Starting a 320 litre big engine made in 1935

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey Folks, today we are starting a Werkspoor TM356. It's an 320L big 6 cyllinder engine with a 350 Bore. We did this at ''Stichting Historische Verbrandingsmotoren Papendrecht'' based in the Netherland. You can see more on their website: shvp.nl/

    I love that despite being on different ends of the planet, speaking different languages, and never having met, we are still all captivated by the same engines and neat machines doing cool stuff and the sheer scale of this engine is mind boggling. So cool to see, thanks for sharing this incredible feat of engineering with all of us on here!

    That is a beautiful example of mechanical art! I'm glad that people have saved these old engines for all of us to hear and see. I bet you were smiling for a week after starting that massive hunk of iron! I could listen to that engine running for hours, thanks for sharing this!

    I love it. Watching this engine run reminds me of the scenes of the running submarine engine in the World War Two movie Das Boot filmed in 1980. I'm not sure where that engine is or even if it an actual German U-Boat engine but I think it is. Of course the above engine is HUGE when compared to the U Boat engine.

    Really 320. This engine is as high as a small house. There are stairs to climb on the cylinder head, where Milo check the valvetrain. 32 L is the kind of motor you can find on big trucks. WWII aircraft had 32 L motors.

    Only 460HP? Is that all? I bet if you dyno'd that today you would find that it makes significantly more horsepower than it was originally claimed and rated for. A lot of the older engines and other locomotive machinery of the past were guesstimated figures and actual power often is far higher than originally rated, in other cases it can be far lower than originally rated too. Modern dyno's are far more accurate than they were in the past, and even today you can get figures that vary by as much as 5% between two different dyno's! Awesome piece of machinery, and it is great too see that after almost one hundred years that it is still going with what I assume are most of the original parts to it. It's certainly not built for performance, but rather, it is built to provide a guaranteed minimum amount of power with minimal effort and maximal reliability at all times. Of course these days their are more efficient ways of producing that power, even with the same mechanicals by just adjusting things like valve timings and the fuel being used to be a more calorific fuel than conventional old age diesel that this thing uses. You could then in turn reduce maintenance requirements and reduce pollutants that the engine puts out, thus further extending it's usable lifespan should it ever be needed. In these modern times a focus on getting existing things to last longer, be more efficient, and be less pollutant is critical to ensuring out future survival, and, too ensuring that ever increasing artificial costs can be counteracted by refusing to part-take in the fools game that is modern day economics and instead focusing on yourself and your fellow people and not playing ball with the corrupt politicians and financial BS'ers.

    only 460hp, cuz max rpm is 320. Horsepower is torque*rpm. So big engines have low power but a heck ton of torque. At max power, the torque on this would be something like 10,000 Nm, which admittedly is low given the size of this beast, but remember this is 1935, efficiency was way lower.

  • @DickHolman

    @DickHolman

    It was built for performance. Its performance specs are high torque, high hp, low speed, high reliability & endurance. Werkspoor specialised in engines with this type of performance.

    I once worked on a ship with a engine of similar size. It had 750 hp at 400 or 440rpm (can't remember) build in 1967. The engine broke down after parts failure shortly after a major overhaul. It was replaced by a 2006 cummins with 1000 hp, but the old engine was actually stronger and way more efficient.

    @@autobootpiloot Old doesn't mean bad, and it seems that often when vehicles are retrofitted the new propulsion methods just are not as reliable. This beast is sure to be HIGHLY reliable minus normal metal fatigue over time and micro vibrations maybe causing minor wear against the cylinder walls.

  • @longnamedude3947

    @@jackopolo4635 You can be sure this has more torque than would ever be needed for it's intended application, because in industrial applications where reliability is needed it is worth the extra expense of over specifying your power/torque needs way above what is required because that way you ensure your machinery is never under any heavy stress.
