'State of Surveillance' with Edward Snowden and Shane Smith (VICE on HBO: Season 4, Episode 13)

Ойын-сауық

When NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked details of massive government surveillance programs in 2013, he ignited a raging debate over digital privacy and security. That debate came to a head this year, when Apple refused an FBI court order to access the iPhone of alleged San Bernardino Terrorist Syed Farook. Meanwhile, journalists and activists are under increasing attack from foreign agents. To find out the government's real capabilities, and whether any of us can truly protect our sensitive information, VICE founder Shane Smith heads to Moscow to meet the man who started the conversation, Edward Snowden.

    Snowden yeah, Assange can go fuck himself. Wikileaks contained dangerous information but Assange didn't care at all. On the other hand, Snowden knew he wasn't skilled enough to correctly assess the information he was reveilling and the consequences of said reveal, and so he handed everything to journalists, who on the contrary knew and know what they're doing. That's foundamentally different

    that is exactly what kills me , he risked is life and had to leave his family and everything and lives in secrecy , and most of the people i know who know about this and the state of surveillance , just have that 'Mehhhh as long as i don't use the dark web to buy drugs or make it to help me build bombs. I'm safe' TOTALLY MISSING THE POINT. Like how the NSA had a ready malware like Nitro Zeus ready to wipe out entire Grid network , comms channels , power facilites etc of a country and invade it at will , making any country look like sitting ducks to be shot at. Same goes for all data that can be monitored can also be stolen by a third party for malicious activity. In india for example , the UIDAI (Unique identification authority of india) something like the social security number , holding data like thumb print , bio metric , face scan , signature , address etc was leaked and is still available online for sale at a mere 7 dollars. Entire nation's citizen critical data was sold and is still available online for a mere 7 dollars! And no one gave a single fc# , just a day of news (exactly a single day) , and then vanished. Govt was like 'Mehh shit happens...' , Really couldn't understand how a nation full of engineers and doctors who are exported globally and well educated , took it sooooo casually. Extreemly felt bad for snowden . All the sacrifice done in vague for the majority nut megs that live in the world , and love and encourage oppression and be oppressed knowingly / unknowingly .

    I'll paraphrase; Snowden: The Whitehouse appointed two independent commissions...to review mass surveillance programs...they looked at the evidence and found that despite this going on since 2001 (mass surveillance) IT HAD NEVER STOPPED A SINGLE TERRORIST ATTACK IN THE UNITED STATES. Smith: That's a huge point!... So two independent commissions from the Whitehouse came to the conclusion that Mass surveillance does not work. Snowden the goes on to explain that the reason they keep mass surveillance is because they know that if they stop and there is a terrorist attack - which they know is inevidable - then their political opponents will blame them for it for political mileage because politics in this age is completely fear-based.

    The exact quote is as follows: "those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." circa 1763. It was written on behalf of the Pennsylvania General Assembly, regarding a tax dispute between the Pennsylvania General Assembly and the family of the Penns, the proprietary family of the Pennsylvania colony who ruled it from afar. And the legislature was trying to tax the Penn family lands to pay for frontier defense during the French and Indian War. And the Penn family kept instructing the governor to veto. Franklin felt that this was a great affront to the ability of the legislature to govern. And so he actually meant purchase a little temporary safety very literally. The Penn family was trying to give a lump sum of money in exchange for the General Assembly's acknowledging that it did not have the authority to tax it.

    Snowden is an American HERO, and we are COWARDS for letting our govt officials get away with this! Our constitution is not a list of suggestions. It is an inviolable set of regulations, the supreme law of the land, directing how our government shall be run. Anything at variance with our constitution is NOT A LAW. I have always been a big Obama supporter, but I cannot wrap my head around his support of this shit. It broke my heart when he defended it. The constitution is more important than anyone's administration! And Obama was already a lame duck when this broke! He re-ignited my faith in the American system of government, and then he took a big fat dump on it. Thanks.

    War Don I don't understand your meaning. We the people are our own government, and we have allowed this to happen. We have allowed a lot of things to happen, much to our shame. That is why I say we are cowards for allowing this. I really thought President Obama was going to bring accountability back to the presidency - that he would hold himself accountable to us, as it should be. But it should be so because we demand it, not because he promises it. We failed. Again. Do we deserve this democracy anymore? Given the candidates running in our next presidential election, I don't think things are going to get better any time soon.

  • @maxcurrent485

    @maxcurrent485

    I remember when Obama was making promises about doing things like ending the Patriot Act and a friend acted like if you vote for him he's going to "fight the man". I was telling him that Obama has a Harvard law degree. He knew the Patriot Act was seditious and unconstitutional when he voted for it. He's 100% for globalist police state tyranny. Some folks rely on emotion rather than logic to pick who to vote for so they'll never listen to the logic. This is why they make appeals to emotion and how upset you are about policies, without ever telling you of a better one, or demonstrating the will to actually change things. It's sad that you fell for the rhetoric, but it's encouraging that you didn't just nod in agreement when he said this is okay and "You have to trust your government". Maybe you understand now that the left and right are just different boots on the same thug and will stop supporting the beast. Unfortunately third parties can be just as complicit so we really need an overhaul of the system and new ideas.

    Is it possible that Obama is a puppet?

  • @beenaplumber8379

    @beenaplumber8379

    7 жыл бұрын

    Auntie Robyn Who's puppet? He seems to be the puppet master to me, if anything. But I suppose anything's possible. Bob Bobage It is horribly painful for me to face the fact that emotion did play into my decision to vote for Obama for his second term. I pride myself as a thoughtful man, and I try hard to think critically about what our candidates say. I take my responsibility as a voter very seriously. And he didn't say we had to trust our government. He told us we need to participate in our government. Well, I still think he was the better candidate from the major parties, but my emotionality at that point is what told me he was still different when his first term wasn't exactly what he'd promised. He'd spent a lot of time not fulfilling his promises - not until election season came around. I'm sure he didn't start this domestic surveillance, but instead of being the president who did a lot of things that I wanted our president to do (and he did), I will always remember him as the president who actually defended that domestic surveillance. That was a severe violation of my trust and our freedom. I can't get past that. I can't forgive that. Why did I think he would be different? That's a disturbing question at a personal level, because I can't answer it. I don't know what it was about him that made me trust him, and that disturbs me. It's obvious that Hillary won't be any different from any other president we've ever had, and IMO Trump would be a fresh face, but a serious danger to world peace and stability, let alone domestic tranquillity. Do I vote for the one I don't really trust, or do I vote for the megalomaniac who might nuke the first country that challenges his greatness? I can trust Trump. He is very predictable and very simple. I can trust him to make a disaster of things. I can't think of any 3rd party candidates whom I would trust either. Most of them seem to know a lot about one issue, or a small set of issues, and they lack the organization to competently run an administration. I hate this election year. I first voted in 1984, and this is by far the worst choice of candidates I have ever seen. I hope in 2020 we can flush them all away and start over. But we all still need to vote. Important house and senate seats are up for grabs, and in my district the candidates for those seats are a LOT better than the presidential candidates.

    Yeah, he's a hero for the young, uneducated, unruly delinquents around the world. Snowden is now working for the Russian Intelligence to pay for Russian government securities protecting him 24/7, accommodation, visa etc. And probably is finishing his high-school diploma since he dropped out of high-school as he's admitted many times himself.

    *Russian Jarhead* LOL... do you know that Snowden dropped out of high-school? Did you know that he knows nothing about computer programming or hacking? Oh, I guess you learned about him through the movie and social media? It's mostly fictitious. He was an IT help desk at NSA, that's how he stole the information and leaked it. The things that you see him here disconnecting integrated camera of a phone are kids stuff...lol. Most high school kids know this stuff. It's a know brainer. If you don't believe me look it up. I knew he was fake because he always dodged the more technical questions.
