"STATIC SHOCK" Timeline - A "Big Bang" Theory!

"Static Shock" has perhaps the most perplexing timeline of any series in the DCAU...mostly because it was more focused on how best to incorporate Shaquille O'Neal than on which costume Batman's supposed to be wearing. Nevertheless...we may have cracked the code, yo.

Yeah, John likely wasn't keeping up with how old Virgil was, down to the month. He probably just saw him as a kid, and didn't know if he was 14, 15 or 16. And knowing how strict Virgil's dad was, it's possible that Virgil wasn't going to inherit the family car even until he turned 18.

I have two theories to offer up, on why the timeline around Dakota is so unstable. 1 - One is based on the show itself. Nina "Time-Zone" Crocker, scared of her abilities, went back and eliminated them. Except that beyond her own paradox, which is fairly small by time travel standards, there are two or three people who went back with her, and who remember what happened. This larger paradox, orbiting her more stable one, sent things into flux. Add on to this we likely do not know all the Bang Babies, including especially those emerging from the series' finale. Some of those may have time/space powers of their own, adding to the mix. 2 - The second is based on the comics, but 'could' tie in. The first time DC and Dakota properly crossed, it was the result of a mailman who lived somehow in both verses and eventually realized this, after some years of popping back and forth, not realizing he in essence never slept, because sleep shifted him to the other world where it was time to get up and go to work. Theory here goes, a man that tired was likely confused for years before the 'Worlds Collide' event. Say he gets up when its a holiday in both worlds, and is turned around. Seeking the places he knows, he somehow stumbles into the DCAU version of Dakota, very briefly, but on several spread-out occasions. Like the 'thinnies' of the Dark Tower novels (there is no movie), this transit left a temporal maelstrom, but not a reality-tearing one, just a mixing-up one. OT: If Richie got his Bang by helping Virgil on the night he was gassed, what happened to the older sister who likely cleaned those same clothes, as she's been known to complain.

  • @Wonder2win

Richie being around Virgil right after the big bang was a retcon to introduce Gear. In the first episode Virgil didn't tell Richie about his powers or the big bang until the next day. Sharon wasn't around Virgil's clothes fast enough or for a long enough time to be affected just like Richie wasn't. As for the timeline of course it doesn't make sense because Static Shock didn't take place in the DCAU until that was retconned to be the case just like with Richie.

  • @theleonpasta7336

@@Wonder2win I might be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure they explained that Richie got his powers due to being exposed to small amounts of the Big Bang chemicals for several months, not that he was with Virgil right after the Big Bang happened, maybe being around Static after he fought other bang babies further exposed him speeding up the process, either that or Richie was just conveniently near Virgil right after, and for some reason it took months to manifest.

@@theleonpasta7336 Virgil explicitly states he was with Richie right after the Big Bang. However, when we watch the 1st episode we see that wasn't the case and that Virgil told him the next day after he had gone home, changed his clothes, went to bed, and then woke up the next day.

Alas, I can admit that the Dark Tower movie still happens canonically, as per the rules of Multiverse Theory. 'Course, we can deem it as an alternate timeline... and in the meantime, the DCAU is grateful to not have done a bloody Arrowhead Project (from The Mist, to anyone curious). *Yet.*

They are any 4 'Top Guys' in the League at what ever 'Present' you're watching in... Maybe Virgil when Virgil said the car was supposed to be his next year he meant that was gonna be his 17th birthday gift. I think it’s not unreasonable for him to drive a year with his license before he got his own car. Also Green Lantern’s comments on Virgil’s age can be explained that he just means it’s been a long time since they saw each other and that static got really old.

Another good timeline video, but a confusing one too, which kinda does make sense because when Static Shock started, it didn't actually become part of the DCAU until the second season. For me I believe the start of the series and the big bang happened in 2000 just before the Start of Justice League from October to December 2000 and ends in early 2002, before the Justice League episode, "Starcrossed," which also takes place in early 2002. Also, I hope you go and save your chair. Lol. I also watched J's review of the whole Batman: The Animated Series and his videos are great.

Milestone and DC started as separate multiverses, but when DC purchased Milestone they established the existence of Earth-M as a place to stick Milestone continuity. In DC lore, these kind of metaphysical changes occur for all kinds of reasons ranging from Superboy punches to hypertime to the Orrery of Worlds. The simplest way to explain these discrepancies is that in the beginning, Static Shock _did_ occupy a different multiverse where DC was a comic book company and Superman's secret identity was universally known. Then, when Earth-M moved to the DC multiverse and several of its denizens made the jump to regular continuity, _reality itself_ changed -- retroactively. We know this is the most likely scenario because it's exactly what did, in our meatspace reality, actually happen. Static Shock himself is unaware of the changes to his reality, and since the Clark Kent dialogue was removed retroactively, no one remembers it ever having been said. Or if it was, then it was said on Earth-M, where presumably the original version of Static Shock still exists, but whose adventures we stopped following somewhere along the way.

With this in mind, one could even say that Static Shock did become part of the DCAU, albeit at the removal of the Teen Titans reality. Heck, one could even blame possible Flashpoint shenanigans for all this, which could explain the absence of the Barry Allen iteration of the Flash and his nemesis Reverse-Flash in the continuity.

Good thought. We may never know. It's easy to point to universe/multiverse-altering fan theories for reasons why these shows often contradict each other or don't make sense chronologically with each other in overlapping scenarios. But it's just as likely Darma had something to do with it as it is Chronos did, or Superboy punching the edge of the multiverse, or the Source Wall bursting open, or Paul Dini accidentally hitting the Return key too many times.

Here's my personal theoretical findings on this matter: 1 - I still think, at most, the production order is the best show chronology (yes, "Blast From the Past" should be set between the "A League of Their Own" two-parter, while "Trouble Squared" and "Consequences" should be part of Season 2)... extra emphasis on "at most", though, since the Batman crossovers "The Big Leagues" and "Hard as Nails" should still be deemed as the premieres for Seasons 2 and 3 respectively. 2 - Season 1 is basically set in its own universe. However, some offscreen Multiversal shenanigans (perhaps involving Reverse-Flash, a Barry Flash, and a Wally West Kid Flash, who then became the DCAU Flash after the heroic offscreen cosmic sacrifice of Barry) made sure of so many repercussions including the fact that the once-separate Static Shock universe became ultimately fused with the DCAU, thus leading to changes like the lack of Clark Kent mentions and comic books with Batman on them... and also the splitting of Teen Titans from the DCAU, now that I think about it. 3 - Season 2 should at the very least happen before the events of Justice League, yet must be set after the events of TNBA and S: TAS. 4 - One is better off watching Season 3 up to "Showtime" (again, production order rules follow) after finishing up with Season 1 of JL, but start watching "A League of Their Own: Part I" onwards after finishing up with JL's Season 2 premiere "Twilight"... hard to think Static Shock actually spoiled that key moment in DCAU history; with that in mind, I think Season 3 happens concurrently with the first missions of the Justice League. 5 - The Hoop Squad members may have joined up with the NBA at an earlier time than their real life counterparts. After all, they aren't exactly the same people as the ones we have. (Either way, am not exactly a fan of basketball, so this opinion may have faults, even if I have done my best.) 6 - Can agree with the "Y2K scare was soooooo last year" assumption too. 7 - As some people have already commented, not everyone gets to start legally driving at sweet 16, while I really, really doubt John Stewart ever asked Virgil Hawkins his age while doing heroics, nor did they have another encounter post-"Fallen Hero". Addendum: I'll check out J's Reviews' stuff someday. Heard they're also good, but their general length scares me a bit.

“Static Shock” wasn’t originally meant to be part of the DCAU, so Richie had a line about “even Clark Kent has a day job,” but once the show was grandfathered into the DCAU, this line was cut from the episode. So canonically, it never happened.

This is awesome! I didn't realize that it was impossible(?) to find that reference to Clark Kent and his day job. I really hope someone recorded that because it's an interesting piece of DCAU history. As for placing A League of Their Own post-JL's Twilight, between what episodes do you think it most makes sense? Not necessarily in between two specific episodes but what block of episodes would it best fit (i.e. somewhere between Twilight and say, Maid of Honor -- or between Twilight and A Better World, etc.) Also, is there any reference to suggest that he would have already met Superman or not by this episode? If not, do you think it makes sense for him to have already teamed up with both Bats and Supes before the JL?

  • @TheRealRobertBlarg

I think production order just has to be thrown out completely. It seems like even with it, they had no general chronology other than maybe having slowly age up throughout the show and that's it. Almost like they came up with an episode idea and then just put it wherever. I say throw out any reliance on production order for this series. I believe even the 90s X-Men cartoon's production order isn't chronologically accurate after the first couple seasons either. Hmmm... as for She-Back and Comfort and Joy -- I'll tentatively do this: * Twilight * Toys in the Hood * She-Back * A League of Their Own * Comfort and Joy There are other episodes/comics/whatever between these of course and if it works better to place Toys in the Hood AFTER League of their Own, that works too. This is mostly the order for these particular episodes that I think makes the most sense based on your notes. By the way, I'm that guy from reddit who was asking about Sin Tzu and Batman Adventures Vol. 2 so hey again. Be prepared to be annoyed by my constant "but wait GIVE ME MORE info" questions. You've been warned!

  • @dcauwatchtower

Agreed. It just depends on what you personally consider the most important reasons to move an episode, for your own purposes. Ours in this case are for the purpose of trying to keep production order as close as possible, while relying purely on in-universe time/date references. There’s no correct answer for this series, but it’s still great.

  • @TheRealRobertBlarg

    @TheRealRobertBlarg

    6 жыл бұрын

Sorry for the novel-length response! This was some of my logic when starting my personal chronology and I realize that ultimately, character design needs to be ignored and here's MY reasoning for that aspect haha. In Return of the Joker, we get a flashback to the last time they ever saw Joker alive. The designs are clearly TNBA, not Justice League, which doesn't make sense if it comes after (if we go by character designs) which it must since we see Joker go catatonic in the JL era meaning he has to wake up at SOME point for the ROTJ flashback. We also have Batman and Harley Quinn, love it or hate it, which is actually considered DCAU-canon by the creators (unlike Brainiac Attacks) and that is clearly set at least during JLU or after it based on the fact that the League exists and has a Booster Gold cameo. Yet... they're clearly the TNBA designs (albeit with a few tweaks like a short haircut+visible pupils for Nightwing or slightly altered gloves for Batman). Then even with Static, his crossover episodes with Batman both have TNBA designs even though one of them was made (or at least aired after) A League of Their Own. It gets even worse if you want to try to place the DCAU comics because some Batman Adventures comics, which were based on BTAS and thus use those designs) work better when placed later in the timeline such as the one with Superman which aside from a minor issue implying that Bruce and Lex are meeting for the first time, actually works well with World's Finest and the other crossover episodes because it's clear that Batman and Superman know each others' identities already and aren't meeting for the first time. But character designs make no sense since it predates STAS -- Luthor with a red toupee and Superman with a mullet??. But even ignoring the comics, character designs don't work. The only obvious time change you can pinpoint via character design is when BTAS became TNBA because it coincides with Nightwing and Tim Drake's introductions. After that though, it just doesn't mean anything anymore as evidenced by how even the DCAU ignores character design. So for me, it suddenly becomes one of two things: * Either the JL and TNBA/STAS designs are actually, canonically one and the same despite being different. Artistic license, let's say. * OR Batman keeps his old suit designs sometimes, for whatever reason, but we just never see them displayed (again, for whatever reason). I prefer the latter because it sort of works like the comics -- despite the comics featuring a set chronology and continuity (that gets rebooted every once in awhile), we see the characters return to older suit designs periodically (i.e. Superman just went back to the iconic red trunks, thank god, while Batman has a brand new design entirely). That said, I agree the beginning dialogue in League of Their Own seems like it would take place somewhat soon afterward... I just hate having the same villain so close to another episode usually. They could also just be doing some sort of routine inventorying...thing...? That way it could come later? HmmmMMMMMmmmm.

The majority of Static Shock takes place from 2001-2003 just by all the pop culture references I remember at that time like Beyonce, B2K, Lil' Romeo. And that the first season also takes place in the fall of 2001 a year after the shows orginal premier date. Which would make the NBA episode line up perfectly in real time. With that said Static should be 17 by the end of the last season...GL jokingly exaggerates his age, and that the time estimates of the future Jlu episode are just rounded off by the nearest milestone. Like it could be 47 years into the future, but in casual dialogue they can round it off to 50 which in this case is common...

Tbh, it was treated like a lower tier show which could explain why some of the events were out of place. These were the same writers that insisted an older Static be kidnapped by Kobra despite his younger self falling through a loophole sending him to the future and still have his older counterpart exist for some reason. As we’ve discussed before, Gear is in his second white suit in Future Shock, which would place it after Batman’s JL crossover in A League of Their Own because Gear is in his first green costume there. You either choose Batman’s costume being consistent or Gear’s, but you can’t have both. It’s unfortunate, but mostly explainable, as you’ll see in our Batsuit Conundrum video coming soon. P.S. The Batcave is something we’re looking into, too.

It is also interesting (though not necessarily right or wrong) that you wind up making SS take place over “extra years” by trying to keep everything in production order, yet you move episodes before or after their production order based solely on Batman’s costume or the Batcave’s look.

  • @dcauwatchtower

We’ve discussed in the past that you choose to go with Gear’s costume not being accurate because Batman is more important or means more to the universe, which is personal opinion. There’s no solid reasoning behind either choice. We don’t see eye to eye on this topic so it’s best left discontinued. Look out for the Batsuits video soon!

I'm over 40. That phrase has been around the block. When people wanted to be specific, they would use the actual year "That is so 2017". I've heard it used to mean up to 6 years in the past, mainly because people forget that decades like the 2000s and even the 90s were not just a couple of years ago. It might just be I'm not as hip as the yungin's of nowsville here in the Inter and nets, but I have "been there and done that". It's like saying "last time I saw you, you were too young to drive" and it actually meant the person was under 16. To us old people, the person they are referring to could have been 18 and just seemed young due to inexperience. And, yes both the free dictionary's idiom listing for this and a WordReference.com forum from 2008 back me up. I wasn't actually trying to debate you. I was just trying to just you a little bit more wiggle room in your theory craft.
