I feel like all the current chaos in the world has made things incredibly clear and put me in the perfect position to finally live out my farming dream. When I started my degree I wanted to study soil science as a biology major but my natural strength in school was history & literature not science & math, so I went with my strengths and do still truly enjoy studying history. When Covid hit I was living & working in the city. Now I have been able to move out to a more rural location on 3 acres while working at my best friends open air produce market. Her and her husband have been building their customer base for years and the store has become a local favorite. Yet they still outsource all of their produce from farmers all over the state. I built compost & healthy soil all summer and have just finished preparing my rows & transplanting my fall crops from my makeshift nursery. All based on what customers are constantly asking for and what my friends have told me they need :) I’m excited to see how far I can go

I am not a market gardener nor I am sure I want to be one, but I enjoy your content and I can apply the knowledge I get here to other areas of life. Thank you!

Yes! I’d have to market micro greens in the winter #alaska . I work in the restaurant industry, I could make deals😉 •Salad greens, root veggies, unique potato varieties, tomatoes, micro greens, and mushrooms •Take out a second mortgage on my house🤣

Hi Moreno! Awesome awesome video! Of all the farmers I follow on KZread you're the only one willing to actually share financial information. I can answer Question 1 -100% yes. Question 2 - I am a super saver. I can live off little no family or kids. Question 3 is my biggest concern. Is it possible to make a video on marketing and client relations? Who are the clients? Can you elaborate the differences between 'the market', retail, CSA, restaurants and your experience and advice with each? We rarely see any videos on that part of farming. Question 4 will be fairly easy over time, waiting 3 years to get the 'organic' certification in EU while I do online work. Question 5: I've seen your videos and many others. I also have a solid potential investor. Anyway. Thanks again!!!

No. 1 is such an important question that aspiring farmers need to ask themselves BEFORE they take the plunge and sink money into land, equipment, supplies etc. Pastoral, romantic, let's-live-off-the-land dreams are well and good, but most of us from non-agricultural backgrounds have no idea what running a farm entails. It is a 24/ 7 job, and you sometimes run at a loss. Nothing like having to let crops rot in the field/ chop-and-drop/ till them under, for a reality check :/

Hey Shane. The first couple of months that it all started the demands went through the roof. We're now doing more and more home delivery service. It's really a great way of working. We also still have our wholesale accounts that are extremely stable. In fact, we can't really keep up with their demands. If we would have 10x the land surface we would still be able to sell everything (if we diversified!). If one thing this situation has taught us it's that small farms are extremely important. People will need to continue to eat so in that regard, healthy and locally grown food is not such a bad industry to be in;)

Thanks for sharing! Overall I agree but nothing is 100% a given, some people work themselves hard, maybe too hard, while others succeed while having a pretty good time. Talking about the No-Till Growers episodes with Cheyenne Sundance vs Zach Selby for example. And for true sustainability we have to take good care of ourselves too. For me that may mean taking time off during the hottest weeks of the year when our most profitable crops don't do too well anyways, why work harder for less results when you can take time off to recharge and be ready for when hard work makes more sense

Great advices.lm growing fruit trees. My target is to have 5 or 8 harvests avocadoes 2 aug and nov guava 4 crops and bananas leaves are in high demand weekly. .organic vegs to eat. This year testing dates and pomerganates so far it looks good. Raise some free range chicken to eat. Ps I wish my earth is black like yr farm. Here the dry is hot and earth baked..

Moreno if you had the option to grow in space without tree canopy overhead would you? If you had both space with canopy and without avaliable would you utilize both depending on crop?

My question is how to work your crops on rolling to keep production weekly or at least every 15 days no stop??? Of 15 to 20 products

Do you ever go on vacations? Or is it really hard to leave the farm for a longer period?

What fruit/nut trees would you recommend if I wanted to have a similar market garden layout to yours? I think having trees spaced correctly would be great for hot/humid regions (Zone 9b). Also thanks for all your information and videos!

Hey! I would go for a mixture of productive and support species that are known to be performing well within your area. Also, make sure to base the majority of the production of perennial tree/plant systems on the local demand. In fact, I've got a video planned that will be online within a couple of weeks that will go into this and several other tips and considerations for such a setup.

I just learned how insanely advantaged small footprint farms are in my country. They basically assume you make no money, so you are essentially tax exempt regardless of your actual income. How is it with you?
