    The crossing is perfectly safe if and only if the road users stop when the light sequence initiates and the train drivers stick to 5mph speed limit. Network Rail are replacing most (if not all) Automatic Open Crossings on the national network, however this one is on a Heritage Railway and therefore Network Rail have nothing to do with it, there is a plan for a closure later in the year to upgrade this crossing but what that will actually entail I'm not sure, whether it will go ahead I guess is also in doubt at moment with this pandemic in progress.

    @@xr6lad Obviously , but it's not just about cars is it , what about kids on bikes , old people etc.If people didn't take chances we wouldn't need 1000's of miles of galvanised fencing on the railways..Anyway I was merely saying that I didn't know that crossing like this still existed in this health and safety age

    When the amber 'stop' light light first showed, the car in front of the tractor had enough time to stop. (You are only allowed to proceed on amber if it would be unsafe to stop). The tractor had more than ample time to stop and, in fact, passed the lights when the red lights were flashing. The guy in the tractor must have some kind of death wish. Either that or he thinks his piddling little tractor would come off best in an argument with a damned great A4 steam loco.

    Occasionally. Generally by people with little or no life experience, or by people who don't see the truth. Try researching the number of times tractors have been hit by trains where it is the tractor drivers fault (100% of the time) then see the drivers surname. It doesn't take a genius (you're clearly not one of those) to work out the surname is an Eastern European one. Sorry if this doesn't fit your narrow thinking ability but you cannot hide the facts. @@neiloflongbeck5705

    @@neiloflongbeck5705 get called an idiot much? an eastern european would probably know what there version of a crossing means but we have a different system so chances are if they are eastern european they probably dont know that an amber light then red means stop your going to end up going to god in the next 5 seconds. it doesnt take much effort to think that perhaps he/she was being rude not racist.

    Funny how 2 drivers didn’t see the lights, hear the buzzers and whistle, or notice a 130 ton engine (that’s on fire) approaching? Just imagine if that Bugatti front end got bent! 😱

    Can accept not hearing the buzzers or whistle since deaf people are legally allowed to drive, likewise not seeing the engine because it's off to the side but yeah ignoring the lights which are there to warn you of this is inexcusable. I do wonder if people new to the area might be expecting a barrier to come down and by there not being a barrier, they incorrectly assume it is safe to continue and ignore the lights?

    Yeah they lights are late though. There was 4-5 seconds from them flashing red until the train was on the crossing

    People commenting that the barriers should come down earlier. There is only about 20 seconds before the barriers come down at 85mph AHB (Automatic Half Barrier), crossings. The lights will come on 10 seconds before that. (Ex Bournemouth & Salisbury driver. I have driven over many level crossings over the years and it tends to be pedestrians that misuse them the most).

    You can see the 5mph speed limit sign for the railway before the train comes. Based on the time the locomotive took to pass the signpost at the left of the video frame and the locomotive's length, it appears to be doing 10mph. So, yes, the road traffic should have had about twice as much warning.

    @@edwardmeakes1284 OK, that's important information. I don't think it's possible to accurately measure the speed of the train before the crossing from the video. However, I will say that you can see the locomotive's coupling rods glinting in the light and it doesn't look to me like the train accelerates significantly as it crosses the road. In particular, if it accelerates from 5mph before the crossing to 10mph as it passes the camera, the driving wheels should be spinning twice as fast as they were before the crossing. To me, they look as if they're rotating at about the same speed throughout.

    That 's the first level crossing under a bridge I've seen, maybe the only one in the country. I'm surprised that there was a couple of AC coaches on the train, it must have been stifling inside them.

    The cossing is under the A47 trunk road. There is another crossing just before this one out of view, both ungated.

    Tractor could of been another Titfield incident . Seems like the treadle which is set on the inside of the rail flange in advance so as to activate the sirens and lights by first axel of the train , should be placed way further in advance . Great capture .

    Actually the reason the lights seemed to start so late was due to the fact that the train was speeding as their is a speed limit of 5 MPH over both of the LCs and their is no way that that train was doing 5 Mph. I also think that this crossing should be upgraded to at least ABCL (Automatic Barrier Crossing Locally Monitored).

    Reedo Railways as a crossing keeper I always Made sure the crossing was always clear before I pulled off the protecting signals . This is a very dangerous crossing and I’m baffled as to why network rail have down graded the crossing with the amount of traffic .

    This isn't on the national network, this is part of The Mid Norfolk Heritage Railway. Also this is an Automatic crossing so doesn't have any protecting signals, only an indicator so that the train crew know that the crossing has initiated and the lights are flashing. There was a plan to add half barriers here but unfortunately they don't have sufficient funding.

    Reedo Railways doesn’t matter , it’s an operational railway that is running just as that . Like most things , it will take an incident to happen to implement a reaction and things put in place . If it carries the public and crosses a busy road 5mph or no 5 mph , at least have AHB’s or relevant safety measures in place . I’m all for heritage railways , but safety should always be number one .,Road users however should know better not to stop in the yellow box , maybe advance traffic lights need to be petitioned for to the local council . ?

    @@Richardsrailway The crossing was put in by British Rail and, therefore, has grandfather rights. It is also fully safe if road users drive according to the law (and train crews follow speed limits).

    Those crossing lights look similar to those in Eire , pity there are no Barrier Arms ( Gates ) as they say in America. Doesn't look like too much road courtesy, whats that the tractor driver says ! Thanks for the video 😄👌👍🍻

    Beautiful train. I think I have miniatures (00 guage railway) of these carriages. Why on earth aren't there any barriers to stop the cars I mean this is a death trap. Or perhaps route the cars around the train so they're not going across each other?

    Are the MNR ever going to upgrade this crossing? The road is far too busy to have just lights and sirens and overhaul the entire circuit which operates the crossing.

    @@stoatrepublic As another local, I agree. If road users are incapable of responding to lights and sirens they must find regular light controlled junctions and pedestrian crossings impossible. It is they who need to hand back their driving licenses and start again, not the railway. However, the MNR are upgrading this in the near future - so I assume that Cakeski will be making a suitably large donation?

    @@beeble2003 National standard is 28 seconds, I believe. Brandon is an exception - and one that lowers far too early, encouraging numpty pedestrians to jump the barrier.

    @@nbc_uk No, it's much longer than that. For mainline crossings, the crossing must be visually confirmed as clear before the signals can be cleared to allow the train to approach. That means the gates have to early enough than the train has time to stop if there's a vehicle trapped by the gates. Two of my routes home from work pass go over level crossings and you can easily be waiting five minutes if there's a train coming in each direction.

    Here's a scenario - You don't see the lights because you're following a big bus or truck and you hear a steam train whistle which drowns out the sound of the level crossing - Are you going to know that's the sound of a train because, not everyone has seen or heard a steam train whistle before. Maybe they need a Horn instead of a Whistle for these type of crossings?

    A very old film. Automatic barriers are mandatory now, even on the smallest crossings, sometimes operated by a treadle for the minor crossings.

    it was the signalling fault, because it went on too late as it should come at least 30 seconds to a minute before the train comes but it also has no barrier so imaging that one guy would pass through it. could've got hit!

    That train weighs nothing like a thousand tons. Fully fuelled and watered, the locomotive is about 165 tons. I think those are Mark 2 coaches, which weigh about 35 tons each. Five of them makes a total train weight of no more than 350 tons. Still beats a tractor, of course.

    The lights were on red when the tractor and car ran them, but I would estimate that the, I believe, mainline-crewed train was doing 10mph rather than the required 5mph.

    ​@@beeble2003so twice the number of red light jumpers would have crossed if the train had been at 5 mph. Obviously the locals know the timing to the nearest +/- ten seconds. I wonder how many of the horrified readers never jumped an amber, or better yet, a red light in their home country? Come on be honest. Yeh! I thought so.

    Looks like the train is doing about 10mph, which is twice the speed limit. So the road traffic should have had about twice as much warning.

    @@beeble2003 The train approaches the crossing at 5mph, as soon as it is on the crossing it is required to speed up to clear it. 5mph is an apprach limit.

    The thing is the car and the tractor driver both could be done for endangering the safety of persons using the railway. Which carries a sentence of: Magistrates court - 6 months’ imprisonment/unlimited fine Crown court - upto 2 years in imprisonment and unlimited fine. For one stupid act.....it's not worth it.. stop and let the train pass... It's not worth the fine or jail sentence

    Is this a heritage line, and not part of the national rail network? Having no crossing gates would suggest so.

    The crossing activated way too late and the crossing deactivated too early Normally crossings would deactivate after the train has fully crossed. Also with that tractor and car passing on a red light they should be given penatly's for passing the crossing when the red lights were flashing

    Nope, it worked exactly as designed. It is set for the low approach speed of the line's trains and AOCLs are designed to cancel the lights in that way, as there is no need to keep them running while the barrier lifts.

    Quite simply network rail should have no open crossings full stop. Road drivers would have no excuses then. Try watching American railroading videos, they'll give you nightmares 🇬🇧🇬🇧

    It's sad that car driving standards are so low that people genuinely expect to have physical barriers to prevent them driving into a train, as though flashing red lights, signs and sirens aren't enough

    @@zoomanx9661 What about traffic lights on pedestrian crossings or junctions. Do they need barriers? A few drivers need a fixed penalty notice and a £80 fine, to teach them to follow the rules.

    26 seconds is standard and clearly plenty of time. Edit: the car passed over the crossing 10s after the yellow warning light had come on. If you can't react in 10s then you shouldn't be driving. He clearly knew he was breaking the law.

    @@xaiano794 If you cross just as the lights turn on and your car breaks down on the track, there really is no time to do much. What if you have a kid strapped in a safety seat in the back? 26 seconds is really not a lot of time.

    @@CristiNeagu how could such a scenario possibly occur? You could just roll the car past the crossing if the engine stopped, if it stopped prior then you'd stop before the crossing. 26s is standard on all automatic crossings around the country and there are thousands of them.

    @@xaiano794 What if the car doesn't roll? What if the panicked driver doesn't think and stops on the tracks? It can happen easily. And just because something is standard it doesn't mean it's a good idea. It used to be standard that some illnesses were treated with mercury. It wasn't a good idea.

    @@CristiNeagu If the car doesn't roll how would it get on the tracks to start with? If the driver actively chooses, in a panic, that the very best place to stop is right on the tracks then they clearly shouldn't be driving a vehicle. I mean if they do things like that they might just stop in the fast lane of a motorway because the engine stopped or something, they are too dangerous to be on the road. I don't see how delaying drivers longer by having the crossing close sooner would help if you expect drivers to willfully put themselves in harms way - if they are going to choose to stop on the crossing, what would an extra 30s do?

    Yeah I agree, although I'm also aware that there is no way that the driver had slowed the train down to 5mph which is the set limit for both crossings.
