Starting Hydroponic Tomatoes in the Dutch Bucket System

We started the hydroponic tomatoes in the dutch bucket system. They took about a month to be big enough. We have another batch that should be ready to go in the buckets in a few weeks. These were planted in a perlite/vermiculite growing medium and they get vine crop nutrients. After the tomatoes, I did a little walk around the greenhouse and showed a couple things. There is a quick time lapse of the green beans. Then we watched Dad move some wood, checked on the desktop NFT system, and I ended with some good news on the old John Deere snowmobile. Stay tuned for more tomatoes videos as they grow. They need a lot of care, but they are a good crop. Thanks for watching!

I did ask her if we could try that awhile back and we agreed to try it in the high tunnel very soon this spring, rather than in the main greenhouse. We will have more tomatoes out there, and I will be able to compare the growth. We are planning on grape tomatoes, cherry and san marzano so far. I'm looking forward to the experiment because I know you have really good results with yours. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    Hello! I was wondering why you chose to do the layering of substrates in your Dutch buckets? I work at Hudson Farm Club, and we have had clogging issues with using just the perlite so I am wondering if this will help decrease that. I also noticed you didn't strain out the dust from the perlite and vermiculite. Has that caused any issues in your system? Thanks!

  • @HomegrownPassion

    @HomegrownPassion

    3 жыл бұрын

    We find it helps with water retention...perolite does not hold any water...we don't have issues with clogging....never have...the bato bucket has a u drain in the bottom that prevents the medium from gong into the drain system. Same on dust never had a problem... hope that answers your question.

    Have you tried hydroten rocks in those systems? I use them in my cannabis system. Don’t know how they would work with your system? Would save money on buying new soil or whatever your using every time. Just a pain cleaning the rocks every time.

    I've seen them, and know a lot of smaller growers like them. We've never used them, but I bet they'd work well with the plants we usually put in the grow bags, like broccoli. How do you clean them? I do like how they can be reused.

    Thats what I was gonna ask. I use hydroten rocks. The most important part is the quality of the seeds and hydroponics nutrition. What kind of nutrition do you use? What mixes?

    @@oguzoguz4686 if you are talking to me I use house and garden Aqua flakes. It’s a two part a and b. Really good for hydro. Then I use a little bit of advance nutrients. Like Sensizym, and big bud. Then I use Botanicare cal mag. Most major nutrient companies work all the Same. Like you said doesn’t matter how good your grow setup is or how good you grow or the nutrients you use if you don’t start off with good genetics.

    @@byronrobinson8633 Thanks for the input. Right now I am using maxigro on lettuce basil and spinac. This is my first time. Once I am doing good. I want to work on tomatoes. I guess on tomatoes I can not use maxigro. Herbs and tomatoes are different solutions. Am I correct?

    @@oguzoguz4686 I’m not 100 percent sure because I don’t grow herbs but I don’t see why you can’t use the same nutrients, you would just mix up different ratios. I would think tomato’s would take stronger mixes then herbs. That question would be better for this families channel as that is their profession. Mine is cannabis. Good luck. It’s so fun and rewarding growing your own.

    I also tried some experiments with indoor hydroponics lettuces and different LED lights. The results were similar with the leaves not very bunches. I think the light sources needs to be stronger to induce the tight bunched lettuce but that gets expensive as wattage increase. In my expereince, the lettuce taste was a little bit off. I think I left the lettuce growing too long and it bolted. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYJ-x8-ndNiqZ9Y.html

    yes lettuce gets bitter before bolting. you are right very hard to get head lettuce to grow if not enough light. We only grow head type lettuces in the spring-summer. Leaf lettuce all other times.

    1:12 you should start doing links with pricing in your description... We all know prices change and different areas of the USA' and Canada.... prices R different... jus sayin "Just DO It!!! An I think we pay... and then circle back like the Biden Press girl... but don't circle back too many times or you will run into yourself.. Because I think she has a concussion now
