Troyanos was a simply marvellous singer. She had a quiet intensity that enlarged the qualities of her voice, which was essentially 'soft-grained' as she called it, very different from the Italianate mezzo sound of the 50s and 60s. She remarked this was the only Verdi role she enjoyed 🤭

I saw Ms Troyanos in LA with NYCO as Octavian .I was 18 yrs old and an adoring fan. After her performance she went for a bite to eat in Music Center restaurant all alone at the counter in a full length leopard coat over her shoulders. I approached her and told her how much her performance meant to me. She was very sweet and thanked me. I remember this like it was yesterday.

The great, almost sui generis Tatiana, who could do seemingly anything - - or be anyone--with her chameleonic voice and commanding presence. It was astonishing to read of her stage fright, because she was such a magnificent stage creature, whose characters were drawn with such immense care and detail. She was certainly one of the greatest artists I ever saw, and I was very lucky to see her often, in a variety of roles. Never equaled, greatly missed.

Gone too early and suddenly--her death was a blow to the operatic world, particularly the MET-- with many songs waiting to be sung. A video of "O' Don Fatale" will compliment this performance. She attacks the aria with a searing determination, yet contrite and full of remorse and resolve to save Carlo, regardless of her own predicament. Her Eboli (Freni, I believe) steals the show.
