Yeah it was the expanded universe that did the naming definition for force powers and defined them. Which fine it is an inevitability once any story goes beyond 3 movies, the force can't be mysterious forever. I mean if you think about it a Jedi mind trick is the most Sith shit ever, Qui-Gon Jinn used it at least four times just for convenience, once to define the price of an item he wanted to buy lol. Outside of a video game the force is just the force, it's the path that force users take that matters.

I think people are confusing it with Luke using the force to hypnotize them and let him through because that’s what it kind of looks like as well. But, I agree that you can clearly see the one guard holding his hand over his throat and is uncomfortable

THIS is how you show character development without an ounce of dialogue. Luke in a black robe and hood up, walking in and choking the guards with ease tells the audience he has come very far since Empire. If only the sequels took note of how to show character progression instead of ignoring it entirely.

In the novel, it is revealed that Luke displays some of these “dark side powers” to warn Jabba that he CAN use these powers, but had Jabba negotiated, Luke would’ve walked away with Captain Solo and his friends, without a fight. Remember, a Jedi uses the force for knowledge and defense, never for attack (quote Yoda). Luke entered Jabba’s Palace with the true intention that if Jabba could be reasoned with, that would be preferred. But he had a backup place, in the likely event Jabba wouldn’t listen. Luke gave Jabba many chances to agree to terms, and Jabba kept ignoring this “boy.” Also remember, no one has seen a Jedi in YEARS. Jabba figured he has very real chance of losing, and from an outside POV, why would he negotiate? These pirates, thieves and lords work for HIM. If he gives up his prize of Solo and his friends, it’s going to make him look extremely weak and possible for overthrow.

Poor Jabba

Our boy all grown up. From whining about not being able to go to Toshi Station to get some power converters, now calmly and maturely, yet firmly, negotiating for Han's release. He COULD have just gone in saber-blazing, but was grown up enough to at least ATTEMPT diplomacy. He gave Jabba ample opportunity to bargain, so the Hutt has nobody but himself to blame for the outcome.

The introduction to Luke in ROTJ is so well-done. Luke walks in and force chokes the guards, then mind-tricks Jabba’s henchman. It shows how much he’s grown. He now has the power of Vader and the wisdom of Obi-Wan. And they show all that in about 10 seconds.

If they were to rewrite and rechoreographed this film it would have shown luke using the force more often. Rather than it being debatable plus during this film it's implied luke is equal to vader. Only at the end surpassing him. And if luke is equal to vader at the start of the film then its like luke deliberately chooses not to use the force to solve all his problems even though he easily could have used it to freeze everyone in place and walk out with han, leia, chewie and lando. If luke decides to fight boba fett he would just use the force to dodge all his blaster fire. Long story short luke at this point could have easily walked in and out of there unharmed using only the force. If Vader was in that position yes vader would use his lightsaber but only to strike fear into jabba and everyone else present to get his way or kill everyone present but honestly depends on vaders motives

Why the hell did Luke not go in with his Lightsaber? Thinking back I figured he hid it in R2 on purpose, but he just forces his way in (pun intended) it’s not like he was searched…

This is top tier writing here by George Lucas. He nailed Luke and Anakin Skywalker.

Jabba not even being slightly afraid makes sense as he was dealing with actual full fledged jedi before Order 66 and even then the jedi did not meddle in Hutt matters much. Luke has skills but Jabba is very much aware of how strong the jedi once were and he knows Luke is NOT as powerful.

I'm confused. DId Luke use the Force to CHOKE those Gamorrean? I know the original trilogy had limited use of special effects with lightning first being shown in this movie but would Luke really use a dark technique like that? Maybe he did or just put them to sleep. I don't know.

I feel like this whole part is to establish that Luke is starting to teeter closer to the Dark Side like his father. The dark clothes, the threats, and choking out those guards. Without stuff like this, the moment when Luke rejects the Dark Side at the end of the movie wouldn't be as impactful.

This movie was over before it even began lol luke pretty much had annakins abilities and personality. Vader was too old and jabba didn’t have enough men lol luke was pretty much invincible in rotj

With *Lando* already onsite 1st Plan-Dispatch the 2 Driods for *Jabba* as interchangeable servants. 2nd Plan- *Leia* in *Boussh* disguised brings in *Han’s* Wingman *Chewbacca* as a Bounty. 3rd Plan- *Jedi Skywalker* arrives to diplomatically discuss the release of Everyone or die. Definitely a Solid Scheme that almost didn’t work out 👍🏼

I will never forget how impressed I was when I first saw this scene. I was maybe 10 years old, but after Empire Strikes Back I was already deeply in love with the franchise, then in a first few minutes of this movie - after you saw Luke clumsy with the Force on Dagobah and getting his ass kicked by Vader at the end of the last movie - you see him here in a totally different manner, choking guards with no effort at all, so calm and self assured. You knew right away how much he has grown and how powerfull of a Jedi he has become. It was a satisfying feeling :D I love Star Wars!!

Funny that Luke wasn’t that worried about Leia when she was a dance slave.

Luke and Leia disagreed on their plans so they came up with their own. Leia's plan to infiltrate the palace and free Han was unrelated to Luke's plan. Luke only went to the palace because he hadn't heard from Leia in a week.
