DlchMcV Exactly so. French was, so they said, The civilised language. Certainly retired diplomats I know that served in the forties and fifties said it was more or less essential, because anyone who was anyone spoke French. I think English became the international language, Funnily enough, when the EU started expanding, and some of the new languages were tricky. And of course, in Finance. I keep my self busy now with publishing interests in Frankfurt, Berlin and Weimar, and have to practically force colleagues to speak German. I prepare all my board papers in German and they all insist we work in English. Doesn't help my German of course. Thinking about it, the only place I had to use French was when serving in Ottawa.

Belgium has three official languages: French, Dutch and German. QMII speaks both French and German, but she doesn't speak Dutch. To avoid any political embarassment, she had to use a "neutral" language then. English was the natural choice, as both Philippe and Mathilde also speak it (unlike Danish, for example,).

Margrethe is known to many Royal Families of Europe as "Daisy",because she is descended from Princess Margaret of Connaught,Queen Victoria's Grand Daughter.Daisy (it seems) is a diminutive of Margaret.
@BucyKalman
7 жыл бұрын
+Paradox The name of the flower 'daisy" is "marguerite" in French and 'margarita' in Spanish. However, "Marguerite" and "Margarita" are also given names , whose equivalent form is "Margaret" in English and "Margrethe" in Danish. That is why "Daisy" is a synonim for "Margaret" in English.

I noticed it too. That was weird ! In fact, I had the impression that Philippe and Mathilde seemed overwhelmed by the formality of the Danish court, or perhaps intimidated by Queen Margrethe's seniority. They looked so shy and deferential in the entrance procession that it was almost cute.
@fishflavoredicecream

lol that could be. Although his face was so intense especially at 1:50 that my theory went along the lines of Margrethe grabbing the wrong piece of paper and she just winged it from then on, while he looks on confused and amazed. But that may be a bit far fetched. Nevertheless, that still doesn't explain why Phillipe's face looked like somebody just slapped him out of nowhere.

Hello Rita
It's just so beautiful
She is beautiful, warm & gracious. My 22ed cousin.
I am given to understand that when members of royalty from 2 separate countries meet, they converse in English--common 2nd language to both.
H.M a truly devoted monark and an artist painter, love queen Margarethe, blessings from USA.
From the US....very excited that Katherine is visiting your vibrant Queen Margrethe II and Princess Mary. I see this as a welcome highpoint for the two monarchs and the broader EU.
Me encanta esa majestuosidad
This gathering area doesn't look very grand?..

Hello 👋
She is so precious to Denmark and loved by all
Margarethe is very popular ,so is Mathilde...beautifull queens!
God save the Queen and King !
She spoke in English not French .She also had a lapsus, when she mentioned Queen Astrid, who was his grandmother . Paola was his mother . But then aging ;one has excuses .We have the same Age Margareth and I. Assomment state dinners. My bed welcomes me at 9 pm every evening .good music a peace. After a very busy life.

She referred to Queen Astrid as Philippe's grandmother and her mother's cousin. There is no lapse then.
Stunning .
Increíble que aún, existan reyes, reinas, principes 😁

Never knew this delightful pronunciation of Tintin!
There is great style in Royal attire here. Seems The Danes are great at fashion
Having diplomatic ties since 1837, shows loyalty on the part of the Belgians and the Danes. Ma'am you referred to "meaningless loss of life in another connection but that's exactly what, in my opinion, these Covid-19 deaths are.
Superbe.
1:30 who is the officer standing behind King Philippe? Is he in the Danish Royal Life Guards?
Just curious: why is the speech in English?
@BucyKalman

Amen!
Grazie della visione
La Reine Mathilde est superbe...
Great Queen
God those diamonds!

Me encanta cómo dice la Reina: "Your Majesty King Phillipe, Your Majestiy Queen Mathilde..., Monché cusá, maché Cusí, it is indiiiiiid" Hahahahaha!

I suppose Philippe is just shy and somewhat umcomfortable in formal occasions like that. His speech to Queen Margrethe , which can be seen in another video, was very warm though.

Why did Queen Margaret, fluent in French, not deliver her welcome speech in French to the King and Queen of Belgium?
Супер
At about 1:50 King Philippe has the most shocked expression. "King? Of Belgium? Seriously? King of BELGIUM? Really? Well, I suppose that explains all the sashes, but someone should have mentioned this before dinner. Did you guys realize I'm the KING...of BELGIUM? Goodness me!"
@ladydamiana6841

That's because the proper form of reference to him is "King of the Belgians," not "King of Belgium"-----just as the Greek rulers were Kings "of the Hellenes" and not "of Greece."
I wonder if they ever spill gravy on themselves. I do.
Very Charmous! ,An beautiful discurse! God Save the Monarquia and yours Childrens😂😂🥰

Margrethe is known to many Royal Families of Europe as "Daisy",because she is descended from Princess Margaret of Connaught,Queen Victoria's Grand Daughter.Daisy (it seems) is a diminutive of Margaret.
@BucyKalman

Not even monarchs wear crowns nowadays (except the British monarch on the day of his/her coronation and at state openings of the UK parliament). If, however, you would like to wear a tiara (or diadem), they are quite easy to find in auctions as long as you can afford them.

Why was Philippe so shocked when Margrethe started her speech? What the hell happened?
@BucyKalman

@fishflavoredicecream

lol that could be.

Good! I never heard the queen of England speaking French or something else but only English. I enjoy listening to the Danish and Swedish and Belgian speaking various languages no matter the accent. English people often criticize people who have an inflection in English while they can only speak English.

Why are the regnal sashes strung differently for the Danish royals and the Belgian royals?
@BucyKalman
2 жыл бұрын
The Belgian royal couple is wearing the sash of the Danish order of the Elephant, which is worn over the left shoulder. The Danish royals on the other are wearing sashes of Belgian orders (the order of Leopold for Queen Margrethe and CP Frederik, the order of the Crown for CP Mary and Prince Joachim, and the order of Leopold II for Princess Marie). The sashes of all Belgian orders are worn over the right shoulder.

Queen Mathilde has quite a tic going on. I’ve seen that exact tic in members of my own family. It really amps up when she is listening to someone. She has to lightly press her lips together every few seconds. I hope it’s just a thing and not the start of something more. She’s so young, even for a tic like that. Maybe it was something she picked up as a speech therapist.

+ Udo: probably because Belgium has 3 different official languages (French, Dutch and German). If Queen Margrethe spoke in French , that could be seen as offensive to the Dutch-speaking Flemish community of Belgium. English is a neutral choice that everyone can understand.
