Steam Powered Freight on the Strasburg Railroad - July 13, 2012

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Early in the morning, before the first excursion leaves the station in Strasburg, the Strasburg Railroad will sometimes run to the NS interchange at Leaman Place to pick up freight cars. This is a relatively new operation for the SRC, as freight traffic just returned to the railroad a couple of years ago but has since growth significantly. These trains sometimes use steam power, making this one of the last steam-powered revenue freight services in North America. The SRC handles a variety of freight traffic, including lumber, grain, fertilizer, and biofuels. Seeing modern freight equipment together with historic steam locomotives is quite an interesting sight.
We'll start off seeing the 90 depart Strasburg eastbound with its caboose. Then, we'll watch the freight train move west at Cherry Hill. Finally, we will watch as the 90 sets off its freight on the team track adjacent to the parking lot in Strasburg.
A note on composition: I forgot my tripod at home for this one, so I was forced to make a number of improvised tripods in order to create this video. As a result some of the scenes aren't composed entirely the way I would have wanted them, but wish a limited amount of props available to hold my camera there wasn't else to do. Some clips are a little unlevel as well. I apologize for this, but I tried make the best of it so that I could still get a good quality video.

Thanks! They got out of Strasburg around 6:45AM and returned about an hour later. I think they pick up cars Wednesday and Friday as of now.

WOW... You got some great pre-dawn light to work with...or was that more cloud cover than anything? You were able to get some great angles that way (better than what I had to work with). Great job!

Since they're doing steam freight now, when 7312 comes back next year, they will have a little steam switcher to shunt the cars in the yard.
