on sealant. And when your boot goes bad and it will believe me, I replaced dozens upon dozens of them. Water will sleep right in because there is no protection. Never use caulking or silicone to seal a steel roof. We have roofs that have not leak for over 20 years using this method. If you think about it, you will understand our logic. At the end of the day you do what’s best for you, but when those rubber seal gaskets go out, you’ll think to yourself I wonder what would happen if I just didn’t use the rubber seal gasket. I have showed dozens of pro roofing companies, including ours this method, and every one of them started doing it this way because it makes more sense. At the end of the day you do what you want to do. We have hundreds of happy customers and this is the method we use and we have a waiting list for people to get on their roof.
