    You could argue that the Burbank card show over the last couple years, could be considered THE National Sports CARD Collectors Convention. If they continue to grow at this rate, I can see this becoming the premier card collector show in the country (if they're not already). The National could be billed as The National East, and Burbank as The National West. Rob has done an incredible job with the show and I think it's fair to say that his show could be considered this. I go to shows and find myself buried in front of dollar bins for hours. Like Rob says, it is totally 💯 a hobby. Folks like Rob are all around the country and I'm grateful for that....this is how I returned back into the hobby after 20+ years.

    Kudos to you, Geoff, for giving Rob V a platform for his vision. I'm confident he executed it successfully at this bash; I attended Thursday night and Friday and it was spacious, very well-lit, and the a/c plentiful! Very much worth the drive from northern cal and very pleased to have such a large-scale show on the west coast. This hobby has something for everyone; I completely agree with Rob that the flippers and slab suitcase bois should not be the face of this hobby because that model is unsustainable long-term and they will be on to the next shiny new thing (crypto, nfts, comix, whatever) and guys like me will still enjoy finding 5.00 cards in the 1.00 boxes.

    I set up at this Burbank show. Table was 600, hotel was over 700. Food was also super expensive, I guess because of Disneyland. I operated at a loss for this show. Not only that, Hilton had strikers making super load noise each morning. So I slept like 3 hours a night. The strikers started at 5:45 am on Friday, 6:00 am on Saturday and 2:45 am on Sunday!!! Nobody disclosed the strikers. Trying to get a refund from the Marriott for not disclosing. I did have tons of fun at the show for sure. Just needed to make more money…

    Hotel sounds normal, maybe they could have a cut rate for people who do buy a table but that would have to be paid by the show owner... again food is expensive everywhere at every event... and $600 for a table for 3 days seems very reasonable.... maybe ask yourself if you were selling the right type of cards and at the right price points.... it's very competitive I think many popular cards at shows like this need to drop to sell... or be willing to make deals... and reputation means a lot

  • @simepoh

    @simepoh

    Agreed. Too big/expensive and not enough people for dealers. Anehiem is a tough market. Hard to imagine they will be coming back there. Ontario is a better venue with more affordable lodging/accessibility. We gotta remember the majority of these 'dealers' are more flea market dealers and the cost of show means a lot. Higher overhead means the BUYERS are less likely to get the killer deals. Trickling down to the people not buying. Kudos to Burbank for leading the charge tho. It's just a tough market in OC. Like Vegas too many other things to do and everything seems overpriced including the cards.. collectors know the better deals are in the Midwest for like 70 percent or less of what you find on the east west coast shows.

    I think the whole rip to flip is going to fade out soon. The whole breaker thing is kool if you are a fan. I haven’t been since it started , I would rather invest that $120+ spot money into a PSA 9,10 of a nice P.C player all day. People need to sit back not just throw thousands out to try and hit a huge player it’s basically a lottery ticket at that time. Do your research, take your time, and “most importantly” have fun collecting.✌🏻

    @@BostonSportsFan33 I hate the breaking scene and think its dumb honestly. Never bought into one and i never will. Iv been collecting cards for 23 years since pokemon launched and I dabbled in magic along with some misc sports as a kid. Im age 34 now and got in as a 10 year old end of junk wax era , my best moments are ripping full boxes knowing im gunna for sure get some sort of decent hit . Times have now changed and the hobby is printed to the moon with it being more like a flashy casino now which is making this whole breaking thing popular . Its just gambling and a dopamine hit for people. Id rather the product have stayed cheaper and breaking be banned . I still buy some product but definitely have got more into selling and buying singles because its so damn expensive to rip boxes . The card hobby is stuck between being a casino and a stock market at the moment , with collecting getting fazed out.

    Nice interview. Question - for someone from overseas, what did Rob meant about the union / nickle & dimes issue?

  • @Showcardsusa

    @Showcardsusa

    10 ай бұрын

    Unions here at places like large hotels, convention centers etc have established rules such as: only union members can bring the booth setup stuff that each dealer needs to the showroom floor. In other words, the union charges to bring your stuff to your booth, and it’s not going to your booth unless you pay them. This guarantees that union members get the work, and you can’t source it elsewhere. Rob, it appears, did not want his dealers and other vendors to feel that feeling of being hit up to do things that cost more money, so he paid the union a lump sum to not nickel and dime each vendor, rather, just do the job and not mention anything to the vendor

    He hit the nail on the head with the problems in the hobby. The breaking is a gambling mess. And social media and the grading push has made a mess of things. I logged off social media it was too toxic and too much drama. The hobby shouldn't be about that. If you want to have a lot of fun collecting cards stay off social media. And yes if you want to grow the hobby, the high prices will scare the newbies away quickly I don't blame them. Most of these expensive cards are probably only going to go down a lot overtime anyway.

    Love you both but the cost doesn’t make sense for dealers. Without dealers there is no show. Rob’s bias is disconcerting. Sure it’s a hobby but you’re (burbank) one of the biggest businesses in the hobby. The hobby can’t function without business. And lastly, the hobby wouldn’t be what it is without breaking. You can deny it all you want. Breaking revolutionized the hobby. Refusing to acknowledge it won’t help your business. Your sentiment towards breaking won’t help the hobby. Especially, coming from someone of your status.
