How nice to see Locomotives working an everyday life instead of just racing along the tracks

Thankyou very much, really enjoyed the nostalgia. There’s every chance that my Grandad was driving at least one of those black 5s!!! All the best Darren 👍

Brilliant footage! Good job those people filmed these gentle giants for prosperity.

Exactly, without their films it would be bleak having to rely solely on commercial output even though there is a lot of excellent material there.

Brilliant stuff. I have had the privilege of working at Edge Hill, Springs Branch and Arpley yards. I didn`t realise the Hillman Imp was that old, as seen in the shot next to The Morris Minor.

It brings back the memories doesn't it I was a fireman at Dallam , later a guard when I broke my service. I remember Imps were about, around the time I got my first car a Ford Anglia in 1965.

@@SuperDALLAMAN I worked with a Driver at Warrington ,in 1992 he was a fireman at Dallam, his name was Allan Donahough if i have spelt it right, A good lad. We had plenty of ex steam lads then. Sadly, they are no more. The last one retired about 2 yrs ago.

@@stephensmith4480 Yes a good lad Alan, I worked with him as a guard, got some film of us working the holding sidings at Arpley before the new depot opened on Arpley sidings, I think he passed on a few years ago.

@@SuperDALLAMAN Yes, I heard he passed a few years ago. We shunted in the old sidings, before the new Loco depot was built. They were all sidings then. E4 to E8 and through the Circle, which we called E9. Happy days mate.

I wish we could see the whole train - not just the engine. In many cases the filming stops as soon as the loco has gone past.

Some of those locos look brutalised - steam leaking from every possible orifice, unwashed, chime-whistle on 'Hotspur' bronchitic, and generally run-down on purpose to justify their extinction. It's a tribute to British engineering that they were able to perform for so long in such a disgraceful condition.

In 1966 I saw a black 5 on the Glasgow - Birmingham through Wigan. It sounded like a bag of spanners, steam leaks everywhere. I was amazed it could move at all.

Personally mes amours...As youngsters in Ireland, we always loved it when the trains passed by at a leisurely rate, as it provided us a great chance to bounce a few ripe tomatoes off some of the pork-pie-faced blokes who stuck their mugs out the window/door openings. Blimey, what fun. ESPECIALLY if they were holding a pint a' bitters that they then dropped! Ho-Ho-Ho!...as Monsieur Santa would say.
