You were the inspiration for me buying a brick hammer 😁, When stripping washer motors I keep the rotor seperate but sometimes I get a solid black looking rotor with no copper on so chuck it in the reject motor bin

I had to replace the starter motor on my truck. I ended up just cutting off some of the copper bolt with bolt cutters. It seemed like a greasy solid fortress to get into, so I got motor price for it. Thanks for showing what’s actually in it! An angle grinder would be a nice tool to get for fathers’ day...🤔

Great video Ian. I’ve been stripping cable ,motors etc for years I spent full four Day’s recently just stripping piles of cable loads of motors etc and yes I made £398 but this doesn’t even take into account my labour so it’s not cost effective but I look at it as I would have thrown it all away and made nothing. So happy days. I also made in those four days a awesome cable stripping machine motorised by a running machine I bought on ebay for £30 stripping cable is minutes instead of hours of work now. Keep up the great vids.

A little scrap yard trick of the trade: when it comes to sheet or cast aluminum it can have 2% contamination taking off that ruber piece and that small steel piece is time wasted but understandably yards will say its dirty in order to pay you less.

Ian, I'm from across the pond, as you would say. I've been scrapping motors for over five years. I do alot of starters. One the quickest way to get screws out from the outside cylinder is use a torch. Also, all though a hobby most starters will return #1 copper here in the US. Just food for thought. Would like to see you try a alternator sometime. Was nice to watch a fellow scrapper.

Im always amazed people junk starter motors, out of all the vehicles and plant ive run ive yet to have a starter i couldnt get reconditioned. The guy i use will do a starter motor for around £50, bloody good value on a big starter motir over a new one, or a punt in the dark with a salvadge one. A decent haul all the same.

Don't waste cutting discs on halving the motor lengthways- stand it on it's end, get a narrow wood chisel and chop the copper through at the top. Cut the joiners between each coil, prise the coils open where you chiselled them then upend it. Using a medium flat screwdriver, lever the cut loops out from the uncut ends. As for the solenoid, where the end is rolled over to close it, cut away only the rolled end to allow entire insides to slide out without having chopped wire to bits like you did. I dismantled a Valiant slant six starter this way- the windings in the motor looked identical, but the solenoid wire was much heavier gauge and a fair bit more. Unfortunately never weighed it. It's 10 30 pm here in Wallaroo- I'm going out to the shed cause I just realised I have a couple old XJ40 alternators I could strip!

Search this on YT (Skillful Young Guy Rewinding Process Of Caterpillar Starter Motor-Rebuilding Starter Motor Armature). It’s worth a watch to learn more about how to disassemble these kinds of things. Basically he melts the solder out.

    Minus electric and labour 🤔

Awe cmon the electric is negligible, even todays shocking price of 17p a kw, ( 6p or less back then ). I can put a 1kw electric fire on for one hour and it would cost 17p, Labour. Well that’s down to how much you value your time. As a hobbyist my time is free. But yes there are costs, the cutting discs cost as well. But I do appreciate the comment. It does raise the point of hidden costs.
