Steam Shovel Lost Underwater for 95 Years - 2023 Update

Ғылым және технология

This THEW type O Steam Shovel is being restored by my dad, Mike (Fixie) Oberloier. In this video I tried to catalog some of the progress that he's made this year, as well as share some of the history and knowledge he's uncovered along the way.

Back when the iron was thick enough the rust can't kill it.

The rust has killed any chance of it ever working again but it might be able to run with a new boiler and just enough weight to tension the cable ropes.

My plan is to make it dig again, with all 3 steam engines rebuildable and a different boiler that part is good. For the steel I’m replacing the bad beams and to have is structural safe to run.

The rust didn't kill her. she's still strong enough and there's more than enough solid iron left to save and work with to restore her.

Do you know who made that engine? Was it the same company? I have one that’s identical to that one, has a few casting numbers but no manufacturer. I’m just curious

According to Dad, Thew made the engines themselves. If you get a chance message wixomlakesteamshovel@gmail.com to get in touch,, Dad would be curious or learn what you have. Thanks!
