Steel Beam Design Calculations for Beginners - Structural Engineer

Example of a simple steel beam design done as a practicing engineering.
The reason I’m not checking the shear resistance is because I know that bending and deflection are the critical checks for this UDL condition. It is still worth checking if you are unsure or inexperienced.
It is really important to get good at hand writing calculations. If you are to sit your chartership exam with the iStructe, you must be proficient at writing calculations. So don’t become over reliant on computer software!
I am using Goodnotes 5 on my IPad Pro to write my calculations. I do this not only in this video but in real life for my work as I am trying to cut down on paper waste and embrace new technology.
I am a qualified Chartered Structural Engineer working in the UK. If you have questions please drop me a comment.

I'm looking to replace hardwood bed frame nonsense roof beams in my garage, and doing some back-of-the-envelope structural analysis with your guide was really helpful. It's remarkable how strong 80x80mm hardwood beams are, I seem to need 120mm section i beam to match the strength!

Hi Dazz, this is really helpful, thanks. But I was wondering if it's normal not to consider the beam's self weight in the calculation? Or you'd reiterate again with the beam's weight?

Hi! I was referring Design of Structural Elements by Chanakya arya to brush up my basics. In this book, steel design section, they did designing some different way. They did not use the blue book like you did. Can you please tell me where should I start to learn from the basics. Thanks in advance.

Do you have an example of two beams supporting an external wall? One resisting the brickwork, one resisting the blockwork and roof weight. Should the beams be tied together, if so, how?

This is so helpful! Thank you. Please do more examples of column and beam design for steel and concrete. Do you have any textbook recommendations where they give a lot of examples? It's so time consuming trying to find examples that use EC2 and EC3 :( our uni doesnt provide as with much examples or solutions so half the time I dont know if Im doing my beam and column designs correctly or not.

Can you design a cantilever beam connection with one support example with a pinned or and a moment connection? Also a wood column subject to overturning from wind. There is much confusion on holding column down on open porches. Thx

Hi Daz, I think with the moment of inertia required, the deflection required should be 20mm not 200mm. Or am I wrong in this. Thank you for the great video. Keep it up as always.

It would be great to see how you would design this same beam if the masonry above was existing. Would you increase the size of the section to minimize cracking in the existing masonry or would you pack out the beam? If so, how do you calculate the size of your beam packers and at what spacing do the spacers decrease in size as they approach the support ends? This is something I’ve always struggled with, thanks.

Hi Dazz, Why is it that you and others use (wL^2)/8 as the formula for moments in a simply supported beam with a UDL but the red book (page 70) and other sources suggest using (WL)/8. Are these the same formulas? if so what how does (w) relate to (W)? And which one should I be using? Hope my query makes sense, cheers.

  • @EverydayDazz

So small w is kN/m and W is total load in kN. So to get W you do w multiplied by L.

It’s the formula for deflection rearranged to solve for the “I” given the deflection limit. The deflection of a beam under uniform load is: d = (5 * w * L^4) / (384 * E * I) Where: d = deflection (m) w = uniform load (kN/m) L = length of span (m) E = Young’s modulus (aka modulus of elasticity) (Pa) I = second moment of area (aka moment of inertia) (m^4) Some use units of mm, MPa, etc., but I always use base units of m, N, Pa

Hi, if length of steel beam is 5000 mm including 200 mm bearing in each side. This means length of clear span is 4600 mm.which length will use in design. Clear span length or full length of the beam? Please advice. Thanks.

Attribute the load correctly to the edge beam, it depends on the dimensions of the slab but typically you can attribute a quarter of the area to the edge beam.
