Starting Glads and Dahlias without soil

It sounds crazy but it's true. You can start your dahlia tubers and gladiolus corms without soil indoors 4-6 weeks before it's time to set them outdoors. Here's how.
This trick is especially good for those of us who garden in a cold climate with a short growing season--like I do in my zone 3 garden in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

I started my Dahlia tubers last week and they already have some leaves started. I’m worried they maybe too moist but seem good so far. Wish I’d know I could go without soil! (Zone 5). Also, I didn’t know I could do this with the Glads! Thank you ☺️ Great video!

Thank you so much for this video! I'm in a higher elevation in Colorado and it KILLS me that the first frost cones as soon as my glads bloom! Luckily my dahlias ate usually in containers so there i am, heaving these huge pots indoors to salvage them! I started my glads inside this year and I think I'm gonna beat the weather this year, thanks to you!

Since Covid happened and I was prisoner at home and all I had left to keep my sanity was my garden, I began to care and love flowers...and chickens lol...and my love or hobby grows yearly. Our summers are very short and our winters can last 6-7 months, so I'm so ready to move south so I enjoy gardening and flowers blooming all year long. I just can't be locked inside 6 months at a time because of winter or whatever.

My Dahlias are in transit... and I was trying to figure out how many pots I needed to scoop up for them because I wanted to give them a head start! But I'll be trying this instead! Thanks for saving me the headache of doing it the other way!!!!

They did sprout but it takes up a ton of room and I was nervous that they must need some water. I put them on heat mats (70F) and under lights. This is seriously revolutionary! "You are not behind" I needed to hear that! I started a few things too early, & now they're beginning to get root bound in their pots & then I have things that really need put in the ground, so I'm feeling really behind because of the time it's taking me to pot all these things up but I need to remember that I started all these things to get a Jumpstart & get blooms as early as possible- it's going to be OK if I get them in a little later than planned! I'm just paranoid because last year I had a lot of my vegetables get root bound and they barely produced at all! By the time they started to recover it was in the high 90's every day and their blossoms just started to dry up and fall off! 😩 But even if I have to restart a few things from seed- it's going to he ok!

I am gonna try sit them on my brightest window seal when my new dahlia tubers arrive... Do you suggest moist them, may fast speed this process? I don't have a rack with grow lights... And for now, I am pre-sprouting my anemone corms in a dark moist bag also soil-less. I am checking regularly for mold, fingers crossed!

Hi , I'm so happy I found this video. You have answered so many questions in this 1 video lol😊 I bought a pack of 3 Gladiolus from the Dollar Store a few years ago. I leave the bulbs inground all winter. I bought more yesterday . Now thanks to you I know what to do. I bumped into a video about savings seed. So now I have so many seeds from everything I grew. Plus picking dead flower tops off plants I see 🤫😅🤣 If I started selling seeds I would make so much $$$ just from my snapdragon seeds alone. Lol After my Gladiolus died , I took all the seeds out. I'm trying to find out what these seeds grow into 🫢 Do they grow into a bulb? If so, how and when should I put these seeds in soil? Cheers from Toronto

@@ShiftingRoots 🤣😂 You saying that made me 😂🤣 so hard.. I love gardening. I have 8 Rubbermaid bins in my dining room full of Red Wiggler Composting Worms. I use lots of worm castings and make Tea's with the castings, to put in my soil, and weekly spray all plants. Best fertilizer ever. I didn't have any bug invasion at all.. I'm great at raising the Worms.. But I have absolutely no idea what most flowers are called. So I use 3 different apps, to identify flowers. lol Why 3 you ask.?? Coz most times 2 will give me 2 different names. 😂 😂 Free versions eh lol I just looked on the app to make sure I am talking about the same flower you are. I think I am. If Gladiolus grows from a bulb, then sprouts green pointy leaves, then 1 tall stock, that flowers grow on.. Then we are talking about the same flower lol I opened one of the dried flower pods. And there was lots of beige flaky stuff with a seed. I am laughing so much, Here I am asking someone that has so much knowledge about plants. And what I thought were seeds, there probably not .. lol I'm sure you have opened one up , haven't you 🤔 lol I really appreciate you replying. 🙂 I subscribe, started watching some videos. cheers

Today, about ½ of them are starting to pop up . I still have no idea what they will grow into 😅😆 😂 tho Meaning, will they grow bulbs ? lol I will send you another update once I find out So you will know the answer to 😊 Ohh 1 more question. 😆 🤣 😂 Can I start Allium bulbs in water to ?
