Howdy! Now, I know you might have a few questions. Here I am to answer them: 1. Where's the full cartoon??? The colorization process took a bit longer than anticipated. We still have a few segments like you can see here that still need to be colored in. We've also been reached out by a few animation festivals that were interested in screening our project. So the cartoon in full will unfortunately not be released for another few months. 2. Where are his iconic red shorts??? Fun (legal) Fact: The red shorts Mickey variant is still technically under copyright protection, at least for another ten years or so. Those original teasers we uploaded were merely a test of the colorization process (as well as to catch people's attention). The blue shorts version is the official one we're releasing. Here's a thought. Could you potentially do green shorts? Mickey's first colored appearance actually had him wearing green shorts instead of his iconic red. The problem is that short might still be under copyright protection. Amazing job so far!

Everyone knows how ruthless they are when it comes to hunting people down for this stuff, even if their case would be harder to make thanks to the public domain, smaller entities like this channel can't fight them even if they wanted to

Honestly, this is by far one of the best things to come out of Steamboat Willie becoming public domain.

Wow, you've really breathed new life into this almost 96 year-old cartoon. All of the colors look accurate to 1930's Silly Symphonies-era Disney too! Awesome work!

It's actually more of a general Mickey Mouse Poster since the only colors on the official Gallopin' Gaucho poster are white and red but yes, there is a 1928 Poster with his iconic red shorts (with yellow gloves and brown shoes) and all the other posters (steamboat willie, plane crazy, pretty much everything from 1928-1931) has white gloves. So pretty nuch the only thing that might not be safe is yellow shoes

This looks absolutely incredible. This is the first time I see somebody actually trying to make a black and white cartoon into full color this perfectly. Disney should have done this like years ago but they couldn’t wanted to colorize the cartoon. I’m excited to see the full version of the iconic short in color. You earned yourself a subscriber.

II think that Steamboat Willie as the Mickey's debut is some kind sacred cow. In 80s-90s all old BW Mickey's cartoons were indeed colorized for TV syndication, but not Steamboat Willie was untouched. This is the same case of Snow White - for years wasn't in TV and Disney Company was reluctant to Get Home release.

Officially released to this episode, there was a poster released on the same day. The poster was colored and mickey had his red shorts. It should be public domain.

Usually, I'm not big on making black and white things in colour, but I like this. Blue shorts are a nice alternative to red shorts

I know exactly what you mean when you say you're not a fan of Black & White stuff being colorized - I mean, imagine "The Twilight Zone" colorized! You just can't DO that! It's not right! I like the shading of the original Steamboat Willie, but there's definitely a place for a colorized version, too.

This looks so so sick. I love the contrast of the harsh solid black and white tones with the vibrant colors now popping. Especially the background and little set dressing. Awesome awesome work.

Mickey’s shorts being blue is stupid, they had no reason to make the shorts blue but they did it anyway. It’s like they forgot Mickey’s shorts are red and picked a random color.

​@domartim actually in this case it's worse. Cause they changed the wrong thing. The shoes were made the modern color which makes the situation even worse. Disney can spot that and get them into troublr

It still doesn't look *right* to me in color, but considering some of the colorations I've seen - this is actually quite nice. Its not too distracting

This is phenomenal!!! I've seen the original many many times. To see it presented in a new way is quite surreal. I love the realistic clouds behind the whistles.

For the record, the color of a black-and-white character's shorts is way below the threshold of originality needed to qualify for copyright. So even if you were to go with the classic red, it'd be a reasonable assumption and not creative enough for Disney to claim that it's copyrightable. There's no copyright on the color red. The only grounds they'd have are for trademark, which is still in effect on the original forever anyway and only has limited, specific protection.

Fair enough. I was concerned on the yellow shoes, but if this is true then I guess they are fine. Good to know though, thanks for mentioning that I don't think they avoided the red shorts for copyright, as the title card clearly displays them in their full glory. I think they went for some artistic difference here. Would surprise me if copyright concern changed it, as again, the shoes were unchanged.

Reminds me a lot of Mickey Mania's efforts to add colours to Steamboat Willie as you progress the stage.

Mickey's red shorts are in the public domain too. There are promotional posters released by Disney from 1928 of Mickey that are in color with his red shorts.

@@chazzywaz The legal analysis I've read state that they do count since they were published by Disney in 1928. So combining Steamboat Willie with Mickey's red shorts from the public domain posters should be perfectly legal now.

Not really. They use the red shorts on the title card, and in both they use the modern yellow shoes, which is the problem. They were probably going with an artistic difference here, but they should go back and change those shoes on both too if they want to stand a chance against Disney. And besides, red shorts aren't protected anyways the posters have the red shorts, but the shoes aren't yellow, they are brown, which is the ral concern here

I like the way they were dressed in a blue outfit. It really suits the theme where they're inside the steamboat.
