Started learning foot brake | unexpected wipeout

Hi. I was returning from dropping my rental vehicle off (previous video below pickling it up) and wanted to try foot braking. It was cool until a tree seed knocked me down head first into the sidewalk. Thankfully I had all my gear on.
Continued work on foot brake for next couple days and still working on it. Glad to get it started and many more hours to feel confident at faster speeds and corners.

A couple of points. Get a foot brake sole otherwise you are going to shred your new shoes. It’s basically a piece of rubber you glue to the sole of your shoe. When you footbrake place your foot down heel first. The friction will then bring the rest of your foot down but you will have control. Also, try and keep contact between the board and your foot brake foot, around the ankle height. Lastly place your foot brake foot down closer to the front wheels. Again friction will move it back but you’ll have more control

Awesome pointers and thank you-will pay closer attention to the details. I do have the Becker soles on my vans, but switched shoes because the back of heels were painful. Will look to see if there is something else that still allows me to run off board?

Footbraking is an extremely important, fundamental, technique. It will save your bacon, more than once. However, it is easy to get the form wrong, especially in an emergency stop. For older skaters, like myself, footbraking has led to the most persistent soreness in my knees and ankles. My biggest tip is to tighten your core when footbraking; it helps you to more precisely control your weight distribution.

Thank you for that core tightening and weight distribution- makes sense. I honestly have minimal confidence in foot braking-more like a drag - for now. Emergency stops - working on it - but feel comfy with sloppy push up slide.

Great progress. IMO it's all about being able to balance on your front foot on the board. That unlocks effortless pushing and easy footbraking. You're gonna shred those Nikes footbraking, but that's life. Shoes with dampening are usually not favored riding DH. Board feel and maximum control is usually valued over comfort. My feet are bad so I use custom molded orthotic soles in my skate shoes. Maybe something to look into if you ever feel like the Nikes don't give you enough control.

Thank you and kind of figured on sneaker selection. I may transition back to flat shoes - maybe - when I get better control? It may be a phase idk.

Put your heel down first then the rest of your foot.

Will definitely be practicing more with this specific technique. The front of my Becker sole came loose because I inadvertently did a quick toe first vs heel. Thank you for commenting.
