Starting problem with new Ryobi 4000 watt inverter generator from home depot

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Bought a new Ryobi 4000 watt inverter generator from home depot before hurricane sally hit Pensacola Florida. The generator simply would not start it of the box. After hrs of trouble shooting I figured out the carbon monoxide detector was defective and unplugged it. After doing so it ran fine. Other than the defective sensor I'm very happy with the fule economy and soud level for the price of the generator.

Do we just leave the sensor off while it’s running? I see it frowned upon in the owners manual.

Same with me. Bought mine a while ago and wanted to get it running. Pulled a few times and nothing. Found this video. Disconnected the CO2 sensor and it fired right up. Very easy to disconnect, just had to snip the zip tie and disconnect the plug.

Same here in Oct 2022 so apparently QA procedures haven't improved at Ryobi. Hopefully, they'll send me a new sensor- this is a good safety feature but in my case not one worth returning a 100 lb generator- if the store would even accept it (I ordered from the Home Depot website.)

Important to note here the importance of adding and checking the oil correctly. On this model you remove the oil dipstick cap, wipe, and reinsert, but DO NOT thread in. The oil should reach the upper level mark, essentially the level should be at the last threads on the engine case. If you check the oil incorrectly by threading the dipstick back in, you will get an incorrect reading and think you’re okay, but actually be low on oil. If the engine oil is allowed to reach the lower limit on the stick (when checked incorrectly), this engine will not start, or will start and shut off, because of the low oil sensor cut off feature. I got one of these brand new for free from the curb because it wouldn’t start, all because it was low on oil when checked correctly. Checked wrongly by threading the stick in, it was right at the lower mark, but checked correctly, it would not show on the stick at all. Judging by all the forum posts on this model about starting and then shutting off, there are.a lot of people making this mistake.

Thank you for the very helpful video that enabled me to get working my new generator with same problem. Home Depot sent me an email asking for a review. A few minutes ago I replied with the following: "Brand new it didn't start. While waiting for it to be delivered went on-line and read the manual. Trouble shooting section wasn't helpful. Went on-line and found a KZread video where new owner Taylor Fenoglio with the same make and model had same problem. He fixed his by unplugging the CO sensor. Saw several comments where owners fixed theirs the same way. After doing it too, mine started right up. Apparently, a defective CO sensor on brand new generators of that make and model is common. Home Depot is an authorized Ryobi service and repair center. Why is Home Depot selling and Ryobi shipping generators with defective CO sensors? Two weeks after delivery there was a power outage during which my new generator was an 85 lb paperweight. I can't take it to Home Depot to be repaired. It won't fit in my Honda Accord. And even if I had a vehicle that it could fit, I can't lift something that heavy. I'm 80 years old and have had spinal injections for pain. If Home Depot shipped me a CO sensor that wasn't defective, I could install it."

The reason it kept shutting off is because you probably didn’t fill and check the level of the oil correctly. On this model, when the oil level is right, it will be up in the oil filler neck at the last thread. You check it by removing the stick, cleaning, and just placing it back in the hole, do not thread it in! The oil should read right at the very TOP of the stick, not the last 1/8 inch at the bottom. Even when checked as I described above, if you let it get down to the very bottom of the stick where it barely shows, you’ll have starting and running issues. As soon as the engine crank starts falling oil around, and it’s already low, that sensor may cut the engine off.

Ya check two main things. 1. Check to make sure your oil is full because there is a shutoff that will keep it from running if not. 2. Unplug the sensor like I did. It's that wire I showed with the connection. It just unclips and it should just Crank right up. As far as out in the rain I'm not sure.

But all the generators with good efficiency had a ton of gizmos and gadgets, and $800+ price tag. And as you may know, the risk of failure increases with more electrical gizmos.

It's much quieter than a traditional generator but definitely louder than a typical inverter generator. It's kind of a cross over between the two. It produces the clean power and gas efficiency of an inverter generator but at the price of a typical generator. A quiet inverter generator similar of power cost well over $1k this is about $400
