Starbase - Spaceship Designer Feature Video (Partly Outdated)

Ойындар

This video focuses on Starbase's Spaceship Designer, which enables you to design your spaceship from scratch, take the ship for a test ride and more and all this can be done either alone or with friends. In the video we’ll demonstrate the building process by building a basic ship and by explaining how the Spaceship Designer works while doing so.

    The only thing this falls short of in relation to SE is the YOLOL system. I'm sure it would be easier to get into compared to SE's scripting system, but there is little in the way of easy basic functions like with SE; you could easily link a button to a door and define what you want that button to do without having to change any value fields. Just outright select the function. Or doors can just be interacted with directly. The YOLOL system is not friendly to new people who just want to create basic systems.

    I do not think that darkness is from shadows but rather because the light source is on the other side (ie not all darkening effects come from one object casting a shadow on another). This is a problem faced in several builder games. A head lamp comes in handy!

    My only question from this is how I as a designer would be able to determine if my ship is off-balance. In the video, the problem was super obvious, but the how the solution was arrived at was not. Do we have access to some kind of center of balance diagnostics in the ship builder to determine, or will it just be a trial and error thing? (genuine question, not trying to come off as aggressive)

    As a work around, or even after we get tools to help us balance a ship. You could probably use YOLOL to get a read out on all your thrusters stored into memory chips. Then, try flying the ship in a straight line. If the MFC is using any maneuver thrusters to keep it flying straight, you can store that into memory chips and see which thrusters are outputting the most thrust, and attempt to adjust further from there... but a center of mass + center of thrust would be super helpful. I do think that my technique would still be useful in fine tuning a ship even further, though.

    This Spaceship Designer awesome !!! I have somes ideas for this : - 4:19 or 10:42 The "copy fonction" is cool but why not a "Mirroring fonction" ? - 7:22 When i see that, i image "hidden part fonction" which hide parts for better vison. Another idea, i think of Subsystems. For example, i create many "Cockpit", "Body", "Thruster", all saving like "Subsystems". In the asset browser, i find my "subsytems" which can be reuses in the starship designer. And please, make a space designer like a standalone demo.

    @@FrozenbyteGames another suggestion for ypo: "upgrade/replace button" or tool that replaces a part with it's analog. For example you want to replace some of the level1 thrusters with level 100 thrusters. it would be handy just to select the "upgrade" tool, click on the thruster and select the needed level from the droplist. This will save time. Because you will not have to remove the old thruster, find the new thruster and place and bolt the new thruster.

    Regarding your subsystems idea, they actually already have that in this video. They call them modules. They're just presaved substructures like you're talking about. She uses at least 4 to make this ship. There's one for the windows, the generator, the door, and the maneuver thrusters.. Maybe more that I didn't notice.

  • @antonstezhkin5991

    @antonstezhkin5991

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ganondorf5573 no. I do not mean modules! I mean replacing individual parts with better or similar parts. E.g. you have a module with several yoolol-chips of tier one. You need to replace them all or some of them with yoolol-chips tier 3. In traditional mood you would have to replace each of them with by removing the old chip and pasting a new one and pasting the script after that. And assigning ids to the new chips. With the upgrade tool the tier 1 chip just turns into tier 3 chip with one click. It's id in the network and it's script remans the same. You need only to add a few lines with trygonometric magic in this particilar example. Or why replace the chips? Or you could replace all the light armor of a 400 000t Dreadnaught with heavy armor in just one click. That would be handy!

  • @ganondorf5573

    @ganondorf5573

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@antonstezhkin5991 Ahhhh! I understand now. I honestly don't think this would be as useful as you think it might be. In the case of a chip upgrade, you're going to need to edit the code regardless... (because lower tier chips can't have the code that the higher teir one would enable anyway). You're better off keeping all your code saved as scripts outside of the actual chips. Otherwise, it'll be really hard to review your code or reuse it later. So, you'll probably already be ready to copy and paste the new code in wherever you're making these changes. So I don't think YOLOL chip upgrades are a good example. It's a fundamental redesign, not a simple upgrade. As far as upgrading plates from light to heavy... I don't think plates have tiers of strength. The materials you actually make the plates out of decides their strength as well as how many layers of plating you make. I'm not sure how material type is chosen for plates though. It might be decided directly when you actually fill the blueprint in manually.. or maybe you can set it in the editor. In that case, I do think it should be possible to multiselect plates and change what material they're made of.

That's why Star Citizen, Dual Universe and even Space Engineers continue to make money even though the first two aren't released yet, and Space Engineers wasn't design to offer large scale PVP in the first place. This is great! I was really worried that the editor was going to be awful like interstellar rift but this actually looks really user friendly for the amount of features it has packed in. One thing though is that there needs to be a way to determine if the ship is off balance before you test it. Center of mass and center of thrust indicators should be a thing inside the editor. By the time you add everything you need to test fly the ship you will have already done a ton of work that may have to be undone in order to balance it properly. I would prefer to build the ship while keeping an eye on the com and cot so at the end it comes out balanced without having to move my generator and all the wiring like you did in this video.

    My god, this makes Space Engineers ship building tools look amazing. If all you want is hardcore people to play this game then fine but this really needs a ton of work before it will be any good for an average gamer to use. The UI looks like something from a CAD program!

    Amazing! This game has every single feature I have wanted in a video game, and I can’t wait to make my own ship, crash, then re edit it to be useable! Imagine having a fighter, escape pod, a and a freighter! You could slowly build an empire, pun intended, and even use the space station creator to make a Hall ring or even a Death Star, or even make that a ship with twenty laser put on it!

    Hey, do you think we can get a version if this early, that way while the full game is being finished, we can get familiar with the ship building system, and maybe even send them to the full game. I also think being able to see center of mass an center of thrust, like in ksp, would help with balancing.

    they thought of doing so last year, however the work needed to do so was too much, and would probably delay the game even more. so instead they have published their models for people to use with your 3D modeling software of choice. discord.gg/starbase (the devs and CEO are very active there. if you have any questions, just ask in the FAQ)

    There is a couple of things that my time in other ship builders that I can't quite tell from the video itself: - If I have a space for a 7 long beam but there's only 3 & 4 long beams will I need both or do you have adjustable beam lengths? Does using higher part counts directly effect performance? - Is there a way to change the camera speed? For fine adjustment while building and for traversing across large builds. People are gonna push the ship builder to it's absolute limit. (for that, having a less confined space might work, unless you could hire a larger room or something) - Are we gonna have landing legs / docking connectors? ( I really want deployable landing gear ) Compared to other ships builders (KSP, Space Engineers, StarMade) this looks to be quite the step up

    Lovely tool. I'm so glad we'll be able to make custom modules. I can't wait to build my own complete set of modules and build ships out of it. My only real critique is the window visibility options could use some improvement. Instead of checkmarks, maybe give each window a proper icon, and when it's open highlight it somehow? This would make it much easier to figure out what's what.
