Steal of the Draft? Indiana Pacers Draft Johnny Furphy

It was a surprise to many that Johnny Furphy wasn't selected in the first round of the NBA draft.
However, The Indiana Pacers GM saw an opportunity to get a top 20 talent and took advantage.
The 6-9 Australian averaged 9.0 points and 5 rebounds and earned Big-12 All-Freshman honors in his lone season at Kansas.
The Pacers love Furphy's aggressive play and see a natural fit with their own uptempo style.

Pacers fan here. I think this is arguably the best situation for Johnny to come into; a team with a deep bench so he won't be under pressure to contibute right away. Plus we have multiple ballhandlers so Johnny can develop playing off the ball in the corner - spotting up for 3, backdoor cuts, and attacking closeouts. Great pick, great fit.

As a Pacers fan, I’m definitely excited about his potential. He definitely needs to bulk up and his skill set is still developing. But at 19 with the ability run and transition and shoot well and hopefully defend with the current clogging of our roster spots, it’s a good time to take a chance on a 19-year-old with a lot of potential.

@@sports360media I think Newton was more of a steal than Furphy. Furphy needs a lot of development. Newton just may contribute right away.

Landed in a perfect situation. No pressure to perform right away and the coaching staff certainly know how to develop.

Watching video of this kid you can tell he knows exactly what to do when he doesn’t have the ball. Thats one of the biggest traits you have to have to succeed in the NBA & what differentiates guys making the roster & the guys you see scoring points for fun in the G League. Once you try playing one of the big point scorers from the G League they aren’t used to not having the ball & are clueless on the court. I got schooled on that by a league scout I sat next to at Mad Ants game a few years ago & ever since I started paying attention it makes a lot of sense & you can see examples of it when teams call up their G Leaguers.

I can see him growing into the roll that Obi Toppin plays now for the Pacers. Excels in transition, and can space the floor with 3pt shooting. If he can offer defense + rebounding on top of that, he's sure to get played. Especially in 2-3 years as the younger guys Jarace + Mathurin need to step up, Furphy might be an important part of a finals run in the future.

Kid got heart, showed it at KU. Also a great team player. One year in G-league then should be on the full squad.

@@sports360media he will get a lot of minutes in the G League. Jarace Walker averaged 22, 6, 4 in the G League this year. They run the same schemes that the Pacers do on purpose. I doubt he gets anything beyond garbage time. Pacers will have almost the same rotation again next year.

@@xBulletproof1 I think rebounding is the key for Furphy to get into the lineup. Hopefully Oscar won't gobble up so many rebounds that Furphy won't have a chance prove himself to be a good rebounder.

I view Furthy's upside as similar to Zach Collins out of Gonzaga a few years ago. He went to the draft "early" instead of building his skillset in college, but hopefully Furthy realizes more of that upside than Collins has so far.

I don't know about steal of the draft or anything, I never get too high on second round picks period. That said, I love the fit in theory, but adjusting to the professional level that's never easy and it's going to take a long time.

For a team with playoff/'chip aspirations, he'll likely languish on the pine. Would've been better served to go back in the college oven another season.

Here’s a wild take: he’s a poor man’s PG …. Who could possibly be a better shooter but has to play “heavier” on defense (needs to be able to stand his ground with NNBA 3-4s)
