StarTalk Podcast: The Code of Life and CRISPR with Jennifer Doudna and Walter Isaacson

Ғылым және технология

Are we entering the age of designer babies? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice sit down with biographer and writer of The Code Breaker Walter Isaacson to explore Neil’s interview with Nobel Prize-winning biochemist, Jennifer Doudna, about her pioneering work with CRISPR technology.
Are molecules the new microchip? You’ll learn about the life sciences revolution and the potentials of genome editing through CRISPR technology. We discuss Doudna’s early work with RNA and it’s core questions: how do you go from organic molecules to RNA? Did life start elsewhere? But if it did, how did it start there? Doudna explains how CRISPR works, along with its capabilities and limitations. Could CRISPR be used to eliminate genetic conditions? Create super soldiers?
We break down the difference between somatic and germline editing and the ethical challenges that come with the latter. Is editing DNA unethical? Are there instances where it would be unethical not to? Find out how CRISPR should be regulated and if it would even be possible to police. What happens when the government makes reproductive decisions? We examine society’s definitions of disability and the risk of this technology falling into eugenics. Is society ready to handle this power?
Discover why Doudna won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and not biology. We explore the importance of competition and duty in science. How is CRISPR technology helping in the fight against COVID-19? We explore current uses of CRISPR with Doudna’s Innovative Genomics Institute, and where the future of this technology is going. How do we use this technology to solve real-world problems while preserving diversity and respecting individuality? Are fears about designer babies justified? All these big societal questions, plus, find what Jennifer Doudna and Benjamin Franklin have in common.

The cool thing is, that Chuck doesn't THINK he is. He sometimes asks the 'dumb' questions that elicit the answers that we need to actually understand some of the more complex things they're talking about. He's certainly grown, and by asking the questions to tie things together in his mind, he gets us the answers we need to put things together for the rest of us. It's a great combo for a podcast that, in the BEST way 'both sides' it...the expert and the 'not expert, but knows what to ask'...

We can't blame Dr Doudna, discovery of CRISPR was inevitable, but now Pandora's box is open, the genie is out of the bottle. Doudna and Isaacson kept saying that regulation and consensus would protect us, that problems wouldn't arise for a long time, but the future is a long time. Sooner or later we will learn to shape and play with biology and evolution, humanity will morph into combinations with other animals and unimaginable new designer forms. It'll be wild, life will go on.

Gattaca came immediately to mind. Other works where even cosmetic tweaks with skins, eyes, nails, etc customized by shape, colour, etc. Mutations of various kinds are eventually going to be mainstream normal (or taboo). The unaddressed point here was the potential for unexpected side effects and results of changes, since the whole ripple effects come into play since no change happens in a vacuum. All this also completely overlooks the potential for weaponization.

There probably are but since this is an open forum type audience, the questions need to be more generic as opposed to indepth. Even when Neil is explaining things he does not dig in to deep. The audience wants to be able to understand what they are talking about. To much scientific jargon will turn people off. The reason Neil and Chuck are so popular is because they add humor and laughter to the program and keep it light. Neil could ask deeper questions but why when he is getting the best answers in a way that makes sense and gives you something to think about. If you are interested research the topic.

You could even design babies to be designers as babies so that they would be designer baby designer babies. 😄 In all seriousness though I really don't think we will be able to control it without moving the Doomsday Clock like we do with nukes. We can't control people socially or otherwise hacking the phones of the mentally ill to make them jump the White House fence, run an 18-wheeler into a crowd, mail pipebombs, storm the Capitol and all kinds of other "social media told me to do it" horror scenarios, because we can't control social media. Similarly this has the same, "it's my body, I want my baby to glow in the dark" ethics issue where some president is going to come along and say "well y'can't stop progress" because there is so much money to be made. You could charge $100,000 per glow in the dark baby mod. Without laws I'm afraid it's not very controllable, which has the unfortunate side effect of infringing on people's rights. Another scientific topic Star Trek totally covered with, "KKKAAAAAAAAAAAHHHNNn!"

Hi, Some time ago I watched a video where you explained a freezing pipe keeps water from freezing because it compresses it, until it can’t contain it then the water freezes. I am wondering does this also happen in the reverse? Can a pipe stop a material from heating up and expanding?

Yes, we are certainly entering the world of designer babies. Absolute certainty within a hundred years, likely sooner.

An important fact they forgot to mention was that humans developed sickle cell anemia as an evolutionary deterrent against malaria. Which is why people had it in the first place; much like how some genetic diseases arise from evolutionary pressures.
