It’s explained by the introduction of the ORI aka the Ancients greatest enemy from their original home world. Not only would the ancients using their power in mass (like wiping out the wraiths) alert the ORI but it would also make the Ancients just like the Ori (aka acting like Gods). Not to mention when you have a society where everybody is basically immortal your viewpoint changes as thousands of years is a blink of an eye for you and as a result political change comes extremely slowly if ever. The Ancients were already nice enough to hide the Milky Way galaxy from the ORI to prevent their invasion until SG-1 screwed that up and revealed it’s existence.

Random theory, What if the ancients noticed him about to ascend and asked themselves if they really wanted to put up with a superhuman ascended Mckay. He does say 3:30 That an impossible answer came out of nowhere. I get the feeling that was a favor from the ancients who wanna help humans and waited until contact could be made with him on their .03 hertz wavelength. "HE" Went into their world, No reason they can't tell him how to GTFO!

I base this on Daniel Jacksons time when he finds out Anubis was ther already. If they could choose who would be accepted,, I dont think Anubis would be even close to that place

@@ShrekWallBee They didnt kick him out. They might just gave him access to the solution. HE WANTED THE SOLUTION, he got his solution, told Carsen, got the fuck out before his body died. Rodney said he doesnt want to ascend, its just a means to an end. He only tried to ascend so that he can retake human form without instead of dying and game over. This hypothesis here makes a lot of sense actually.

I loathed Rodney in SG1 honestly, but he grew to be one of my favorites in this series because of his character growth. I think it was because in sg1 he was more of an outsider being an independent contractor and with Atlantis he became part of a family by being a team player. He needed people to be with that loved and respected him, kept him level headed, and humble.

As stated by Anubis the ascended Ancients and Others can't help a lesser ascend. Ain't nothing in the rules about "Here's how you DON'T Ascend. Thank you for choosing not to annoy/spend time with us."

The one time The Others in that diner spoke up and interfered. “Somebody please tell this man how to get better so he doesn’t come here!”

It is hard to determine if he would interfere or not. Not that he does not care about his friends but he knows the rules and he loves the power and ego boost of having the full knowledge of the ancients. I love the concept of ascension because it is like the Buddhist philosophy of enlightenment and it provides an idea of what it means to be a god.

I think him not ascending was more a head-off by the writers. There were already a lot of parallels between Atlantis and SG-1, so to have one of the main cast members as end like Daniel did (dying because of alien tech, and ascending rather than just being killed off), I think people would have started crying out about how the two shows were becoming too similar.

I feel I may have missed this episode... I didnt think I had missed any... REWATCH TIME!

The way I see it, while it's true that most of the people who used the device died without ascending most of those were people who had already tried to ascend and failed. There was a lot of selection bias involved in those numbers while Mckay was a clean slate.

Partially yes although the main problem the device tries to address is a lack of physical ascention comparability which is not necessarily indicative of a mental incompatibility so the bias is not that big.

@@victorselve8349 I mean, they used the machine knowing they were more likely to die than ascend. The fact that most of them failed is a testament to the fact that being advanced alone isn't enough to ascend. Clearly they were desperate.

Nice how he almost ascends, just as 3.14 is a nice approximation of pi.

Dr. Weir asked what the chances were it would make Rodney more pleasant. Ironically it actually did.

I still can't believe they cancelled this show. And there hasn't been anything good on TV ever since.

Oof, not far wrong. After Stargate wore out its welcome and Atlantis got really good (and cancelled) there was never anything quite like them ever again. The world has kinda sucked ever since.

Lieutenant Reginald Barclay(of the UF Starfleet) once became quite possibly the most advanced Human in their present day twenty-fourth century era. The writers of Atlantis must've got the idea for "The Tao of Rodney" from Star Trek: TNG episode "The Nth Degree".

I pity the Ancients. Rodney'll drive them all bonkers! Them poor misbegotten fellows!

A. I think the Ancients would've kicked him out if he had reached that state. B. It sure would've been convenient if he had completed, you know, anything or at least had given others explanations or left some notes that would be decipherable by normal people. One huge thing, how to make ZPM's. Or, at least the starting grounds where it takes the season or into the next one and then it's difficult to do, but still possible?

Granted, I think plenty of things would be outside of humanities understanding for the time being, but I think plenty of other things would be understandable with some explanation and I would think the ancients would be very much so able to explain things.

he can try that device again and again and solve the zpms problems. he can avoid ascension, he can avoid the ascended beings. he made a jumper open a hyperspace window, he can do many things. that device is stupid in all ways and makes a plothole in the story.

Here's what I would have liked to see. Remember Oberoth and the Asurans? Basically they were like the ancient Atlanteans, only they were actually replicators. They used all the Atlantean technology and could even make their own ZPM's. Very important allies if you could manage that. The Asurans were upset because the Atlaneans ascended and left them behind. They wanted to ascend too, but were unable. Tell the Asurans that there is an ascension machine and one of the Earth people nearly ascended. Then tell them that you'd like to try to get some Asurans to ascend. Maybe start with 10 volunteers and a couple of observers. If it worked at all, the Asurans would be overjoyed. And maybe they'd be willing to share some of their awesome tech and ZPM production facilities with the Earthers.

Jokes aside, the Ancients wouldn't actually have sent him back. The rules are already ascended beings helping mortals to ascend. McKay accidentally came across the Lantean machine, i.e mortal technology, and reached the mental state by himself. I don't remember how the rules worked with Merlin but I think he theoretically could have ascended then de-ascended with all/most of his knowledge intact.

Ancients: Another human wants to ascend from earth...NOPE NOPE remember that last time??? nope...

Sooo... why don't they all just use the device to advance for however long you get before going downhill the fix themselves and repeat the process?

Would have been awesome if McKay did Ascend and then an hour later the Others kick him out of their club in disgust.

One thing I don't understand about SG1 and Atlantis, is how ascension isn't as big a deal as it would reasonably be. Basically, this is life after death with really strong anecdotal and scientific evidence. I don't see how the people who were aware of this didn't put at least some effort at ascending themselves. I mean, if a good friend died, ascended, visited me while on an elevator, and really helped me out on a project, I would have developed some interest in ascending myself to avoid dying myself.

@@nihilityjoey It's not beyond them seeing as Daniel Jackson was able to ascend without any upgrades to his physiology. On the other hand, why would someone try to ascend? To ascend you have to remove every negative thought and your own ego, among other things. And what do you get in return? You exist as a near godlike being with so many rules and restrictions that you cannot interfere with the living in *any* way. You also can't do much else. You basically gain the Knowledge of the Universe and are forbidden from doing anything with it. You just sit on your ass for all eternity, being a observer at best. Just look how incredibly frustrated Daniel Jackson got with being ascended, so much so that he got kicked out twice! And all he wanted to do was fix the mess other ascended created, a mess that threatened a entire Galaxy.

What if he went up in flames and #descended

If an arrogant person like Rodney can ascend, anyone can.

Well, you can't do that. They don't "stop" the evolution, they revert (or rather overwrite) his current DNA with the one he had before he used the device. If you mean why didn't they use blood samples from when he was evolving already... Well, from what I understand, the device rigged his body to evolve forward until it reaches ascension. If you used samples from after the device was used, you would effectively just be rolling him back to a point, but he would still keep evolving. I suppose in theory, you could do regular therapies to keep rolling him back (eg. roll him back to 70% ascension, wait to 80%, roll him back to 70% and just keep repeating that every couple days).

Just ask yourself if YOU were ascended would you really want to have Rodney join you for eternity and have to listen to the constant blabber?

Too bad McKay sister was not there too.

Jackson ascended with help of Oma, he had choice between being ascended or dead, McKay had a chance to ascend with help of technology, he could have been ascended but he also had a choice to come back to normal life. These cases dont proove any of them being better than the other one
