    I like how in Europe they run steam excursions on the main line where in the US steam locomotives are confined to small tourist railroads.

    Very nice, well chosen locations and angles, very scenic. When we lived in Dusslingen south of Tuebingen in 1971-72, there were still steam loks in production, I recall, one came through the station at Dusslingen regularly, I suspect primarily freight, although I cannot remember for sure. I commuted daily to Tuebingen for university studies that year, every day on the trains.

    Honestly Im glad Germany kept these around considering most if them were made during Germanys historic period most, understandably, HATE talking about. These could have easily been relegated to scrap to "bury the dark history" but thankfully cooler heads prevail here still, knowing these beautiful machines are part of German history and should be respected as such :3

    The first engine after the intro (I don't know what the class is.) plus flying scotsman double header would be perfect, they both have TWO TENDERS just on their own, plus the smoke deflectors. It's just a shame they aren't on the same gauge.

    The water consumption of a 01 is around 12 to/hr, the tender can hold 38m3. Tanking that much water takes quite some time today with water cranes and towers being rare. The local hydrant takes around 30min to feed that.

    Some even call it like this. But every locomotive built before 1925 had a other color than black. The locomotives built before 1925 were just painted black when the German railways were unified. The Bavarian S3/6 is green or the BR 05 is red. There are also some blue locomotives. But the preferred colors were green and red.

    How difficult was it to reconnect to former East German rail lines following reunification? Did the signaling vary in the 40 years apart? Were there routes abandoned in favor of new ones? Was DB and DRB considered a merger like we have with railroads in the US? I'm sure the DDR locomotives were run until they were retired and replaced with more modern equipment. Are there former DDR locomotives and cars still in service?

  • @leeseisenbahnen

    @leeseisenbahnen

    9 ай бұрын

    During the division of Germany, there were always railroad lines connecting East and West Germany. The signal system of the GDR is also still partly in operation. Also, some of the locomotives and carriages are still used today by private railroad companies on the national network.

    German high speed steam engines like BR 01, BR 03 or BR 18 have 3 to 4 large wheels in order to reach higher speed. Steam engines that where build for freight transport like BR 41 or BR 50 usualy have 5 to 6 really small wheels to be able to tow heavy freight cars filled with steel or coal.
