We have one of those giant batteries here in SE Missouri called Tom Sauk mountain. It's a 1.5 Billion gallon reservoir they pump water into at night and release during peak electric demands. I will be watching for you as you pass Ste. Genevieve, MO (the oldest town west of the Mississippi. I'm looking forward to following your trip!

We LOVE Watts Bar Lake. It is so beautiful up there. I love that you have mountains in the background when anchoring on the lake. Can't wait to come back up that way again. We always say if we had known how beautiful it was on the river up there, we would have found a way to move there when we were younger.

I read a post from another looper where they put put tie off line for locking through a flexible clear plastic hose. (probably a 1") by holding that it gave the line some rigidity making it easier to loop over the bollard. That might be helpful for you or not.

Thanks for the suggestion. We have seen a variation of what you are describing. I really do enjoy the challenge of looping the Ballard. I am not nervous at all about it anymore and think it is fun. It's exciting when you get it on the first try!

The Tennessee River is a beautiful river and we are very blessed it’s our home area. It has everything - gorgeous scenery, great marinas & coves and clean water. Thanks for watching and your comment.

Something to think about. Usually the upper end of the lock chamber will be a smoother ride than being closer to the lower end of the lock chamber. Be safe and enjoy your trip

there is a place around there somewhere, from dreams *I* HAVE been there before diff life and watnot... but... there is like 10 ''floors'' or levels... with stairs going UP FROM THE RIVER to the TOP OF THE HILL and there are a couple rooms on each floor cut into the hillside... all greeen garden fountians and water runs from the top down the sides of the stairs , eh... 90% sure it's a RIVER on the LOOP summwhere... not in a lake someplace ...altho the GARDEN and STAIRWAY is a ''destination spot'' still, was more of a spot before, something about mineral springs pools at/near the top of the stairs... LOVE JOY COMPASSION

Loved this very informative video. I am learning everything I can about the loop. Can you please educate me on how to tie a line at midship correctly when at the lock. I have heard never tie them just wrap around the cleat and hold for easy release if needed. I have also heard have a knife ready to cut line if needed. So I’m not sure which way it is done. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to following your adventures. Thank you

I always wrap the rope a couple of times around the cleat so it will not slip and hold the rope the entire time. This way if the bollard catches or something happens I can loosen or release the rope. We never leave the rope unattended. I am not sure why you would need the knife if you don't lock the rope down. I show this in multiple videos so keep watching! 😄

At about 6 minutes into the video is a good shot how to secure the line to a cleat while leaving is loose enough to quickly release.

There's a road where you drive over this reservoir on top of Raccoon Mountain.

NEVER, NEVER, Tie off to the lock bollard because if it sticks going either direction you will be in serious trouble. Definitely interesting seeing someone starting the Great Loop from Chatanooga, we look forward to seeing some of your next videos.

You are right. And a good explanttion why you should not do that. It is tempting, I know, because it takes a long time for some locks and we are all used to running around and trying to get things done. It is hard to stand there and monitor a rope, but must be done.

Have you guesstimated a cost differential if clockwise vs counterclockwise?? As in 2x 3x or 10x. Fighting the current ? Thx

I believe the only parts of the backwards loop that may cost extra fuel are the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. Having traveled them twice against the current I’d estimate double the fuel consumption for that part. Going clockwise you get to go with the current on the Ohio and Tennessee rivers and that makes up for the extra fuel going up the Tem-Tom.

Have you gone under the 19 ft bridge in Chicago? We are looking at carver 560 hard top

We have safely passed under that bridge 3 times. We need to lower our antennas and temporarily remove our anchor light mast. We love the comfort and long range capabilities of our Carver Voyager. Good luck in your boat search.

I use Navionics. I think it works pretty well. Ed uses the old Raymarine and I am the second pair of eyes for him. We never trust anything 100% and always keep a watch on what is ahead of us to make decisions.

We missed the winter to go south due to medical reasons and we didn't want to sit around waiting for winter again, so we decided to take off now. We also enjoy the freedom of being able to pull into any marina and get a spot and we are the only one in an anchorage. We don't have to worry about people that might not have the experience in anchoring we wish they did. The downside is it can be a little lonely on the rivers. Watch our video: Are We Crazy? That will give you a good answer to our pros and cons.

Nice boat and good info on locking. Also, never heard that term for the 'doors', but the name makes sense now that you say it. Are y'all from here, or did you just dock here for a while? This is nit-picking, but that's Baylor School not college. It's a 6-12 (middle & high) school. Baylor University is in Waco, TX.

We are asked this question a lot. We know the gallons per hour consumption. At Freebird’s slow cruising speed of 8.5 to 9 mph (depends on wind, waves and current) she uses about 6 gallons per hour. At Freebird’s fast cruising speed of 23 to 24 mph she uses about 35 gallons per hour. We could figure the mpg but it’s so low we rather not know.😁
