Statistics 101: Null and Alternative Hypotheses Example Problems

Statistics 101: Null and Alternative Hypotheses - Part 2.
In this video, we take the concepts from Part I of this video and then apply them to three real-world examples. We learn how to properly set up and then interpret null and alternative hypotheses. I also offer a few tips in the language of hypotheses interpretation which can make all the difference in the meaning. Enjoy!

I don't know how do KZreadrs get revenue from these ads work but I make sure to watch each and every ad completely as a token of appreciation for the wonderful work Brandon is doing for all of us.

Thanks! I appreciate that. The advertiser only pays KZread if certain amount of the ad is watched or it is clicked on. Then that revenue is split with the creator. It's what makes this all possible.

I am a 60+ y/o physician who has struggled with stats all my life. 2 years ago I had psychological testing done which showed that I have a severe math disability (no surprise to me :)]. Nevertheless I have over the course of my career tried to (on NUMEROUS) occasions review & study the areas of statistics pertinent to the understanding of medical literature, with varying degrees success. However, your video has gotten through to me, in 30 minutes, more understanding than has my studying of the past 30 years. I am a psychiatrist and I believe that, like psychiatry, one either has or does not have an innate talent; you obviously do. Thank you ever so much for sharing your gift. I would like to go through all your lectures "from beginning to end". Can you assist me in how I might organize such an endeavor? With much appreciation - Dr. Fox

I'm an applied learner when it comes to numbers but I still love them! Online grad learning doing my first inferential statistics class has been a challenge. I have to know WHY and HOW for it to sink in. Your explanations are exceptional in providing another point of view at learning. So many professors say..."well, this is what you read...there you go." honestly, without spelling it out in leyman's terms...it's quite difficult. You provide that bridge between the book and my brain. Thank you. I'll be following the other videos as well.

Thank you Brandon, I AM smart and talented, but was seriously starting to doubt it, during the past 5 weeks of stats study! Your teaching style is fabulous and you make the concepts so easy to understand. I do hope lecturers watch your videos as part of their ongoing personal learning and commitment to being a better teacher. I especially like that you use $50 words rather than $5,000 words ... A sign of a true teacher rather than an educator. I am of the firm belief that the vast majority of students only fail because their teacher has failed to teach well. Since watching your videos I have a stronger belief that I will be passing. Thank you again Best wishes Shelley

Excellent teaching style. The double negative ("fail to reject" the null) is challenging because you are taught to be unambiguous when writing business requirements statements which includes removing double negatives. This is particularly important to people where English isn't their first language as it is a tough concept to grasp so over time you do learn to shy from ever using them and now, we are using them. Grrrrrr :-)

Hello Salah! First thing to remember: the equal sign always goes with the null hypothesis H0. Second thing: hypothesis tests are not really about predictions. Either the null is supported (fail to reject) or it is not supported (reject). From what you wrote, it appears your null would be H0: greater than or equal to ___ and alternative H1 less than __. . If the test returns equal to or greater than, then you would fail to reject (support) the null H0.
