It was a disadvantage. He had to pit for slicks because the inters were slow and degrading rapidly on the dry track. Can’t remember the results but it was a gamble that didn’t pay off and cost him.

The inter tyres don't really have more grip. The grooves in the inters allow water to be displaced and for the rubber of the tyre to contact the ground. Slick tyres do not have these grooves, so less of the tyre will be in contact with the ground, giving less area for the braking and traction to be applied across. In dry conditions however, the grooves in the inter tyres mean these have less contact area with the track, so less grip.

He finished 2nd behind Ocon. He finished 3rd on the road but Vettel was disqualified post-race. Mercedes botched the decision to keep him out on intermediates at the start (which cost him an easy win), but then put him on a strategy which gave him a shot at winning. Crazy thing was he very nearly won too, had it not been for Alonso holding him up late on he’d have probably caught Ocon and Vettel and won. He was lapping 3 seconds a lap faster than them in the final laps.
