This scene is SO nuanced. If you look at Stede’s reaction to Ed’s proposal, he looks happy, but still extremely apprehensive about the plan; Ed makes him happy, and that’s what counts, right? But when Admiral Badminton kidnaps and accuses Stede of ruining everything, especially Ed, the greatest pirate alive, that apprehension is given a voice. He ruined Ed’s life and will ruin it further if he stays with him, so he runs. This scene was MASTERFULLY played by Rhys and Taika, who’ve added so many layers to their performance. Just incredible work.

@@erminiaseverino7974 no, they don't die on the show. it's only on the 1st season and waiting confirmation for season 2. also yeah, both stede bonnet and blackbeard were real pirates, which are the ones in the show. but seeing that the show has taken various liberties when it comes to historical accuracy who knows how it's gonna end.

This scene is both so sweet and so incredibly heartbreaking. You can see Stede's doubt and hesitation here. Maybe if Chauncey hadn't nabbed him, he would have been at the dock, but I think he always would have had to eventually face his guilt over his family and his fear that he's "ruining" Edward too somehow. And god, Ed. The pauses as he makes his confession, the way he can't look at Stede until he's said it, the way his mouth barely moves when he says "you." It just feels so real to that terrifying moment of confessing to someone and hoping they reciprocate. And he just looks so hopeful and joyful, more youthful and happy than we've really ever seen him (though I'm sure the lack of beard helps there) but he's so happy to finally be able to shed the Blackbeard armor and just be Ed, and be with Stede, he's totally blind to Stede's hesitance, and seeing how happy he is just hurts knowing that he's going to get his heart broken.

best kiss in tv history?? at least the best one in a very long time,, the build up, the apprehension, the awkwardness, the confusion, but the pure and utter joy with both of them… plus this coupled with stede’s later “i hope you find that some day/i think i have” scene with mary is just…. GOD this is my favorite show ever, thank you thank you thank you to everyone involved from the creator to the writers to rhys and taika its all so wonderful i genuinely never could have wished for something better and i am so happy :””)

Ok but Stede's flashback here before he chooses to go with Ed seems so INCREDIBLY important. She's talking about how they would never have chosen eachother, and here Stede is choosing Ed. She says that they only have one life, and here he's choosing a different one, to restart it with Ed. Yes, he has reservations. Yes, he's not sure he wants to leave his own life behind. But he's choosing to start over with Ed anyway because that's who makes him happy.

I'm just going to rewatch this on repeat until Season 2 comes to save us all.

I think season two isn't likely to BEGIN with a happy reunion and all misunderstandings forgiven and straightened out. Probably that will be the tension of the entire season, and it will be AGONY. But I really do hope that in the end they will give us the resolution we hope for, history be damned.

I’ve never fallen in love with a show after one season. Genuinely obsessed.

I literally binged watched it in one sitting it was soo good 😭

This makes me 😢 cry. Ed is sooo hopeful, he wants him to know after all they have been through, but doesn’t find the words easily. The kiss is romantic and sweet. Rhys plays that confusion, but also in love thing perfectly. Taika is so compelling in this, I cry thinking about how this turns out 😭

Why am I just now realizing that Blackbeard is also having a mid-life crisis?? Like it's so obvious but I never saw it. Damn. Also, this is one of my favorite confession scenes in all of media. I have watched this video every day since I finished the show and I regret nothing.

The acting makes this scene 100000000% better, the casting for this show was so so perfect

I could watch this a thousand times. Fucking props to Taika and Rhys, the acting is phenomenal. I'm obsessed with the look on Stede's face after Ed says "you". The complexity! The nuance! The utter inability to properly process how happy that made him! Fucking phenomenal, thank you for uploading

Yeah, i feel like it was a good thing he went back to his old life to get closure bc then he can really start over without having to feel guilty about leaving his family, and i think if it didnt happen when it did it would have later, but he could have atleast told ed before leaving yk.

I love how, as of the season 2 announcement yesterday, titling this video as their "first kiss" is probably going to pay off. Actually, not even just "probably". They're most definitely going to kiss onscreen multiple times before their story ends (presumably by defying history with a happy ending where they spend the rest of their lives together), and, holy shit, I still can't believe this show exists

Everyone should be able to make entire TV shows revolve entirely around kissing your friends.

Fortunately, despite all their screwed-up baggage, they are very kind and generous to each other and will work it out over time. I mean, Stede forgave Ed for planning to murder him, for god's sake. But Ed may more need time to defrost since he's so sensitive and easily wounded.

My personal guess is that either it's because he wanted to feel Stede's face on his without whiskers in the way, or because he was literally trying to unstick himself from the definitional black beard that he was so trapped by, OR, Taika Watiti just got really sick of the limited facial expressions he could make while wearing spirit gum to adhere the face wig to his chin.
