Starlink Internet - 6 Months Later...Do We Like It?
After installing Starlink internet in the summer, we revisit the service and detail the pros and cons of the system. Starlink is becoming widespread available throughout the country (& world), so we thought 6 months of use was sufficient time to review the system.

Good, responsible, unbiased opinion. Thank you Ed. I know of another con that I haven't heard ANYONE list. Shared IP numbers. This where the ISP, Starlink in this case, share the same IP number up between several (many?) users. If a user wanted to log into their home network from outside, IE Wide Area Network or WAN, for the purposes of checking their security camera or pulling a file from a home PC, with Starlink they cannot do that. There are cloud=based solutions but that's another story and will cost more. Also for gamers, (you don't strike me as a gamer Ed :-) a shared IP is not the best for some games or a Playstation PS4 or PS5. Not sure why but my son tells me so. The other issue with Starlink is the cost of its mesh WiFi extenders. it's too late for you Ed but anyone else considering extending their WiFi around a big home or on multiple floors, etc they should purchase the Starlink Ethernet adapter then bypass the Starlink router (it's in the app) then connect your own good quality router that may all by itself supply sufficient signal for your house BUT with your own router you can use cheaper extenders as and where needed and don't cost a whole lot of dollars either. With your own router you can also fiddle with lots of switches that can make your signal even better, dodge channel clashes for one and far easier to hook up cameras into the barn, henhouse, front gate, or whatever. So that's what I will be doing. To get a static IP you could pay for a dirt cheap service that has a static IP option and bond it to your Starlink service inside a dual WAN router. That way you get a static IP and the benefits of it for not much more money. Just a thought. Thaks for your video Mr Nyberg. Appreciate the honesty; a rare thing these days, especially on the internet.

I travel a lot for work, and also don't understand tech very well. I'm looking into starlink because the internet in my rural area is horrible. Are you saying that you shouldn't have video doorbells synced with starlink? Or are you saying starlink won't connect to them? Being away from home I check my cameras frequently, but my current internet is so slow my playback is buffered.
Ordered starlink today. Thank you for sharing your experience!

It was a life saver for me. The best internet I could get locally was 30mbs for $100 a month. I was lucky to get 2 mb of it most of the time. This was such a game changer for me. If my wife was ever streaming something it would cripple whatever I was doing (gaming). Now I never even notice if she's streaming.

Thank you for the review. When nothing else is available & we're paying over $400 a month for Direct TV & ViaSat, this is a no brainer for us. It'll pay for itself in less than 3 months. I purchased 2 days ago when it finally became available for us. Just hope it works because we do have around 3 to 5% obstruction. We bought the pole too to get it a little higher.

Thank you for this honest review. I am in a remote area as well in Central Wisconsin. What I was most concerned was the reliability of the network. Because I work in IT is will still have to have DSL as back up but you answered my worries of uptime and outage resolution times. As the person in the pinned comment stated the shared IP might be worrisome for security camera access but I can do without. In addition for other nerds you can purchase the Ethernet adapter and bypass the Starlink router to use your own device and utilize a cheaper mesh option if you choose. The “bypass router” is available in the app so no additional networking knowledge is needed to execute this optional setup.

Hi Jason, thanks for the comment! Good router information, Starlink has made it less difficult to order other mesh systems, and they are a lot cheaper. I just decided to go with their system because I also wanted to give a review on how well it works. So far, it has worked well. I am happy with the reliability, I too work from home in online marketing and needed a reliable system. I also have a backup system, I use a Verizon MiFi. I can see the cell tower from my house, so it is an adequate backup. So far though, I haven't needed it yet. Good luck with the Starlink system if you choose to go that route!

Great question, should have mentioned that. The only service interruption that I've noticed is when we get a severe thunderstorm. We don't usually experience many of those up in N. MI. What we do get is a lot of cloudy days, pretty much all winter long. During this period, I haven't noticed any decrease in speeds or connectivity. I hope this helps!!

Thanks and correct one information that, 150Mbps is Mega bit per second, while not Mega Byte per second. We(engineers) always use lower case "b" to stand bits, while upper case "B" bytes. 1 Bytes = 8 bits ISP always love bigger performance number to make people happy(every body love big number). So 150M bit/second = 18.75M Byte/second, and ISP definitely choose 150 number.

Hello there! I always love my Iowa visits. My good friend does the Raigbrai every year.
We are on the wait list after exhausting all other options in are area. Options are available but no room to expand their current system and no dates for new towers going up. We were told next summer for Starlink. What mesh system did you install? We bought Google's system (it was on sale) and it made the world of difference within the home and around the property with the lousy internet connection we have, very slow speed.
@UpNorthNybergs
Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you are waiting...you will like this system and it is worth the wait. The Mesh system I got was from Starlink (Mesh Nodes), I have seen others use a cheaper setup (KZread has videos) versus going with Starlink, but I figured it would be less of a hassle to go with a system that was designed to work well together. I don't think it is too difficult to use another Mesh system. Thanks for watching and good luck!

I just received my approved purchase for the system in my area. I have 7 days to decide to buy or not. One question, do you have to run an ethernet cable to the starlink stand / antenna back into your house to the router? Or, can you connect the antenna to the router wirelessly? I'm a bit confused on that part. Thanks
@UpNorthNybergs

Good question! Unfortunately, you do have to run the cable from the Starlink “dish” back to the router. It wasn’t too difficult, just takes a bit of time. Obviously the closer to the router the better. Good luck!!

With only the router how many devices you think can be covered with decent signal?
@UpNorthNybergs
7 ай бұрын
Dang, that’s a good question…it really depends on where the devices are located throughout the house. If they are close by you could handle quite a few, say 10 or more. Of course, all those devices will be using their share of the bandwidth.

Is it allowed to make hotspot from StarLink and share Internet with neighbours?
@UpNorthNybergs
10 ай бұрын
That’s a real good question…I believe it would work. Neighbors need to be very close to the router… I’m sure it is against Starlink’s terms of service though.

They are frickin awful. I literally have more than 80 messages back and forth with them. My service worked from August 2022 til mid December 2022. I could use it for five months before it went down completely. It was great when it worked. But once it went down it wouldn't work anymore no matter what was tried. I tried for three months to get it to work. messaging them back and forth, back and forth, sending equipment back and forth, back and forth. I finally gave up and cancelled the service in April and they billed me for the months that it wasn't usable. I negotiated two months service refund ($135 X 2) and a $250 equipment refund but I have yet to receive it. They have told me three times that they would send it to me, but I haven't received it. That's been since April. Absolutely Insane. Absolutely insane.
