Looking fwd to seeing your progress with this one, I went through the same experience in June this year when I restored my CBR400RR which has been sat for 20 years, and thankfully no big surprises that weren't expected. Rides even better than I remember after fitting sticky tyres and replacing fork seals and oil etc. Good luck with the 750.
Still a lovely bike 33 years later!
Yes!!! At last chopsy a resto project,wasn’t sure what I’d see first,zxr or hypermotard.Absolutely love your resto vids.Surface corrosion always looks bad,I done an RD years ago and that had rot in the frame and swing arm but got it professionally welded and repaired and powder coated,look great afterwards.

LOl I'm 56 and when these came out wanted one soo badly but had to settle for a s/h GSXR750K which I loved. This was a wonderful period of bikes and cant believe they are now vintage, how quickly time moves!
Projects like this have ended up being my most enjoyed bikes. I have two 1997 bikes I've bought back to life, the most recent a vfr750 (standing for about 8yrs) which I use fairly regularly. Molasses works well on rusty fuel tanks, make a solution mixed water and leave to soak. A tip picked up from Mr Millyard 😊. Look forward to seeing the progress, I think this bike is recoverable, and you'll really enjoy it once complete. It's a great thing to do.

Doesn't look too bad Chopsy, you always get superficial corrosion, some bits can be cleaned up, other bits you clean and recoat. It's good someone seems to have serviced it, better for the internals, gets rid of moisture within the engine 👍 Can't wait for future installments 🙂

I'll be surprised if that cam cover is able to be saved, but we'll see 🤞 Some parts will be restorable, others not so much. I was surprised how bad it was if I'm honest as it was in a shed, obviously not a good one. My Y2k ZX9r was sat up for five years and had a lot done to it but was not nears a rough, I know it's half the time this was sat up, but it was outside 😂
the starter button knocked the camera out how untimely 🤣😂 you were very welcome to the workshop manual 👍

Very interesting one Chops. Love these sorts of vids. Best of luck & can't wait to see the outcome.
You git! You left it on a cliffhanger! Thank you for trying to restore the ZXR 750. I remember it when it first came out. I went down to the local Kawasaki dealership to take a look at a ZZR 1100 and I almost broke my neck rubbernecking as I went past one on the shop floor. My pants became moist as I looked over it, completely forgetting for a while why I came to dealership in the first place!
Looking good Chopsy 👍😮 I'm sure you'll get it up and running ! Lovely bike the zxr always liked its looks when it first came out . And the best colour the green one . Looking forward to the next episode .👍👍
Great project Chopsie, left us on a cliffhanger too!

Think giving it a thorough scub down and clean might make you more optimistic, much of the cr.... grime will be superficial and you might be surprised at it's actual condition. Whatever the case, it'll need a strip down so a parts washer might come in handy! 😀 Really looking forward to seeing it progress.
Oh Chopsey ya wee bugger, I was waiting for it to start! 😆
Looking forward to the series as I have just bought a 1989 zxr750 which has been stored since 2006
Good seeing a bike or car being brought back to life and given a new beginning. I have a VFR800 fi that I recommisioned after 5 yrs standing in a back garden, no wd40, no cover nothing. The guy simply lost confidence literally overnight and stopped using it, even starting it up and running the motor. It consumed a ton of money to get everything as it should be. when I dropped the oil it was brown and the consistency of dishwater.... I used a cheap semi synth for initial start and then changed it again immediately with another new filter for a quality branded oil
One of my favorite bikes of all time.
I've got a GPZ900 that I've been restoring for years that was in the same state as this chops, the engine is very similar. Internally it was spot on after a strip down. That pipe under the carbs was the same on mine but it was just cosmetic, all of the metal coolant pipes were shite but only one of them was unsalvageable. It's not as bad as it looks.
Nice one enjoyed this! Especially when you were fingering those carbs. I am going to bet it doesn't start!! Which makes it more fun 😁 I'm staying tuned 👍🏼

Nice bike , i love old ZXR's. I guess you have a bit of a mix . Radiator , airbox and fairing are 89 H1 , swingarm is H2 , tacho is L model and not sure about the oil filter 😅. And the bolt in the upper engine mount was a race track mod , too much vibration for road use. Gonna keep an eye on this one 👍.

I used to sell ZXR parts on ebay but 6 months ago deleted my account. I still have quite a quantity. By the way that coolant reservoir sometimes get sold for £200 if you have the rubber band to it.
A lot of people think carbbed bikes don't have fuel pumps, but most do, especially larger capacity bikes. It will run without one, but the low pressure pump (2-3psi) just makes sure it is fed enough fuel so it doesn't bog down when you open up the throttle. Put that camera down the sparkplug holes to check in there, put a little oil in them too to soak around the rings before trying to turn the engine over, and maybe do that manually the first time.
@LambChopRides

unfortunately the camera was only with me for one day to check the tank or would have stuck it everywhere hehe.
Looking forward to starting work on my H2 as well, my ZZR11 is nearly done so that’s the next one in-line. I’m not based too far from you so once they’re both up and running (year or so, maybe longer) then get in touch. Just shout if you need any steerage as I’ve done a couple of zxr’s before. 👍

You must have a Crystal Ball.
Looking forward to the rest of the restoration. I do a lot of start ups on old bikes, the first job is to quirt oil into the bore, remove the cam cover so you can refill the oil by pouring it over the cams, then crank the engine with the spark plugs out, before attempting to start it. Just use a remote fuel tank hung from the ceiling, then there will be no need to use the fuel pump which shouldn’t be operated without fuel as it destroys them. With the carb cleaning concentrate on the pilot jets as will have to hold the bike at 3-4,000 rpm to keep.

Talk about leaving us on a cliff hanger chopsy!!!!!! That bike looks pretty decent to me. The tank will clean up, look into electrolysis procedure, it’s a doddle to do and has mega results, also that scope you have borrowed, pull the plugs out and fire it down into the cylinders, it’ll give you a good idea what’s going on inside there without stripping it! I’m a 3 decade career tech so seen my fair share of wonky motors, but all the signs are looking good on that old girl! I’m well gonna be following this build! Have fun chopsy!!!!!! 👍👍👍

I bought a 1987 Kawasaki GPX-750R in the mid 1990s in Japan. Although it was used, it was pristine and had less than 10KM on the clock. It sure seemed fast at the time. There could be some connection engine-wise although a few Google searched suggest maybe yes, maybe no.
@NotNowCato1254
Жыл бұрын
I had an '88 GPX back in the day - couldn't afford a new ZXR (it was 1990). Strong engine and gearbox nonetheless. I believe the ZXR motor was derived from the GPX but obviously had a completely different head, valve gear etc. The GPX was like a dinosaur compared to this overall - had more in common with a GPz900 - old school steel frame, carbs mounted horizontally behind the block etc. Looking forward to seeing this beauty brought back to life 👍
Interesting to see this pop up in my suggested vids. I have a ZXR Collection. I'm a Kawasaki Fetishist 😊. One of mine I built in 98. She's a Q plate from birth & very special to me. I had an alternator belt go on the M5 by Droitwich once. I pushed her all the way to the truck stop. That got replaced with a McDonald's years ago. I laughed when you said about how fiddly the air box was. Yea there's a few whacky things on them. Still my favourite bike. Please don't break it for parts. Fancy a ZXR750 meet up & ride out?

I'm glad I tuned in last night to see your still you. I love that. I love Bruce too. I'm looking forward to seeing this series. 🤘
Most of the alloy corrosion looks like surface corrosion so soda blasting should brink that back to new. I did have a tank restored on an K5 Honda 4 which internally was much worse than yours and it cleaned up fine. The diaphragms in the carb tops may be a problem as they are pretty thin material. So long as not fuel has got up there or moisture they should be ok. A ten yr old battey will be almost suphated up, tossit and get a new sealed unit. The rest of it depends on how much you're willing to spend on the project. Might take you a couple of years but you'll have one neat machine at the end.
If it was a Suzuki I would say yes it will start but a Kwacker, not so sure. Superb vid chops as always.

Did you drop a bit of oil down the bores prior to cranking her over ? Normally when I'm getting one of these going the pilot jets and float valves are the main issue.
