    Was about to say that sounds like a very good plot for a game or movie. You are off mining, peaceful life, everything planned out, when suddenly FBI agents come out of the blue, tell you do this or we sentence you to this crime you totally committed. Then you proceed with the story, find your impersonator, proof your innocense. But will you end up a law abiding citizen by the end, or, havingving tasted the abyss, decided to stay there? Both ends are corrupt anyway right (wrongful encarceration vs actual crime)?

    I actually had the same exact experience. So I reloaded a save and discovered I had picked up an illegal drug whale looting a pirate base, and security noticed it when I entered New Atlantis. Hilarious, the first thing the military wanted me to do was deliver some of the same drugs to a known pirate associate. Which actually made scenes.

    When I told my roommate about how I stole a ship from some pirates and then that mission started when I was caught with their contraband, he asked me if that was the main quest. He was quite surprised when I told him that no, it was just some random side quest I was forced into.

    honestly this game would've been great if they'd gone that route. i mean if they wanted to throw in some procedurally generated ones as well fine, but what bethesda does best imo is making you want to explore around and just check out whatever that next location is coming up on your compass. Im enjoying starfield overall but it's their weakest (non-76) game imo because they've removed the primary thing most people seem to agree they do great. A game with 5-10 planets that are all like 1/4 the size of skyrim's map alongside another 50-100 procedurally generated ones to make the universe feel like a big space adventure would've been incredible imo. Granted it took them 8 years to make this so maybe that was too much to ask, maybe now that they've got the tech down if/when there's a starfield 2 they'll do something like that

    The funny thing is that quest to infiltrate the criminal organization is probably the best quest in the game. What I've realized about starfield is that it does a horrible job of directing you to its most interesting parts. None of the main story makes you deal with any of the factions in any meaningful way. The moment I knew they really fucked up was when I joined the United Colonies which is basically the space government. Completely optional btw and the introduction of the mission explains all the important historical moments since humans left earth. It's actually kind of interesting and makes the world make a lot more sense but none of it is touched on in the main story. While you will get an offer to join the UC during the main story the game doesn't explain that there are literally no downsides to it so the average player will be hesitant to join BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW TWO SHITS ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE FACTION OR THE WORLD WHICH THEY WOULD LEARN ABOUT IF THEY ACTUALLY JOINED THE FACTION.

    I think that is the whole point. At that time, if you have Sam as your companion, he will tell you that all of those things UC said are propaganda. And semi-spoiler: the first time you play the game blindly, it will have a greater impact on your NG+ because now you know everything and which path you should actually take for yourself. And yes, NG+ is canon.

  • @gilsercrow3590

    @gilsercrow3590

    @DraconicA5 I'm on new game plus and no you don't know which path to take because once again the main story hardly teaches you anything about the lore of the world except at the very end and even then it's not something that matters to the rest of the people in that world. Things like learning about the colony war, the terramorph attacks, the house of Vaarun. That's all things that you could learn about in a quick summary when you join the UC but it's completely optional and since you don't ever learn a thing about the UC in the main story you aren't incentived to join. I haven't finished all the side content but I assume the propaganda part is obviously how UC portrays themselves as the good guys against Freestar but that's pretty obvious. Even if they're posing themselves as the good guys you still get learn about the war, how there were fucking mechs, about certain treaties that all make the world make way more sense but starfield does a terrible job of leading you towards this content.

    I think the problem is Elder Scrolls. They do the same thing there to one extent or another in every game. Those games take place in a setting where history is... I'll say unreliable. Everyone has been lying for so long noone knows the facts and some godlike beings probably deleted a few sections for unknown reasons. Oh, and there's a civilization of super wizards somewhere that seem to mess with things just for giggles sometimes. Everything is in this chaotic jumble of what may have happened and what may be true by design. We aren't supposed to trust the world of Elder Scrolls. Bethesda keeps designing every game off that template, but Fallout and Starfield are not Tamriel. They've clearly understood settings. There's no sense of getting a look at the secret way the world works with every faction, even if it's just a god was bored so did a thing. So why explore them. We know what the factions are.

    I've been playing it for about 20 hours now, and though I keep coming back to it because I want to get what's good out of it, I agree that so much of it is just plain boring. On the good side, some of the characters (including those on the main quest) are genuinely deep and interesting. The major cities are varied and beautifully detailed. The ships are amazing on the inside and the ability to design your own ship is quite rewarding. The skins and other textures are amazing, including the faces (minus the god-awful hair textures) and the clothing. The lock picking mini game which finally takes a new and interesting spin on lock picking with a puzzle that's both challenging and fairly quick to solve without getting screwed over by random chance. On the meh side is the gun play which is marred by enemies that can't shoot, enemies that have a million hit points, a cover system that is inconsistent and too subtle, and guns that all kind of feel the same. The facial animations which show so much potential in little details and then suddenly fall flat by missing basic key behaviours that any artist or animator would know about. The main story line that both has some very interesting characters/dialog/missions/puzzles/lore, while simultaneously having some extremely boring and banal characters/dialog/missions/puzzle/lore. And of course, the UI. At once both subtle and intrusive; clean and indiscernible. Some parts work really well, but then several other parts are missing or difficult to read or use. Inventory management is a pain. XP and level up banners pop up in your face obscuring your view mid-fight. Basic information like your weight and encumbrance are buried deep in menus while ambient air temperature and pressure is given a dedicated place in the UI that's pointed out by the tutorial! On the awful side are the planets that are just never ending jungles of bumpy terrain, a few flora/fauna, and the same six random encounters. The quest system whereby you are often not given enough information to find people or places, but are instead given quest markers directly in your face, including a path that lights up on the ground telling you exactly where to walk. The map system that looks fancy but hides all of the important data. You don't have any kind of a meaningful map while in a city - not even the info terminals dotted around the city will actually show you a map! The local maps are this weird dotted landscape with no landmarks, only fast travel markers. The star maps don't show you any relevant details until you zoom into each planet one at a time, and you can't even get a list of known places and the landmarks they have - you need to navigate to each planet in each system one at a time to be reminded of what was there. The crafting system that has way too many random items, most of which are useless but every now and then are essential, and require pumping most of your skill points into skills that let you make customizations to your items that aren't even as good as the ones you'll already have on randomly dropped items. The food items that give you 5 health on your 200 point health bar, to the point that you would need to carry 40kg of food just to heal up after one fight. The vendors whose limited cash-on-hand prevents you from actually unloading all the crap you pick up, and makes absolutely no sense in a world of universal communication and digital currency. Your followers who will run blindly into combat the second you aggro someone, despite you intentionally staying hidden and sneaking. The "space powers" you unlock with the main quest, that are literally force word powers from Skyrim, only without the shouting, and many of them don't provide any tangible benefit. The horribly unoptimized engine that requires a brand new video card to be half-ways playable, while simultaneously having horribly low-res textures in some stand-out places (esp. hair). The control scheme that screams, "This is a port of a console game to PC so controllers come first and keyboard and mouse are an afterthought". The "stolen" item system where items are marked stolen regardless of whether or not anyone is aware that you have stolen them - including generic, every day items like prepackaged foods and ammunition - which largely undermines the purpose of trying to steal in the first place. The "bounty" system where you will be hunted by half the galaxy until you can find a quiet place to find one of the ubiquitous terminals that allow you to pay off your bounty - including the ones stationed in the very same cities that would arrest you for having a bounty (so you can't pay your bounty, unless you can sneak past the guards to access the machine they gave you to pay off your bounty?!). But perhaps worst of all is how it's all so reminiscent of Skyrim in all the best and worst ways. It shows such possibility and brilliance, just like some of the grand and imaginative things in Skyrim, while still managing to be as broken and janky as Skyrim was. It follows such a similar story line, just this time it's in space. It has all the same promise while still failing in all the same ways. Except it's 20 years later and they should have this shit figured out by now. It's disappointing specifically because this would have been impressive 20 years ago, but everyone else has gotten better at this while Bethesda is just stuck where they are.

I am not talking full space Sim too, I am okay with fast travel for say major hubs. Imagine swinging by a moon, scanning it, spotting a POI, charting a course to land, spotting it as you got closer, and then actually putting your ship near it. This would make it actually feel like a space game rather than a menu Sim.

I accidentally made an enemy out of the Freestar because I got mixed up in a large dogfight and grazed their ship. Normally in BGS titles it's a slight annoyance if you do that, and "yielding" functions as an apology, but once a grazed their ship I couldn't "yield" or "hail" them to say "Sorry, didn't realize you where not the enemy since a ship was behind you putting the marker above your head" Fortunately I had a save to fall back on, but I have encountered a couple things like that under normal gameplay that for all the QA they did I am surprised to see, but nothing that has totally ruined my experience.
