When I see a steam deck I still have flashbacks of the old Sega GameGear. That thing took 6 AA batteries at a time and went through them faster than tic-tacs. To this day I am convinced that the battery acid levels in our soil leeching off from landfills are probably %60+ from AA batteries trashed from the GameGear era. Now I know that the Steam Deck, like nearly all hand-held tech these days, uses a rechargeable battery but, that that doesn't seam to help the slight case of PTSD that GameGear gave my generation lol.

To be clear, I did not own the original Deck, but I've thoroughly enjoyed the Deck OLED, you can play pretty much any steam game out of the box, and it is not hard to install games via installers outside steam, emulators and more. I'd only advise against if you plan to play with games that use easy anti cheat (fortnite, MW, some others)

I bought it, and I'm regretting so much. This device doesn't work on Windows, because it's a unfinished product. The LCD is perfectly compatible with audio driver, but not the OLED. And I don't think I should be stuck on SteamOS, because it's a PC. At this point, I'm returning it and buying an Ayaneo.

If you want to effectively guarantee you'll never get burn in then you should only use Steamdeck at the "50%" brightness setting. Steamdeck OLED and Switch OLED use basically the same screen, when Wulf Den did the Switch OLED burn-in test it took 10,000 hours to see significant signs of burn-in, meanwhile when Phawx did a Steamdeck burn it test it only took around 1,000 to see burn in. The difference is Switch runs 400nits and Steamdeck runs 600nits, which means if you keep Steamdeck at "50%" you'll have the same 400nits brightness as the Switch OLED. (Because Steamdeck actually reaches maximum brightness at the 75% setting, so 50% is actually 2/3 of maximum, which equates to 400nits out of the 600nits maximum.)

I regularly worry about burn in and overall wear and tear on my OLED deck, but then I remember Valve has done a TON in terms of user repair-ability, obviously it's not the same for everyone, and that's perfectly fine, it's always okay to have the opinion of, 'I paid money for it, it shouldn't have (major) problems and I shouldn't have to fix it myself.' But if anything happens to my deck, I can always order official parts and follow official guides to fix the deck regardless of what's wrong. My only worry is since I have the limited edition, if I buy new parts, they're gonna be the regular SD parts and not any of the LE parts (Which I mean is really only the shell, joysticks, and rear vent, but still).

In my opinion Steamdeck OLED really shines at 6-9 watts. Any time I run a game past 10 watts the gains are marginal, it's only the newest games that really demand 10+ watts to hit the 45fps minimum (which is the lowest framerate anyone should ever use because it provides better input lag than 50fps while saving 10% more power).

I have been using the steam deck OLED since it’s released and I’ve been using it more like a PC rather than you would on Nintendo switch, but I must say that it is amazing especially because most of my computers have been hammy downs in performance and usage in general it works beautifully. Just know that if you’re playing GTA five in desktop mode, you don’t want any other programs open whatsoeveror else Steam will just freeze and it won’t crash. It’ll just try to continuously load through. It works other than that. It is beautiful.

The craziest thing about the Steam Deck is that it runs older PC games more reliably than modern Windows does. Very often I'll install something on my Windows laptop only to have it instantly crash to desktop, or have some gamebreaking bug that stops it from working. I try instead on the Deck and it works first try.

With text being too small and UI scaling designed without considering portable form factor, it causes significant eye strain for me with only an hour of gaming or less. I find it pretty frustrating as a lot of the games runs really well performance wise, but turns out to be unplayable for me because of text size, and that account for nearly half of the games that I’ve tried so far. One great example is Monster Hunter World. I love this game, but I can’t play it because of this issue.

Nah Oled still has messed up sound compared to the lcd. I view it as more of a trade off in comparison than an everything is improved type of thing. Yet as always with valve it's a firmware/software thing so returning it will just get you more of the same. The biggest surprise for me is the quality control issues the steam deck is still plagued with. You had people talking about sanding their buttons cause they were sticking and the oled 1tb limited I guess had screen issues. Just... lol

Sold my Steam deck after getting the Ally. Its just far better in many ways. The sound is at least twice as good and games run more smooth. All games work on the Ally because they were made to run on windows. The Rog Ally 2 will be out shortly to keep it in the lead.

Battery life sucks on the Ally. Plus you have all the negatives of Windows like the annoying updates and the tinkering. Steam OS is far superior in terms of UI and door to window time of gaming. And their customer service is horrendous. The Steam community experience is miles better.

A buddy finally put windows on his steam deck so he could play cod online. I took the oled steam deck to work and someone brought the ally. We had like 5 people buy the ally. No one really liked the steamdeck. I work with windows so it’s easy for me to use the ally. It’s worth a little extra time. I am getting the Ally x with double battery life.

@@ReluctantAnarchist Steam Deck OLED or Legion Go? It's been like two weeks and I still haven't made by mind up. However, I'm leaning towards the steam deck oled. Keep in my mind I already have two windows 11 gaming PCs in my house, the Linux based SteamOS is compelling to me because of the form factor. My main PC I use with the quest 3 is high end, 3080 ti, 32 gigs of ram, 6.5 tbs, ryzen 5 processor so super high specs in a handheld doesn't really mean much to me. What do you personally think I should do. Like I said, I'm leaning towards the deck oled, just need a 3rd party opinion to tell me it's the right call. Thanks bro!

Also if you decide to upgrade don't forget about mura effect on oled screens. It's very noticeable on the steam deck oled. Also there is green tint when you are caping the frame rate below 90hz, it's noticeable in low light environment and dark scenes. It also has problems with my wifi 6 router, and the original doesn't. Also there is static noise when you use wired headphones through 3.5 minijack. Oled model is not perfect just remember that, think twice when upgrading. Your review is good but you didn't say anything about that and im pretty disappointed

@@shto4782 The mura effect is so negligible, you really hardly see it. Valve uses OLED panels from two different manufacturers, Samsung and BOA. Mine is Samsung I definitely can't have any complaint about it, not even the greenish tint as you wrote above. Maybe BOA has some problems... In addition, a mura effect reduction is already introduced in the upcoming update.
