I would absolutely love a video going deeper into the financial side. What do taxes look like, when/how to pay yourself, how much to invest, etc. Your videos are always so helpful!

FYI if you are making stuffies YOU ARE SELLING NOVELTY ITEMS NOT TOYS. Toys require fire and safety testing and it extremely hard to past with yarn & extremely expensive. Each new pattern and variant (color ways extra rows, extra stuffing ECT,) also needs tested. Also you are required to post on any sales channel that if it has small parts that they are a choking hazard

I would be careful with this. In the Uk you have to safety test if it has play value. You can’t make a plushie and claim it’s not a toy. I would read up the law of where you’re from before selling.

@idkwuzgoinon Great, actually! I have friends who donate yarn to me now! I'm getting faster and wayyy more comfortable with pattern reading and knowing when/where there are mistakes. I'm beginning to realize there are things I like the look of, but can't stand actually making them so I'm figuring those out! Lol How is your journey so far?

FYI many states have mobile vendor requirements. Our state requires a fire rated tent and to have a no smoking sign, and to carry a specific fire extinguisher. My state also requires us to do quarterly taxes once you hit NEXUS (a thousand in sales). Definitely consult a small business book keeper for you area.

I've been wanting to start a crochet business and was wondering if you make clothes/amigurumi and you're just selling the item and not the pattern do you need to have a tester or can you just go ahead and sell the item? Thank you for all of your videos, I’ve learned literally SO much! People are now asking me questions how I’m doing so well with my crochet small business so fast. I always say my girl Cameron on KZread lol! If one day you could do a video on how to edit pictures for your items would be awesome. Like how to stage, what app filter to use that’s good for product photos, etc. Im not social media savvy at all and want my stuff to look more professional on my pages 😊

Another tip would be get a CPA (Certified Public Accountant). He/she will help you file the sales tax and tax returns. This is no matter what you are selling in handmade items or other industry (handmade crochet/knit items, cleaning, food, massage, etc). I do agree with breakingloveopen's comment on Sole proprietorship vs. an L.L.C.

hello!! im super inspired now to start a business, i already have a decent group of people around me in my school community who are willing to commission me for my products, however i am in my final year of high school and will be going abroad for further studies. whilst its not directly related to crocheting, i still enjoy your videos and would love advice on how to start an online business specifically? so like websites and online commission forms. whilst i see most of your content is on markets, i would still be interested to hear any advice you have for online businesses! thank you

I hope you don't mind that I switch my comment from the last video to this one as it fits better: I was wondering what the legal requirements in the US are when selling plushies/amigurumis. Here in Europe the wool, the filling etc. and even the finished plushie has to be ce-certified - because they are considered toys. Even if it‘s not meant to be a toy (like the pumpkins for example) makers who even just want to donate their products which I thought about) have to stick to these rules. It does not matter if you say they are not meant to be toys or are only for children above three years. As long as it looks like it and could be appealing to kids, you have to meet the requirements. Sorry for the long comment but I am so curious if you have to deal with anything like that in the States?

There are similar regulations here in the U.S., but they don't seem as extreme as you've described!

Names are the hardest. I did attempt a quilting business and it was called Wholecloth and Scraps but it failed. Not even sure what to call my crochet business because I will still have some sewn/quilted items too.

Naming is incredibly hard! Since you're having more than just crocheted items, I recommend you name it something more general about crafting or handmade stuffs!

What about the legal side of crotchet designs. Majority of the things I make are from KZread videos or written designs in books/online. How do we know what designs are okay to be using?

Typically, pattern writers will disclose their preferred method of being credited, if at all! If they are sharing a pattern on an open platform like YT, usually simply having some sort of disclosure on your part of whose it is will work! For example, when people ask me about some of the products I sell, I send them the link to the original creator's page and make sure to tell them that it's their pattern! On social media, you should ALWAYS credit the original creator. When in doubt, just credit the creator!

Are you able to do markets without getting your homemade business registered or getting permits

There certainly are some markets that will not require a license of some sort, but not having the proper permits/licenses/registrations/etc. will definitely limit you!

Certainly! I don't see why not! Cricut's would play well with crochet items, so you would have two different types of products going on. So long as they are thematically aligned with your brand, I think it could work wonderfully!

Business regulations are different based on where you are from, so I couldn't give you a definitive answer. However, many places follow the practice of requiring the proper documentation and licenses only at and above a certain income amount, such as $10,000.

I what like to know if this would be good for me as I make handmade baby booties and handmade crochet hats from preemies to adults and the styles are animals Characters and regular hats as I only charge $15 without Earflaps and $20 with earflaps

Another tip is if you’re selling internationally to look up the laws before shipping! A popular amigurumi maker on KZread has shipped her stuff internationally and she obviously hasn’t looked into it as the law for selling anything with play value in the UK and much of Europe is really strict. Some countries require tagging and certain information on the tagging, and a lot of people over look this but in the UK if trading standards visits a market you’re at and sees you aren’t following the law they will confiscate everything and fine you up to thousands. I also wouldn’t want to support a business that doesn’t test their products properly 🤷‍♀️

You're so right that making sure you are following all the laws and regulations are super important! Laws are very different everywhere you go, so making sure your products are following all the rules for wherever their destination is is super important!

Yes, that is definitely a complicated part of it! I would look into the laws of where you're from, as some places have different rules about how you apply taxes (or don't apply them) depending on location! I'd recommend a little research into what is required of you!
