Steam Deck - Is the Queue System Really Better Than MS and Sony's Approach?

Ойындар

Valve used a queue system for Steam Deck pre-orders but with as few as 10% of customers actually receiving the console, is their approach really any better than the competition?

    I think it's less about "when" you get your Steam Deck and more about the fact that you are now guaranteed one in whatever quarter you were assigned. You may have been able to snag an Xbox and a Playstation but I still know people who check as often as they can and still can't get one. With the reservation system, you can just place the reservation, see what quarter you're in, and sit back and just wait knowing that you will get one for sure. Not many people could get a Playstation, not many people could get an Xbox, and probably not many people have a Steam Deck right now. They all have that in common. The only difference is that the people who want a Steam Deck know that they will 100% get one during whatever quarter they have, where as people who couldn't get a Playstation or Xbox when it came out had no clue when or if they will get one. So since you already have a PS5 and an Xbox, I can see why you might think this system is worse than if they would've just done it how Sony and Microsoft did it because you're thinking you would've gotten one way earlier. But to people who took way longer to get a PS5/Xbox or maybe even STILL don't have one, they probably wish that Sony and Microsoft would've done it this way. And I think there are way more people who really struggled to get a next-gen console compared to people like me who was able to get a preorder in. Also, just to add to your dataset I guess, I ordered the 512GB version a few minutes after it was out and received mine in the 3rd week of March. I live in the U.S.

    @@REXae86 that's great but it's not like I said that it was impossible. Of course as time passes it will get easier and easier to get one. That doesn't change the fact that there are still people today following "PS5 Live" accounts to snag one because they still don't have one.

    I ordered the 256GB model. It took me 7 minutes from the time it launched to get checked out. My expected availability always said Q1 22. I got it in the last week of March. It seems to have updates every day , as Valve constantly improves it. The UI is smooth. Boots up , shows a Steam logo , and then shows my library. The store and settings are all easy to navigate. Plays games very well. I've been on Elden Ring and Jedi Fallen Order mostly. Both play great. It's definitely worth every penny , AND the wait.

    Valve said they would up production from 10s of 1000s in Q1 to 100s of 1000s in Q2 and beyond. I don't think they anticipated this amount of people wanting one. I think it is a better system. I'd rather know when I'm getting my console rather than just hoping to get one. It's over a year since the next gen consoles came out and it can still be difficult to get one, especially the PS5.

    Here in Texas PS5s are at every other pawnshop. And there’s been so many Series X/S Xboxes at the pawnshops that I wondered if the latest Xbox was a flop. Good thing about releasing it like main companies do is it gets to main outlets as well. Switch went on sale at every retailer. Nintendo was strong and confident in their product. If it gets sold out, they’ll just restock the next batch. By a few months, the world has a Switch. It appears as Valve is not as confident in their device so instead of the funds it takes to send these thru big name retails, they rather “skip” fast demand and just “email” folks few at a time and mail it to them. Maybe they just don’t have enough. They’re using FedEx to get the Decks out to people in two days, yet some folks wait 6 months to a year before getting one? There’s a bottleneck SOMEWHERE. It doesn’t make sense. They use cheap plastics and AMD/Linux stuff for the hardware/software. Just send these things out into the wild and just focus on software updates. The hardware is the hardware. I think it also may signal that the idea to “sell at a loss” is not going as they planned. Sure everyone wants one (to try at least), but I don’t hear of a new mass movement of folks joining Steam. Lots of big games can be bought from their creators for discounts and all. I hope they succeed in their plans.

    @@ShogunnxYT How much are the Xbox X/S and PS5 at the pawnshops in your area? Xbox series in uk are in stock quite often now. PS5 consoles are still selling for 20-30% more on ebay in the UK. I think that Valve didn't know how much interest there would be. I think they are upping production but that takes time. Now that it isn't much of a risk they can afford to produce more. PlayStation and Xbox can produce 5 million on day one and they know all would be gone. Valve did not have the luxury of knowing the Steam Deck would sell so well.

    @@danielsmith7247 ps5 at these pawnshops are from 650-800. I’ve seen one for 575. I worry that maybe Valve is NOT hitting the numbers they expected. As you say, Xbox and PS5 can make a million units with confidence that they’ll be gone. Guess who else can do that? The Switch. As for the Steam Deck, aside from the group of enthusiasts and those that just really think it’s cool, I don’t really hear about it. Nintendo was smart. They AIMED the Switches for the kids, which automatically contracted the parents. I fear the Steam Deck started by aiming for the adults/upper teens. Now in reality, almost every kid can use a Switch. Just dump them off to kids with Smash brothers and some other “Fun over technology “ games and they’re good. As for adults/upper teens…. We work, or go to school. And majority of us have some kind of woman/intimate relationship that wants to eat most of our free time. And the ones who can break away from that, Sony is there making masterpieces to put in your Livingroom and Xbox is there (with the headphones). Sony is the best example of failure in trying to appeal to adults first. PSVita is beautiful, capable , portable, etc. But pearly blacks are for adults. When you think of PSVita , you think homebrew…. Failure. My point is, if Valve isn’t able to win over the kids, all WE tech guys can do is hope to get all the drivers it takes to make the Deck work with Windows, cuz it’s gonna end up being a cheaper version of an Aya Neo or GPD Win. Other companies were smart in charging so much cuz if AYA tanks, we still got a cool device that’s powerful enough to play pc games and anything.

    @@danielsmith7247 1-2 million? I doubt it. I FEEL a weak presence of the Steam Deck in real life. Think about the presence of Switch. When it came out, it really came out. All retailers were getting them, the gamestops, Walmarts we’re building shelves over them, everyone knew. Switch became a household name fast. I don’t even like Nintendo products and I have 3 switches in the house. The Switch does so well That almost every other handheld is compared to the Switch. That’s a presence. That power is so good that all Nintendo did was change the screen to Oled, and now Switch is new all over again. Now look at the presence of everyone who’s tried to fight the Switch. Ambernics , GDP, OnexPlayer, Odin…. All of them combined seem not to be able to even get the Switches attention. Switch is too busy fighting against actually real consoles, Sony and Xbox, and not even doing badly against them. Yes the Steam Deck has power, and potential. But so does GDP. In fact, GPD is tryna be smart by NOT advertising their devices as gaming primarily. Their devices have more utility than Deck does. It takes more than this to beat the Switch. Deck has Steam software, but it’s more buggy and restricted on its own device, PLUS it’s not even exclusive. While we fumble around with Gparted and no sound in Windows, everything can run SteamOS. That’s not the case with the Switch. That’s why Nintendo only got involved when KZreadrs showed the Deck playing a Switch game. That’s the Switches stronghold and their weakness. They don’t care how vastly powerful a competing device is, as long as the Switch is the only way to play their Nintendo exclusives on the go, they win. If GPD shows videos of WIN3 with that Switch emulator running, their gonna get mad. That is the way of beating Switch. Now with Valve not even able to perfect their own OS on their own device, this is an uphill battle. You know who could do it right? Apple lol. The Apple Deck would be an almost immediate threat to Switch lol

    The Steam Deck queue depends on your region (US/Can/Eu/Uk are separated) and model. "I ordered within the first few hours" ha lol In ordered within the first 20 minutes for the 512, and I'm in q2. My model turned out to be the popular version. Also, production has definitely ramped up. We're getting 2 batches a week compared to just 1. That's definitely doing something for those on the steam deck discord and reddit I rather wait for my system that's already reserved than try to get lucky with bestbuy, etc.

    I didn't even have a Steam account until the Deck came along, so I'm in the October to December crowd, but I'm more than happy with the wait. This was actually an amazing release, in the sense that those who got in first, are very much beta tester, but the updates and features added weekly is insane. I don't know what some here are talking about when saying they expected more content, every day I see tons of videos from old faces, as well as the new. Game performance, new features, how to swap memory, how to set the track pads for different needs. Hell, I could probably spend a month just trying to learn all the settings and options on this thing. By the time I get mine, any hardware hiccups will be gone, and the software will be very mature, so I see it as a WIN/WIN honestly.

    I think a big factor with the pre sales was the ultra low barrier to entry. Having backed GPD on IGG, the fact that you had to pay full price upfront, immediately weeded out the purely enthusiastic fans. We don't know how many people had or will cancel their deck order because they didn't have cash on hand when it's their turn. Up to now, this probably has put the actual buyers weeks behind. I sense now Valve have recognized this and decided to contact reservations twice a week to compensate. Had Valve asked for %50 payment upfront, at least for the higher end models, the wait time I believe would've been less. Probably someone at Valve thought $5 reservations would greatly increase the numbers. It did, but how many of that will translate into actual sales and how it impacted paying customers in terms of wait-in-line time are the questions. Edit- my 512gb order went through at the 23 minute mark and I don't have zilch at this time. Meanwhile I'm seeing people who ordered after me but from a different region, reporting that have their device already. Not sure how the logistics are working at Valve but GPD did a better job of shipping the units out. Edit 2 - There's a thread on Reddit with people who are now near their purchase time but are getting cold feet. This is just a small vocal sample of those who will let their reservation go. Many others we will never hear from. This is another example of why the $5 reservation was not the greatest idea.

    I strongly disagree with you. First of all, I ordered my Steam Deck in the first couple of seconds in the EU and I saw the expected shipment time go up very fast in the first few minutes. It reached the after Q3 time frame (or what the maximum was that it showed on that day) already after maybe 30 minutes. Two hours after the preorder going live was a very loooong time. Probably most of all preorders were made in the first 1-2 hours so of course you are not one of the first in the queue. Also your argument that some people that ordered later than you will get the device earlier is true for different markets. Valve basically has one queue for each region. If you are in the queue for US with more people interested in the device and more preorders in the same timeframe you could indeed ended up later in the queue. Valve probably calculated their production rates for each region that they produce/sell it in and accordingly configured the queue for that region. Comparing the different regions and queues does not make any sense because they are completely independent. Also your argument that Valve did not ship many units is based on surveys with a sample size of 28 and one of about 300, with preorders of the device in the 100-thousands or even millions. So yes, as you say yourself, with those sample-sizes there is no argument to be made. Also the subreddit implies that there are quite a few devices out there even though not enough to meet the demand. Valve is still pretty new as a hardware manufacturer and their production capacities won't keep up with the established players in the console space like Sony, MS or Nintendo anytime soon. Valve can't easily produce millions of these devices in comparison to Sony etc. In addition to that how could they expect that many preorders for a device in a completely new device category? Its not like they could easily predicted that and even if they did they couldn't scale their facilities that fast. Even Sony did not expect that high demand for their Playstation 5 and we are more than a year in the new console generation and people can not just buy it without some trouble. So yes of course you can get a Playstation 5 or XBOX Series "easier" than a Steam Deck now. That is why I think their way of preorder was the right way to do it. With the limited production capacities this way is way better than waiting for the scalpers to dictate the prices and gambling for getting a device. For all the people in the queue its a matter of time not a gamble to get one.

    The reason it took longer to order was because the site kept crashing. I even made a video about it at the time. It was a complete bloody mess. If it hadn't have kept crashing I would have ordered within the first few seconds of the pre-orders going live. The fact that I couldn't do that is on Valve, not me. I have no control over their servers.

But I did order within the first 10-15 mins of launch I do like the fact they go off of accounts that have a library of games already and not new accounts. Alas I did sell mine but only because between buying and shipping I managed to secure a 3060/12gb from Best Buy. Maybe there are other like me that happened to get a card when the GPU shortages started to eased and their decks shipped out. For giggles I tried to order another 256gb and it went through for q3 October or later ship. Kept it open as my nephew will probably ask for it. Should add that early on when Steam Deck went up for reservation, the people who put in their reservation early on were the believers. As the months pass and more information about the device was released, more people became interested in it and probably reserved one. It was 7 months between when reservations starting and the launch of the Steam Deck. That's 7 months of collecting reservations and probably (my guess) millions of units reserved. I have my doubts that they will be able to fill those 7months worth of cached reservations before the year is up. There was probably another spike of reservations during the February media blitz for the launch. For the people who didn't reserve one prior to launch (they waited for the release and the reviews), it's possible that they could be waiting till mid to late 2023.

There are also way more who want those consoles than the Steam Deck but there likely is also way more produced of those consoles than Steam Deck. Valve does also plan on having Steam Deck in retail stores but since they are already filled up with pre-orders they'll wait until that has died down more until opening up for retail. They still haven't opened up to whole world with their own site but maybe for logistics reasons for other regions it will be send to their respective retails instead of Valve having to handle it themselves in those areas. For what it's worth, I've belonged to dedicated discord servers and had bots running for two years now and still haven't managed to get a ps5. Like, it's rediculous that I need to be so specifically active to get a ps5. And "small number of videos", "small number of people polled"... The queue is tens of thousands long, and only the smallest (q1) have been allowed theirs. The influencers had early access to devices too, which is likely why their videos exist. Meanwhile, there's not even proof scalpers HAVE units. If you search online, there's more than a few using the same picture repeatedly, making it look like they have units but based on Reddit comments, it's a slim number of those postings that actually deliver. So between the two choices: paying five dollars to be in a very long line OR trying to best tens of thousands of people when double digits worth of units drip out of ms/Sony? I pick the line.

I'm sure Valve have been trying to correct any faults as production increases. I guess it all depends on what you are happy to live with in the end. For me 1 RMA would be my maximum then i'd give up on it.

    It's a good way of fighting off Scalpers and BOTs, how many people got the PS5 and XBOX or a new GPU unit at launch not a lot, you can't even order online due to bots... and to take in is that there's pandemic which restricted logistics across the world.. though there are still people selling their devices on EBAY from 900-1400$ imagine if those people who got in first wasn't limited to 1 device/account what do you think will happen? lots of factors to consider.. silicon chip shortages and all too.. but now things are ramping back up im thinking it'll go smoothly.. I pre-ordered mine on July 2021 Q1 64GB Version got an email on the March 28 took 1-2day processing 2-day shipping via fedex received it Apr.1st last week. (this may vary by country). Valve might have not anticipated this big of a demand with the steam deck right? that too to consider.. I hope everyone who pre-ordered get their decks soon... for what it's worth.. it's worth waiting for(for me it is).. and by that time you get them devices.. more fixes and improvements and compatible games may have been rolled out. im still learning the linux side of things in desktop mode.

    Having a smaller number of customers using the Steam Deck probably also helps Valve improve it with software updates before more customers receive it. Improving UX, game compatibility, etc. A system like this really seems like a Beta product (not a bad thing in this case).

    Valves method ensures that as much true users get their product as possible. As less scalpers as possible. That ensures a steady flow of products to actual users. What it doesn’t change is the amount of products that are being made. You are comparing the speed of delivery of product to the amount of products that are being made. How can you say something useful about the reservation and shipping method when the main reason it’s slow is supply of product? That’s not the same. If anything, this method ensures that the Steam Deck is not out of stock for years due to scalpers and their bots. Xbox and Sony were definitely shipping more consoles than Steam is, but the consoles were still out of stock, due to the the scalpers. And yes there were less consoles than usual, but I’m sure there were more Xbox’s and PlayStations back then then there Steam Decks being made right now

And I'm not prepared to pay scalping prices on Ebay or other stores. The other things is that living in Slovenia we always get stuff very late, but Valve is handling us as EU citizens for a change which is nice. Hope that I get the Steam Deck in April and that its not going to be end of Q2.

    I'm pretty much just asking a question. I do think there are problems with the Steam Deck launch but I've said elsewhere that I thought it was marginally better than what we have seen with the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. I'm in two minds about that, though. When it takes over a year to get the product in the hands of someone who ordered within minutes of the pre-orders going live, there's definitely something wrong. They might have been better holding off on the launch for a few months and building up the inventory. I'm not entirely sure about that but at least it would have meant those who were in the first wave of pre-orders would have got their Steam Decks in a more timely manner (maybe).

    I'd say Valve did a lot better with the stock they are cabable of making, and also they have nowhere near the capability to produce units or the demand as the consoles have. If Valve had done the same as The console manufacturers, the percentage of people who had been able to get one would have been a lot lower. If 10% of the demand would actually have been covered in these two months It's actually pretty amazing. But Valve also has a unique position in that they only sell these through Steam. So it's easier to manage scalping and people who really wanted one were more likely to get one. The largest demerit is that you actually only had one chance to be early so you don't have the option to "skip in line" by waiting for new batches. Every ps5 batch I tried to order in within first year were sold out within 10 minutes and sites were crashing, so it was really stressful and frustrating. Also took part in every single lottery and queue system I could find without any luck. It's much easier to get one now since the system has been out for a while. But from what I hear it is still pretty difficult. For the steam deck, I was actually able to get it in march, one of the first batches.

    When you said you ordered yours a year ago that is incorrect. They were not available yet a year ago. That was a pre order. The Steam Decks have been only out since January of this year. Steam did not expect the that nearly as many people would want the Steam Decks and were not prepared for that many pre orders. So yes when the Steam Deck released in January of this year (only a few months ago), sales had to be spread out over the the year, even with ramping up production as much as they could in a short time. Ramping up the production of anything doesn't happen over night. Even with all the money in the world. You need to expand facilities, or build new ones. Hire a bunch of new staff. People need to be a bit more patient. At least you know you are getting one and roughly when. Some people may be able to use that time to save up for it and games.

    I think your maths are a little off. Orders went up in July 2021. That means it'll be well over a year from initially pre-ordering it to receiving it. It could even end up being two years for some who didn't order on the day the pre-orders went live. And let's not forget that the Steam Deck was originally supposed to have released at the end of 2021. Basically, some people aren't getting this thing in their hands for a very long time and by the time they do something better may have come along (possibly from Valve themselves).

    PS5 is a ton of luck or have bots, but you can try again and again. Steam Deck is just waiting, getting postponed and getting frustrated. Because you can´t do anything else as wait. When you have the Luck to get it early, it´s great, you know "damn I will get it in Q1" or whatever, but for people like me, who got moved from Q2 to after Q3, this is frustrating as hell... These are my thoughts about this, PS5 was pretty "easy" for me because i was damn lucky to preorder one from Amazon France and got it delivered on day 2 to Germany.

    i don't understand what exactly is the problem? first let's clarify that last year you DIDN'T order yours, you preordered it, or reserved it. so it's not 1 year after the order, you still haven't actually ordered it. i guess this is semantics. but if we are looking it like that, then let's at least look it from the time of launch, which was 25th or 28th of February this year, not July from last year. i mean technically the reservations could have been launched at any time... start of 2021, even mid 2020... because those were preorders/reservations. like a game in preorder, you don't get it soon after the preorder was placed... it's not how it works, it just depends how soon in the development cycle, the preorders were open. and that is not an indication of anything for the actual order/shipments. next - yes, most pre-orders have not been fulfilled yet. that's even (kind of) confirmed and explained from valve. they have stated that shipments would be kind of slow at the start and then ramp up later as time progress. i mean if 80% of people have received their decks already, there won't be estimations like Q3 and After Q3, would it? it would not make sense also even with the increase in shipments they have stated (two times a week instead of one), it's in the plan, so yes, that will not change the estimations you see for your shipment. it just means that the amount of shipments are not linear thing. so if 10% received it for the first month, for the next month around 20% will receive it (maybe. i don't know the exact increase of course). so i don't understand the problem? is the problem that more people have not received theirs, compared to those who received it? i mean it was expected, explained... from valve, and beforehand, not after the fact... i mean i don't understand why the surprise. valve said the shipments would be slower at the start, and we are surprised that is in fact the case? so as for the question at hand - is it better approach than sony's and ms's approach? it depends on the point of view. there are good things and bad things about this approach, and it depends which ones you weight more. the bad thing is that specific customers would wait while other would have thiers, and he won't be able to do anything about it. the good thing is that he is guaranteed to receive his at one point. no scalper can get his specific unit. also a good thing is that some other people will receive theirs when they are ready. if it was a full blown launch, even though a lot of units would be ready, people would wait for all of them to be ready for a launch. instead now, people are receiving theirs as soon as their specific unit is ready. so even in your case, while you have to wait while some other people have already received thiers, which kind of sucks, you will receive yours in Q3, and won't have to wait for those who are in Q4. if it was the other way around everyone would have to wait for those who are in Q4 and after. and on top, if there were no reservations, we may have to wait for like another year to actually get one because of scalpers and such p.s I'm from Europe, i ordered mine about 3h after they opened the reservations, also 512 version, and i'm also in Q2... so i don't know how this guy can also be in Q2. i guess there are just not many orders after mine for europe.

    The problem is that Valve are not getting orders out to people. The fact is that it was supposed to have been available at the end of last year and most people will not have received their Steam Decks even into next year. And good luck if you are trying to order one now. Basically, this was little more than a paper launch and the more time that passes the more it looks like valve didn't adequately prepare for demand. However you cut it people were pre-ordering last June (if I remember my dates correctly). One year later most still haven't seen the product and most won't get one until next year at the earliest. Both Xbox and Sony have managed to ship far more units in a similar timeframe and yet they continue to get flack for supply shortages. I'm just saying Valve shouldn't get a pass when other companies are criticised when they are actually doing better in many respects.

  • @IcoKirov

    @IcoKirov

    @@JoeChip why "it was supposed to be available last year"? They never said that everyone will get their units by the end of last year. Yes, they were not able to provide the demand from the very start, but they were open about it. The information about the initial delay and everything else was public. At any one point people knew what was happening, when they can get a unit and so on. And I mean, what company managed to keep up with the demand? Laptops were out of stock the moment reviews were up. Even car manufacturers couldn't keep up, and you have to wait like a year for a car... I'm not saying valve should be forgiven for that, I'm saying they can be given some slack because of the openness and the assurance that you can get your unit. Sony and Microsoft are huge companies, big manufacturers, of course they can push more units, but in the launch period, info was kind of scarce. If you want a unit, you have to be lucky to get one, and if not, you are not sure what is happening, the moment stores get more consoles, scalpers buy them all, so what can you do? Do you wait for the next batch in the stores, or go and get one from the scalpers? When would even the next batch come? Would they be grabbed by scalpers? When would the scalpers stop getting all so you can get a console? Valve approach is not perfect, nor perfectly executed, but at least you know "well I'm getting mine in q4, no matter the scalpers"

  • @masterkutai
    @masterkutai2 жыл бұрын

    I dont understand this. If the Steam Deck is being sold retail, with the exact same number of units, and you do the poll, guess what? Not that many people got them anyway. The units are limited anyway. And if they have shipment for 4 quarters, the maximum number of people who are going to answer "yes I've got mine" in a quarter, would be... well, a quarter. That is if its evenly distributed, which we know its not, since the production is going to start small and increase in numbers. So I guess 10% is quite a fair estimation. Now to counter that you can actually keep on looking on for other console, yes, without the queue system you can have better chance, since you are one of those people who keeps checking the availability. With the queue system, it gives the same chance for people that keeps checking availability, and those who checks it only twice a week in their email. Whether its fair or not, I am not going to argue either way.

    Your numbers are quite useless, as you've noticed yourself. Furthermore you fail to compare the queue itself but rather the production capabilities and your personal experience with purchasing. A queue would make purchasing more fair and would reduce scalpers opportunities. fact! Is the queue slower because of it? Most likely not! But I agree that the queue is "bad" for ppl that got the time and energy to "fight" for the chance to overtake others in their opportunity to purchase one. So if you're more the type that likes "law of the strong one" than you're most likely in favor of sonys approach.

    It’s a terrible strategy for users but great for Valve. Ps5 and Xbox are considered finished products whereas Steam Deck is releasing scared. They want to hide behind the idea that it’s a project basically, which gives them time to “fix” stuff. Hurts the rest of the market as well since folks are using the paper stats to trumph this over other handhelds that cost more but are readily available. They brag about how their $399.99 device is better than the $800+ devices , but I have yet to see anyone pay only 399.99 and actually have one NOW. I bought one, but it costed me $800 to get one in my hands, and I INSTANTLY had to put an SSD in it. Also, tech advances pretty fast. If it takes you a year to get something wouldn’t competition be able to overshadow it? My biggest problem with Steam Deck is it’s too stretched out to look cool and practical. It looks like you’re playing an actual console on your lap vs an actual portable experience. And since Valve is “leaking” them out , it’s gonna be a while before you can safely take it anywhere with you.
