I always giggle when people think equity at startups always translates to millions of dollars in your bank account, that startup compensation is always terrible, and that working at a startup means you’re destined to be either affluent or destitute (no middle ground of course). In truth, startup employee compensation is more complex than the misnomers many have.     Make sure the start up is viable. That’s probably the most important thing. I’ve been in the start up world for a few years and made some bad decisions based on products that we’re not ready for market or would never be commercially viable. That’s the key. I know you went over this but I’ve lived it the last three years and I’m just now getting to a place where I’m either going to stay at the start up culture or give in and go to a big corporate culture.

    Great video! I’m starting at a company soon - Series C extension last year, currently going through 409A and Series D coming. What % would you recommend I allocate to equity? There are no restrictions on %.

    I want to make a strategic choice, rather than based on how comfortable i am with the salary because I’m quite comfortable financially at the moment

    Startups have a new 409A valuation each fiscal year. Equity percentages vary depending on your role, level, etc. Angel List has a decent high level overview on average equity grants; you can also look at open jobs and filter by series to see what other companies are offering in terms of equity ranges (just know some list wide ranges to get interest but the only give the smallest percentages). If you have friends in your profession who are at startups as well, ask them what percentage equity they received; if you have relationships with any VCs, they generally have info they share with the founders.

    @@JenniferBrick so the company gives employees to decide on the %. So if the salary is 100k for example, i can allocated 10%, 20%, 30% or whatever % i want of that salary to equity. I don’t have access to their financial statements and i can’t decide on what to do!
