Egyptian Mythology and Sci-Fi... Well here's a fun one for you. Many of H R Giger's designs, including the 'Alien' movies monster, was inspired by ancient Egyptian death motifs. For example the elongated head of the 'Alien' monster is believed to be inspired by Nefertiti's headdress. The black protruding bones of the 'Alien' are supposedly also inspired by Ancient Egypt. Apparently when he was only 5 years old, he was trapped alone in an Ancient Egypt exhibit at a museum with the blackened bones of a mummy encased in glass.

Let's clear up a few mistakes in your understanding: - Colonel O'Neil may be somewhat suicidal because of what happened with his kid, but he's still a military man defending his country/planet first. So, he's going to do the mission, and is willing to die for it. - Ra is not a woman. That's a guy. He has some very effeminate features. - Ra is not an actual god. Just an alien who was able to transfer themselves into a human body. The ease of repair makes it so they can live in them almost indefinitely. - Ra is actually the aliens name. When he came to earth he touted himself as a god (and with his advanced tech, the primitive society would believe it). Thus Egyptian mythology was created around aliens pretending to be gods. (Bonus with only a tiny spoiler from SG-1: Egyptian mythology isn't the only mythology created around an alien race. WATCH THE SHOW)

Ra is Ra. The Egyptian god Ra was supposedly based on him, not the other way around, that was the point. Also he didn't had supernatural powers. He had a spaceship, a fancy dress and gadgets like the one used to fry brains (basically the same Joker has). Regarding an earlier comment, they wouldn't have "GTFOd instead of going exploring", they literally had to find the coordinates to return to Earth.

  • @AltCutTV

Nah, he probably just built a giant pyramid shaped spaceship all on his own after seeing the pyramids. 😼 Jokes aside, whatever origin logic the creator of the film had intended it was likely based on a comic about aliens actually looking like, and probably being, these gods. Not just one of them, but the whole gang is stranded on Earth in their pyramid spaceship for some reason. That too was made into a film. Not sure I'd recommend it, but it was visually interesting and at least somewhat representative for the source anyway. "Immortel, ad vitam"

Eric Avari is a supporting actor. In addition to playing Sharee's father he also appeared as the librarian in Brendan Frasier's The Mummy alongside Rachel Weisz. 😂 The symbol on Daniel Jackson's necklace is the Eye of Ra, the sun god. The Egyptian god in a tomb suit is a Jaffa. They are the warriors used as cannon fodder by the Goa'uld. The Goa'uld are alien parasites that possess host bodies in their conquest of other worlds using both the Stargate portal network and their own starships. The sarcophagus technology The Goa'uld use to prolong their lives and to heal any injury also affects them in a negative fashion. I got to see some of the costumes up close as well as behind the scenes stills for the Stargate Movie. The studios often use San Diego Comic Con to promote new movies or tv shows. 😂 You should give the pilot for SG-1 - Children of the gods - a view just to have a taste of the show based on the movie. 😂

They made a bunch of changes for the show: - Instead of being in a distant galaxy, Abydos is actually fairly close to Earth. - Ra wasn’t humanoid. They’re actually snake-like parasites. - Pretty much everyone just speaks English in the show to avoid wasting valuable episode time on linguistics. The alien language was simplified to just a few words and phrases. - The Jaffa (alien warriors) now wear full body armor to avoid showing blood when they get shot. Sparks from bullet impacts are more rating-friendly

The Stargate storyline did have potential and that gave birth to the highly successful Stargate SG-1 TV series (10 seasons) and its spinoffs: Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, plus the animated Stargate Infinity. As for Kurt Russell, he was was a child actor that became a teen heartthrob for Disney with films like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969), Now You See Him, Now You Don’t (1972), and The Strongest Man in the World (1975). He then transformed into an action star beginning with his iconic role in John Carpenter’s Escape from New York (1981). Needless to say, Russell is a diverse and quite a talented actor. He’s had a really successful career. I’d recommend the aforementioned Escape from New York, Silkwood (1983), Tequila Sunrise (1988), Tango & Cash (1989), Backdraft (1991), Captain Ron (1992), Tombstone (1993), and Executive Decision (1996). I think the earliest film I remember James Spader in was Tuff Turf (1985) with a very young Robert Downey, Jr., and Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) star, Kim Richards. He then went on to do Pretty in Pink (1986) with everybody’s teen crush, Molly Ringwald. He then did Mannequin (1987) with Kim Cattrall. But his breakout role was in Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), which was also a breakout role for his costar, Andie MacDowell.

Its really no different than Star Trek The Next Generation, that show like SG1 took time to find their footing and then they took off running. Today too many shows end up getting cancelled before they get a real chance at finding their footing. Like SGU, it got cancelled after season 2 because viewership dropped 25% but most of that was cause they switched the time slot on sci-fy from friday to tuesday. Kind of like Star Trek Enterprise, I loved the series but it got canned in season 4 after years of dropping viewership this show they tried to play it safe and dragging the story out too much. The show actually got interesting in season 4 as things were progressing quickly and there was rumors that season 5 would see the NX class starship get a refit making it look more like traditional federation ships with the large secondary hull with a neck connecting to the saucer section. This show failed for a reason and it wasnt because it wasnt given time to find its footing, it never found its footing till it was announced it was to be cancelled and then they started throwing all this content into the season that progressed the story quicker than they were.

The slow pacing was because of the nature of the story. We are getting slow reveals, letting us know what the deal is with this Stargate thing. Stargate was one of the first movies I can remember seeing in the cinema as a kid (my parents took me to see others before that, but they were usually boring so I don't remember them). It blew my mind that there could be aliens with advanced technology, who could travel across the galaxy, and who came to Earth in ancient times and took people away to be their slaves and etc., and I just thought the story was pretty cool. But more importantly, it made me think about those other sci-fi movies I'd watched before, made me think of them in a new light, and made me want to watch more sci-fi movies, read sci-fi books. Basically, this is the movie that got me hooked on sci-fi. And then a few years later I heard a rumour somewhere that they were making a Stargate TV series, which I watched religiously when it finally came on TV, and that's been my favourite TV series of all time. Highly recommended if you've got a spare couple of years to watch all the episodes of all the seasons and spin-offs.

The intros for movies in different eras are usually due to whatever agreement the studios and the SAG union (Screen Actors Guild) etc have in place at that point. For instance, there might an agreement today whereby credits can be shown only at the end of the movie....or the rule might be that a certain type of credits must be displayed at the beginning of the movie. The intros usually have nothing to do with artistic expression....the types of intros are usually due to whatever agreement is in place between the workers' union and the movie studios. And as those agreements are oftentimes re-negotiated every few years, you will see intro credits change in movies/TV shows ever so often to reflect whatever agreement was in place at that time.
