Me too. I’m so lost and it’s a shame I had never heard of STAX.
Easily one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen. Should be revered in music culture the same way we view Motown. I thought I knew the history but I had no idea, very well done.
Now here's a story LONG overdue!
Finally Memphis getting the positive attention it deserves! So many great things came from Memphis but the world has no idea

Then why was it racism that killed it from Atlantic, cbs, unified planters, and all the rest
Stax Records continues to strive against all odds.
Excellent documentary. Second time watching it on HBO 5/27/24. Knowing about the process at Motown and then watching this gives one insight in how both companies were able to successfully market the Black sound to different target audiences. Motown had a more crossover sound whereas Stax was more unapologetically Black. I'm proud of both.
If you haven’t watched this documentary, please do!!!!!! It’s worth watching
I love Motown but Stax was Soul music.
Loved the documentary. Heartbreaking. Thank you for telling their stories

Memphis, my hometown on full display. All of those artists lived walking distance from the recording studio along with so many more. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
People been middle fingers up since the 70's
The reason Stax failed was because they never learned from their mistakes. Jim Stewart struck a terrible deal in 1965 with Atlantic Records. Which eventually lost them their back catalogue and artists. They recovered and recovered strong. Then in 1972, Al Bell set up a distribution deal with Columbia Records for 15% of the profits of any music sold. Thats ridiculously low. Then 6 months later, the guy who set up the deal, Clive Davis at Columbia. He got fired for using company money to pay for his sons bar mitzvah!! When the new bosses at Columbia saw the amazing distribution deal Stax had, they wanted to renegotiate. Al Bell said no to renegotiating. So Columbia stopped distributing their singles and albums. So Stax made no money. 15% of nothing is still nothing.
I don't think I can handle this. Everything I watch the footage of Otis redding being pulled out of the ocean I feel faint and cry like I knew him. He died long before I was born but I've loved him since I was a shorty. I feel so sad because we'll never know what heights he would have reached. And I still say it was foul play. No coincidence that 2 of the 3 members of the black artist collective he and Sam Cooke started were viciously killed. Bobby Womack backed out and look, he lived a long life 😢
@alanwhite9389

Otis was a plane crash. Sam was an accidental killing. In no way related. I'm disappointed to to see someone slander those great artists with unfounded conspiracy theories they have no chance to refute.

HBO Max did a 3-hour Bee Gees documentary like 5 years ago. It’s still on Max.
Why do that always do that these days with the trailer and the music. It’s not a Christopher Nolan sci-Fi film…..what’s with the ridiculous attempt to build tension through remixing the music we’re quite obviously here to hear?! Made it sound like aliens were about to invade stax records to kidnap Mavis staples. Honestly, idiotic and completely put me off this documentary.

At the end of episode 2, Booker T Jones revealed himself as a racist coward for suggesting that his white STAX coworkers were at the time incapable of pain & sorrow after the MLK assassination took place at the very location (Lorraine Motel) where the STAX employees both white and black often socialized. Absolutely gutless for Booker T to let over 5 decades pass waiting on black bigotry to come en vogue before expressing his true hatred of his white STAX coworkers then and even more so now. So much for judging someone based on the content of their character. Pathetic.
No thanks, I don't watch black documentaries.
