Don't forget that backgrounds have conversation choices for having them. For example, the mission to save the freighter for that minimart on Mars has an option for space scoundrels to suggest how the mercs can still get paid for letting me have the ship... And they really get a kick out of it. Professor's can tell that student in overflow on new haven how to balance out their course load so her life stops sucking (instead of paying her 20000 credits). And of course the guards comment on your background as well. Does file not found have any of that?

I think "File not Found" is great for role-playing purposes if you plan on doing NG+. Just kinda makes sense given what happens after the main story is done and you go through NG+ and all that. Just makes sense for no one to know who are, in a way. Rather than UC security knowing somehow that you were a "Chef" in the past life. Plus it's total Edge Lord status.

It's just 3 levels worth of skills, the backgrounds only matter for flavor dialogue

Hopefully they put out a DLC with craftable unarmed weapons. Uranium knuckledusters that deal radiation damage would be sick.

I kinda wish every class had at least some unique feature instead of just being three free skill points. It doesn't need to be anything major, just something small would be great.

Bounty hunter in S tier is what I was counting on. Easily the best background

Pilgrim might have weak skills, but I think it’s one of the cooler classes from an rp angle. Both because of the story implications (no spoilers but if you know, you know), but also because being some kind of wayward space-hobo is conceptually cool to me and it feels thematically interesting. Anyways, I agree with the placements, given the established criteria. However, I do wonder which class gives you the most flavor dialogue? I went Xenobiologist on my first playthrough and it pretty much only came up in the UC Vanguard quest-line. Are they all like that or do some come up more frequently than others? I’m not sure honestly.

Yeah it's great.

My first character was a Combat Medic so I have specced pistols. It's worth noting that even on very hard pistols can be competitive damage wise but you need to be mindful of their limited range especially before you get 30% more ballistics range from fully investing in ballistics. It's not noticeable in the interiors but on the exteriors you're going to be hit by the damage fall off a lot. A weapon like the Razorback can also help since the base range is significantly higher than most pistols.

I found that long hauler is also pretty decent the extra carry space and the dialogue options are pretty interesting

Maybe, mostly I just used the strongest armor I could find or whatever effects I can find that are good.

I've always done Diplomat for the unique dialogues. That's the only thing that I care about, as 3 skill points is kinda inconsequential. Curious what people's experience with other their class has been.

One of the reasons to pick Professor is that it gives you three Science skills off the bat. At level 2 take another Science skill. At levels 3 & 4 you can put points into Suit and Weapon upgrades. If you devote your first 10 levels into Science, you can take the skill that gives you points in your ship power. Just something to consider if crafting is your thing. I disagree with you on Surveying. That 50m range gives you the option to scan more and faster, often without aggro'ing the critters. Ignore if you go for the "extinction event" method of planetary surveying. Also, and this doesn't have anything to do with your list, but Diplomat and Industrialist are confused. Industrialist doesn't have Commerce but does gave Security. Diplomat has Commerce but not Security. Industrialists are all about making money. Commerce should be THE no-brainer skill to give them. Embassies and intelligence gathering go hand-in-glove. Security should absolutely be in their skillset. Dunno what Bethesda was thinking.

I feel like gangster should have landed in B or C tier. The skills aren't diverse enough with it having 2 from the combat tree.

I think that's fair too.

I picked Explorer for my character, mainly because I prefer a sneaky or pacifist-ish run and I wanted to explore planets as a retirement thing, after I'm done with the questlines and I'm aware most of my gameplay will be just that.

People diss on Astrodynamics, but it enables you to have smaller fuel tanks and weaker Grav drives while still reaching 30LY jump range. This in turn saves a lot of mass, which then cascades to requiring less engine thrust for more mobility or simply more cargo or weapons with the same thrust. Also, probably enables doing Rank 2 Piloting runs, where you stick with A class ships.

Bounty Hunter and Professor each give you three points in one tree. Professor lets you reach tier 2 skills when you hit level three. Bounty Hunter does the same for its respective tree. I think you undervalued Professor because of this.

id like to ask tho if ballistic pistols work so that the pistol cert. and ballistics stack on top of another? cuz then some pistols might be REALLY strong

Yeah they stack on top of each other. You can have the Big Bang work with Ballistics, Shotguns, Particle weapons, and Lasers because it counts as all of those together.

Bounty hunter with Wanted is fun.

Yeah that is a great Role Playing build, and a pretty strong build overall.

The speech options are more interesting (and fun) than the skills.

Bounty Hunter is 100% the best unless you're going for some kind of niche build like melee only, pacifist, etc.

It is a nice class to use.

I think it's wrong to value starting skills when it comes to game where it doesn't matter because of NG+. What is matter - additional content from it. Bounty Hunter unlocks so much very useful dialogs for example. And so does Diplomat.

@ReapeeRon honestly none so far and I'm more of a jack of all trades type of character in rpgs for the most part so I felt that since the pilgrim class had more basic starter skills I went for that one, and no complaints

The combat medic was an interesting choice and did give some good dialog choices but was not the best. Not I have not seen the video yet so personally I got a c ter choice. Yes good choices but there is no real role playing to it that I have seen.

Damn I wish I had 70 euros laying around. Guess I will wait for a sale patiently.
