a lot of mysticism woven in this song, pertaining to the Kabbalah. "Station to Station" refers to the movement along the Tree of Life ("from Kether to Malkuth"... the highest and lowest points, respectively.)

Little known fact ... most of this album station to station and the album low ... were in fact written by bowie for the soundtrack to the movie the man who fell to earth .... as he thought he had been asked to write it ... they had in fact offered him the staring roll in the movie ... they never used the music for it ... when you watch the film knowing that you can hear where each song was supposed to go in the movie ...

From my favorite Bowie album, there's just not one filler cut in it. One amazing song after another. Bowie at his peak.

A friend of mine back in the day dragged me to the Midnight Special Taping in Hollywood. As we filed into the Studio This Song was Playing on a Mega Sound System. I could not believe my ears. All I wanted to do was listen to this song as it pounded at me. I am still talking about it. Gordon Lightfoot was featured on the Midnight special. If only it could have been Bowie. The name of the Album is Station to Station.

This was an awesome choice. This song is the title track for the album, and the opener. It's not a song that would be on the radio, and the version that was is literally the last 4 minutes. This song is spiritual. It's about "stations" in the body connecting the soul and mind and heart. The non-complicated meaning is getting from day to day. From station to station. Bowie was barely eating during this era because he was spending entire weeks in 1975 and 1976 doing coke and staying up through entire nights partying. The lineup for this album wasn't a very regular one. His backing vocalist Warren Peace had been on the 3 albums before, but everyone else was only previously on his last album Young Americans. 3 of those guys were on his next 4 albums, but he never kept a lineup for more than 3 albums. Another song that's also 3 songs in one but very different is Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise), which would make for a great reaction.

New to you guys. Great review, although I find it odd that not more people who dig great music have had so little exposure to Bowie's genius (totally subjective opinion, even though I'm right 🤣). Overall great album this song refers to kabbalistic themes that Bowie was exploring within his own personal identity & beliefs. As with a lot Bowie's work there are a lot themes and their interpretations are varied

Station to Station is the name of the album and it's one of his best album. At the time he recorded the album he was at his lowest point in his life only living on milk and cocaine which resulted in weighing about 90 pound. He was then only a shadow of himself. One of the songs on the album Word on a wing is his biggest cry for help. All of the 70s albums are some of the greatest work by a any artist regardless who they are. His golden period is Station to Station 76 to Scary Monsters 1980 he didnt do any wrong there. Best albums ever. His involvment in world of music is inmeasurable! Bowie triologi late 70s layed the groundwork for 80's pop while late 80's with band Tin machine layed the groundwork for 90s Grunge rock. First white dude on Soultrain and during the 70s he produced several classic albums for Iggy Pop and Lou Reed besides his own and you have probably one of the greatest musician ever.

Yes, first song on the album. I caught this tour in Detroit in '76.....wow is all I can say. Earl Slick on guitar (Stacey Heydon handling the tour guitar). The real "sleeper" on this album is "Stay".....it rocks!

this song was composed in a period when bowie was in his worse coke period. he nearly died during this period. search dick cavett bowie tv show on youtube to see how bad he was in this period health and coke wise.... yet, he was also doing some of his most creative work ever. bowie was at the closest edge of death in his life ever while recording here. the long intro is a window into his mindset. cold steel, kubrick like synth sound w/ killer bottom bass. mid 70s at its most nihilistic coked out sound scape you will find on vinyl in the decade.
