Steam at Speed on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway | Volume 1 - 2019-2021

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, affectionately known as "Kent's Mainline in Miniature", is one of the best known narrow gauge railways in the UK. However, for all of its glittered history and intricate nuances, one of the other drawing spectacles of the line has been the impressive speeds and performances that the locomotives attain.
The RH&DR has a maximum speed limit of 25mph (restricted further on some sections). However, with the locomotives built to 1/3rd scale of their full size counterparts, the result means they're achieving a scale speed of 75mph - making for a fantastic sight across the Romney Marsh.
Over the last three years, the cameras have been lucky enough to catch a variety of the RH&DR fleet in steam, hammering along the Kent coast at speed.
Locomotives:
RH&DR Pacific Class - No1 "Green Goddess"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No8 "Hurricane"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No5 "Hercules"
RH&DR Bug Class - No4 "The Bug"
RH&DR Mountain Class - No6 "Samson"
RH&DR 'North American' Pacific Class - No9 "Winston Churchill"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No2 "Northern Chief"
RH&DR Pacific Class - No3 "Southern Maid"
RH&DR Krupp Pacific Class - No11 "Black Prince"
All footage filmed on various dates during 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Wonderful! Takes me back to 1946 and a holiday with my aunt whose house backed onto the RHDR at Hythe. I was nearly 14 and the then manager, Major Holder, let me have two glorious days riding on the footplate with Driver Bob Hobbs (an ex Southern man who also built live steam models); he showed me how to operate the injectors and thereafter just nudged me and pointed to the water glass if I didn't keep it topped up. Happy days indeed! Thanks so much.

One of my favourite railways ,I think Gresley would smile to see the Gresley inspired engines running. And to think that most of the engines if not all have better whistles than the A3 Pacifics did.

Wonderful video of a fantastic railway: rode on it many times on childhood holidays. Like a giant train set, it celebrates the passion and love we have for trains with the eccentric charm that it's creator Captain Howey gave it. Long may these determined little trains race across the Kent countryside and bring joy to future generations.

An immensely enjoyable 20 minutes! The less than arrow-straight track means that the loco’s rock and roll a fair bit, which adds to the spectacle.

I imagine redoing the rail bed would be far from cheap. But if the railway could afford it somehow, they could probably push those little beasts even faster

That rabbit was lucky lol 😆. Great job, The locos can reach up to 40mph if there was no limits so I'm told, plus managed to shoot down 4 german aircraft during the war i believe.

I wouldn't really want to do 40mph on those tracks. Preserved railways are limited to 25, when I last watched one of these videos I'm pretty sure I found out these run at up to 20mph, but with a bit of track straightening and levelling I'm sure they'd be fine at the full 25mph for most of the route.

Well Matthew, this just reminds me of what a bunch of speed freaks there are on the old RHDR😨😲 Bet you had a hard job trying to find those clips, I mean, you don't get down there all that often🤔😃😅😂👍🏻👍🏻

They do seem to love giving the locos a chance to stretch their legs. It took quite a bit of digging through the archive - never seem to have enough clips. This video was created purely to see how many comments I could generate about their track - so far, it's going well.

A lovely little railway. But what concerns me is the state of the track which MUST add a lot of unnecessary wear to the axle boxes and bearings to those fine locomotives. How they stay on the track l can't imagine with at sometimes appearing to jump!

Seems to me that the tracks just need a bit of straightening - possibly smoothing the surface and re-laying them flat - would make a massive difference.

such a shame the p/way looks totally worn out I guess from this that the line is out of money thanks to Covid how long can the line last breaks my heart to see captain Howey's legacy in such a poor condition

With the track straightened and re-laid, I can't see why these locos couldn't do 35. Though all heritage railways are limited to 25.

Me thinks the track needs relaying as there sure will be a bad derailment soon. just look at the engines .

seems a shame the track looks in very poor condition, lack of investment? cant blame covid for everything, before long there will be a derailment and people hurt, what a shame as the engines look in real good condition but that track well

Tracks been like that for years, and nothing bad has happened as of yet, the camera does make it look worse as its stretched over a long distance, up close it seems fine. Track probably won't be replaced for a while yet unless something bad occurs, plus it makes the ride far more adrenaline filled lol.

If they re-laid the track (and levelled off the track surface) then I'm pretty sure the running speed could well be increased as well (at least up to the 25mph limit of heritage lines).
