If you're going to keep the car for a long time I would use stainless sheet instead of mild steel, you're wire will still weld it as long as one but up is still mild steel so no need to use stainless wire, the positive of stainless is it will never ever rust. One little tip for you after you have given me so many over the years.
Nice welder I had a Esab but have since moved to Lincoln. Good luck on your restoration!
If you havn't already used, Iwould recommend weld primer. This is a primer wich won't burn if you weld your patches but it will melt and protect the spots.

I actually have some Zinc rich primer. Thanks though
We gonna have to start calling Gunnie The Weldman instead of the Gunman 😳 The patch came out great Gunnie 👍
I USE TO use old hoods for patches but now buy .22 gage galvanized steel any patches last a lifetime
Very good progress!
Restoration is king in bodywork. Good stuff!
If you have some holes from welding my coworker uses tin metal wire and a smal torch to fill them up . I am by no means a panel beater but it seams to work pretty good
Very cool car mate iv been welding for around twenty years but like you I'm not an expert every day is a school day as they say but the only tips I'd give you is 0.6 welding wire seams to work best on car body work and make sure uv got a good earth and it's a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher close by because it's impossible to keep an eye on sparks when you are welding it just takes one spark to start a fire and it's best not to weld late at night because a spark could be somewhere you can't see it as iv learned from experience so stay safe mate and keep up the good work 👍
Hey Gunny you are making good progress on your car mate, the patch you fitted in the front wing looks great. If you are trying to weld up small holes in a panel and you have access to the back of the panel get a copper block about 5-6mm thick and fix it behind the hole, it will help disperse the heat and also stop you blowing through the panel as you can't mig weld copper, you can buy those copper plates just for this job as they have magnets set into the plate so they fix to the panel👍 You have a good welder there Gunny it's made by Esab which is one of the best makes out there, I have a Esab Rebel which is computerised and learns your welding style and adjusts it settings to suit, good luck mate👏🙏👍John UK.
Gunny, would really like to see some of the fit up and welding of the patch panels and how you do it. Thanks, Mate!
Great work gunny, that new welder will do the job perfectly. Just stick to stich welding on the larger weld sections and it will be less likely to warp the panels. Really enjoying this resto series mate, keep em coming Cheers Andy
The rust was never real friendly to our old Aussie beasts! Nice work bringing it back to life Gunny!
wrong wire Gunny .6 wire better choice for body steel,. 6 will take less power to melt because it's smaller. my first welder was a EASB back in 1983
I welded in some front floors for my late Dad's 72 Jeep back in the late 80's, I started to restore the Jeep a couple of years ago and was pleasantly surprised the floors were still in great condition. If you can, try and have rounded corners on your patches and they won't burn through so easily.

Yeah I too came to suggest rounding the corners - even just use a drill first - the corners cop a lot of heat and have a tendency to sink
Gunny, metal sticking(glue goes off really quick), my day has just improved by an order of magnitude. 👍💪👋👊🔥
Hey mate just curious of the background story of your torana? How long have you had it? And your patch panel come up well. I’m restoring a 1971 HG Holden kings wood station wagon. Learning more as I go. I have some welding knowlage but making the patch panels is what I’m mainly learning and as for spray painting I have not much of an idea. I have sprayed polyethylene a long time ago ( spraying kitchen doors and panels ) but since then nothing from a gun and compressor. I love your Chanel and I am learning as I go.
Take a look a Fitzee fabrication here on KZread. He does a technique called cut and butt. He basically overlays the metal tacks it then cuts out the old. I watched him to learn how to replace panels.
I found from experience with newer Japanese cars...Use a cutting wheel to grind the tops of your welds instead of flap wheel or grinder. Cutting wheel will only touch the weld tops and wont heat and shrink the metal like flap wheel or grinder.
Nice welder! I had an old Cig Transmig 135 that I just recently retired for a more modern and beefier Unimig Viper 182 MK2. Cant go wrong with the Cigweld, nice one! Enjoy "welding some shit"
Hey gunny I personally use .6 wire that way you don’t need as much heat 😉
Love your content, just asking as I'm looking at purchasing a hush 100 air compressor, what's a good LVLP gun for base and clear 2 pak what tip and air nozzle, l know your very busy but would love your advice.

@@TheGunmanChannel Thankyou very much, keep up the great content, it's awesome.
If no one has told you yet. Use an aluminum het sink behind your welds. Your doing great so far.
Been a subscriber since b4 u did your falcon. I recon u should take a look at Fitzees Fabrications he has some really good videos on cutting in and making window panels into rusty cars, also taught by a welder to use canola oil spray as spatter spray a lot cheaper, homebrand woollies or coles. Cheers
Nothing worse when you forget to turn the gas on when your tig welding and you wonder why your tungsten has disappeared haha
Hellow gunman
Buddy dont forget to turn the gass off after welding it gets expensive when you forget lol.
Alrite gunnie
Hey gunny really impressed with the welding it did look good and I am looking forward to see how this car turns out once you get a feel of the welding it will be a breeze through good luck and cheers man
How much fun is welding! Good stuff gunnie
Awesome video Gunny, I like the way you take us through every step. I was actually able to get 100% argon from my local Bunnings

It's all I had and better than on the tyre lol. Being a hard plastic sparks just bounced off and didn't stick. It worked
Hello gun man shame you cannot chatt to you in person I see a fue problems with your setup
When I watched this movie, a time came to my mind 15 years ago when I was doing an old Jaguar in the workshop at night. My children were small and wanted to play with me, and I did not have time for them. And I lost that time, today the children are big and they are not at home. Don't make that mistake.

You should find the one spot on this car that doesn't have rust. Cut it out and then weld a fully restored Torana to it. It would be much quicker.
