Stark Varg First Ride Impressions

My first ride on the new Stark Varg! Best thing I can say is it's very easy to jump on and feel comfortable right away. The steering feel stood out to me as the Varg effortlessly changed direction on the track or trails. The weight (about 263 lbs) feels centered on the chassis. I rode 30/40/45/55 hp power levels…45hp was my favorite though I wanted to try 80hp! Similar to other electric bikes when the rear tire looses traction the motor (and rear tire) spins up quickly. There is no traction control yet but the throttle/motor response is tunable (according to the Stark rep). KYB suspension had a 200 lb moto rider setting was controlled and absorbing/plus on track and felt more compliant than expected on the trails (clickers were opened a little over stock). Brembo brakes felt strong. As I first noted while riding the bike nothing really stood out - in a good way! The footpeg/seat/handlebar ergos felt great. The seat/tank (upper frame is probably a better description) is narrow but again did not stand out while riding. The electric power is so tunable. The stealth factor is fun - hearing the rear tire claw for traction. Quiet riding in the woods. No oil changes (other than reduction gearbox 150cc's of oil every 40 hours), no mixing gas/oil, no air cleaners, easy to clean up...just lube the chain, charge the battery, and ride!
Looking forward to more rides on the Varg soon!

Biggest problem I can see for off-road riding is range and changing. The OWR enduro last weekend was just over 100mi. Hopefully the battery technology improves over the next few years.

Yes battery energy density is about 185Wh/kg and that is the limiting factor for dirt bikes...need more energy density to get the range up for longer rides away from your truck or charger! If you can live with about 2~3 hours ride time (depending on power/hills/rider weight/etc) the electric Varg can offer a unique off road riding experience

Dang! So what was the ETA of your Varg? How long before that ETA did Varg contact you for final full payment? I think the latest ETA for my Varg order is 10/31/23 so I am curious when to expect the final payment is due notice.

@@mxengineer1 my ETA has said 8/31 for a long time now. The email came saying my varg was ready for production. I paid immediately hoping it might scoot me to the front. That was 3 weeks ago. The email indicated that it would be ready to ship in “a few weeks” and that they would contact me to finalize shipping and delivery details when the time comes. They haven’t done anything wrong, and still on track for timing as far as I know…I’m just so tired of waiting haha.

I saw in an ebike enthusiast review that the 80ph is supposedly the most energy efficient setting. I guess b/c you don't have to wind the motor as much? but I cannot imagine running 80hp on the trail. I almost killed myself trying to race a CR 500 on a motocross track. not exactly apples to apples but oye! I wouldn't trust myself in tight trails with 80hp and instant (no curve) delivery. 😅

@@daneg Yes there are different efficiencies for a given motor running at various power levels - not sure about the Varg motor. The Varg electric motor does make a lot of torque instantly so very responsive!

Yes! Coming up a little short and with no engine/exhaust noise it is very easy to hear other things like the rear tire clawing for traction and the suspension thud when landing from jumps. The KYB suspension felt impressive though - absorbing and controlled

I've been watching as many of these Varg videos as possible, and that fact stands out every time. you hear EVERYTHING. stuff that your engine noise/vibration mask that happen a dozen times every lap now sticks out like a fire alarm. so surreal. it must feel like you're abusing your bike. I imagine myself looking down to find what piece of the bike just fell off every other landing.

Do you reckon it's easier or harder to ride on medium to tight-ish mid west single track than a modern 250/300 2 stroke ? Having a hard time imagining a 260lb bike stopping / turning & doing it for a couple house with wearing one down substantially more than if on a 250/300. What say you ?

I've done a lot of back to back rides with my KTM Freeride EXC back to back with my 300 2-strokes and 350 4-strokes. Consider the Freeride EXC has street legal trials tires (the front one with 1500 miles use), only 9" of trail riding setting suspension, 24 hp and 31 ft-lbs of torque and weighs 245 lbs....and was able to match the lap times of my 23 TX300 and 21 KR350...all (3) bikes within 0.1 secs lap time....I think a Varg with full on knobbies and better brakes and more power could be faster? Electric is just throttle and brakes and if you have a left hand brake you can focus your feet on loading and weight the bike. I think electric might be an interesting option in the woods - range will be the biggest issue...recent gas vs electric back to back. kzread.info/dash/bejne/daum2qh_k5DKj8o.html

The Stark is such a different ride experience. The lack of inertia gives the Varg almost 125 like turning agility. Yet there is 263 lbs of motorcycle beneath you so there is a sense of mass. No clutch, no shifting, no heat, no vibration, little noise, and almost no maintenance...think about a bike that can have 80hp or dialed back to 10 hp to introduce your friends to motorcycle riding or putting around the neighborhood or sneaking around in the woods....that is what the Varg is about. @@adamrochester1
