Steampunk Archangel Wings

Steampunk Archangel Wings v1.0
I made this costume for my wife on a whim. This was a "quick and cheap" costume, completed in about a week. I got tired of all the pathetic little steampunk/goth wings that show up on the internet, that have a 2' wingspan, and wanted to make something that looked like it "could" fly.

I must double his request here I really want to cosplay a Steam-Punk angel for MomoCon (or next AWA if I can't have the costume done in time) and these wings look both amazing and (hopefully) cheap. Also, their span is great as I hat those tiny "Wings" everyone tries to use. If you could possibly make a tutorial and let us see how they are made (text and/or video, both are useful) I would be in your debt!

This set is closed by hand, because I was laid off when I made them, and didn't have money for fancy pneumatics. They could easily have the screen-door-closers swapped out, and replaced with some double-acting pneumatic cylinders, probably for about $150.

Amazing workmanship, you might try to use the openers from the automotive trunks, hoods, depending on how they are mounted they could be used to assist the closing action. But it could take some redesign work, but since you have your own home cnc set up and you obviously know how to do cad work that should not pose to much of a problem. I sure wish you lived close to me. We would be great buds...lol

I'm not really sure what your specific question is? How do they fold, as in how do the hinges work? How do the support veins in the fabric wing material collapse? What independently moves the wing tip section down, while the wing roots move up?

I'm trying to source the pneumatic door closers here in the UK. It looks like they're very much an American thing and I can only find a couple that aren't imports. However, they aren't 'heavy duty', which I imagine you'd need. In short, did you use heavy duty ones or regular? The ones I have available are limited to 100KG doors. Thanks in advance! :-)

+Caspian Lee The cylinders I used were $15-25 each, and available at any home supply store here in the USA. They are typically used for very light screen doors... my guess is that a screen door would weigh 20-30lb (10-15kg), so if you have one that could handle a 100kg (220lb) door, that is probably overkill. I'd really recommend you check into regular pneumatic cylinders (e.g. automationdirect.com ), because with just a little more money, you could make them open and close!

+Guido Kimble Marvellous info - thank you! Have done a bit of research into pneumatic cylinders, but getting the right kit together is going to be a nightmare - we don't have portable compressor & regulator devices on the market over here, so I'd have to buy all the valves and build it from scratch. -.- I may play around with that once the wings are built and I'm not building to a deadline - if I make any progress, I'll be sure to post it. Thanks again for your help! :-)

+Caspian Lee You probably do have the required parts around your country, you just have think outside the box. If you look up my "Ranger Target" system, it uses a 100PSI low pressure regulator from a paintball gun, along with off the shelf pneumatic cylinders. The whole world uses pneumatic cylinders for machine design, so you've got to have suppliers (try Bimba). Just email me if you need more info (my email is in the video).

I'm happy to answer any specific questions. I just don't have a tutorial, or plans, because the wings are already built, and I made it all on-the-fly. The biggest key is understanding how the gears work to keep the wings folding at the same time. As the wings unfold, the center bar and cables pull on the wing tips to open them.

+Artsy Alchemist The straps are from a US Army ALICE backpack. The shoulder and lumbar pads I made, by sewing a tube out of OD green cotton duck canvas and stuffing in polyethylene foam sheets. The straps connect through D-rings screwed to the top and bottom of the backplate, and the pads are just screwed through flaps of fabric.

+Sara M They are "screen door closers", from the hardware store, painted gold. They were the cheapest thing I could find to pull it off, because I was out of work at the time. You could also simply substitute "double acting pneumatic cylinders", and the associated plumbing, to make them able to open AND close. That would probably add $100-200, which is why I didn't do it at the time.
