    If your focus is profit, it is absolutely not worth paying the wages as you can cash in on the short term gains, then bail out and let the country eat the cost of the issues. This is how corporations have worked for decades, strategically designed to screw Americans while benefiting a select amount of execs and specific shareholders. You don’t get to stay in the 1% by having morals or ethics, after all.

    Here’s the problem. And it’s the same problem with Boeings KC-46 Aerial Tanker program for the Air Force. Awhile back, after years of massive cost overruns in defense and aerospace programs Congress dropped the hammer. Contracts would be issued as fixed cost contracts. That means you the vendor WILL deliver the contracted product at the price you quoted. And you the contractor will eat the overruns (with a handful,of exceptions). Boeing being Boeing just assumed this was normal political theater. And surely nobody would hold them to this. Because that’s just not how these things work. So they got the Starliner contract. At twice what SpaceX got. They got the KC-46, beating out Airbus. And Boeing being Boeing, the contracted money ran out years ago. But suddenly the Fed’s aren’t just giving them more. Boeing has to fund the extra testing, the R&D, everything, to get these projects to completion. Boeing execs don’t like this. So they are trying to spend the absolute minimum they can to just fulfill the contracts hanging over their heads, while not triggering the massive penalties for failure to deliver. The KC-46 is a great example. It’s the replacement to the aging KC-135. Which is a 707 airframe with a tanker conversion. The KC-46 is just a 767 with a tanker conversion. They’ve been working on this for 10 years. It should have taken them 2. Starliner same deal. At this point the Boeing CEO knows Starliner is a failed program. It’s dead as soon as this capsule lands. But so long as the ship meets all of the contract requirements and is certified, they don’t care if NASA buys more. A safe landing is just to avoid massive penalties and their stock cratering.

  • @mikeking596
    @mikeking59614 күн бұрын

    Minor nits and extra details. It's United Launch Alliance (ULA) not United Rocket Alliance (3:57). Also, it's a fixed price contract, so they were not give $4.2 billion on day one. They get 'small' payments as they achieve goals. They have still not finished and gotten all the money. Boeing says they have spent more, but Boeing has to pay that (not the government). SpaceX was awarded $2.6 billion (same deal). The contract also includes 6 flights to the ISS. The idea being they will alternate with Dragon which has already complete all 6 of their original contract and NASA has purchased more. With the ISS being scheduled to be shutdown in 2030 (6 years from now) and there being two crew flights per year (one each for Boeing and SpaceX), Boeing will be lucky to complete it's 6 flights prior to the ISS going away. The Boeing capsule has also only been certified to fly on the Atlas 5 rocket.... that is no longer being made. They have reserved enough rockets to complete the 6 flights, but would need to re-certify on another rocket to do more.

    Well stated. Lots of kudos to the script team for keeping the tone even handed, which frankly I could NOT have managed. If Boeing gets its act together (or should I say, if its board of directors gets their collective heads out of their butts), perhaps Starliner will achieve its ambitions. I do hope so. Just as you say, such success would be a win for EVERYONE. Even Musk wins, because stronger competition means he has to stop diddling Twitter and get back to Space X. I will say that the design makes sense - they're clearly going back to the Apollo crew module in certain ways, and I can't say I blame them for not spending time on aesthetics. I really believe the designers and engineers have worked hard and honestly. It's just their bosses that've screwed things up over and over.

    The opening is throwing me off when the video is showing both a Vulcan and a Saturn rocket, while the narration accurately says it was an Atlas V. It's "United LAUNCH Alliance (ULA)", not "Rocket". Also on that note, while the Atlas V is currently run by ULA, which was formed (due to a complicated legal mess, to put it mildly) by merging the launch divisions of Boeing and Lockheed Martin, the Atlas V was developed by LM prior to the merger and was NOT a joint venture. Boeing's rocket was the Delta IV family. Sidenote that as of the merger the Atlas III and Delta II rockets were also contributed to ULA by their respective parent companies.

    The Starliner is intended to be reusable, like Dragon. Unlike Dragon, some of the vital hardware is located in its disposable service module (the Dragon has a cheap, disposable trunk for carrying cargo). This might be the result of engineering compromises, but it's a ridiculous waste of money to manufacture.

  • @okankyoto

    It should really be noted that Crew Dragon also suffered similar leaks and thruster failures during its demo missions. They are mentioned in the post flight info but SpaceX doesn't do press conferences about them. This is why NASA isn't very concerned- they expected this to happen on most demo flights and similar issues will probably arise with DreamChaser in the near future. The more data they gather in orbit, the better the next SM will be. Especially since they've reactivate all but 1 (out of 28) thrusters that failed off because the redline was set too low. Now that they've recalibrated, it all works as advertised. Its kind of sad how the media has leapt on this in it a unusual way trying to claim the astronauts are "stranded" when they just haven't decided on a return date yet and done the checklist. (This is why its cleared for emergency return)

    Another brilliant episode of Astrographics, one may even say a bit spicy! So, Simon, where's our map of the known cosmos? Inquiring minds would like to know? Fill us in on the Bootes Void and the Laniakea Supercluster, - tell us why we keep getting science headlines about the Local Group being in a void, and what's going on with the Big Ring? Where are we in all of this?

    Even with SpaceX's development problems, it's amazing that they've left Boeing in the dust regarding reliability with their Dragon. I wonder if it's more than just management issues at Boeing but a fundamental naiveté with spacecraft design at Boeing that somehow SpaceX was able to sidestep in a quicker fashion.

    Starliner can easly get down from the iss. There resson there not going down is that there is an issue on the service module which is the part that decouples from the capsule and burns up in the atmosphere, they want to take the opertinity to find out whats casing the issue so when the service module burns up, they know whats to do on the next flight
