Interesting the story behind his reaction. Prowse, who was Vader in the suit, said the line "Obi Wan killed your father" but Lucas pulled Hammil aside before the scene and told him what he was going to have James Earl Jones actually say and to react that way. Hammil was floored and was sworn to secrecy. Only Lucas, Jones, Hammil, I'm guessing probably the editor, and for some reason, Spielberg knew before it hit theaters.

I also love the way he says it as well. There's a weighted pause between "no" and "I am your father", and Vader puts a massive emphasis on "I". This is Vader twisting the knife on Luke, bringing him further to despair

The first time I saw this film at age 11, I cried at the moment Luke screamed “NO” because I was right there with him; I shared his despair at this horrifying news. Obi-Wan and Yoda talked about how great Luke’s father used to be, Luke’s whole motive for becoming a Jedi was his father’s apparent heroism and martyrdom at the hands of Darth Vader … and this reveal just shattered everything, for Luke and for me. A moment I will never forget.

First Anakin loses his mother. Then Anakin loses his pseudo father figure of all of a week. Then he loses his apprentice and feels betrayed by her and the Jedi order. Then he feels betrayed by and loses both his master, and his wife... He blames so many for betraying him. Then he's right there, meeting his son in earnest, going easy on him, offering him the galaxy. And his son decides to flee, or perhaps jump to his death, rather than join him. Something has to finally hit home inside that mask that maybe, JUST maybe, it wasn't everyone else that betrayed Anakin Skywalker. Maybe something was wrong with Anakin from the start.

Imagine being in Luke's shoes for a moment: Luke didn't know who his parents were or what happened to them. Then Obi Wan told him that his father was a Jedi before being 'killed' by Darth Vader, who was responsible for countless atrocities across the galaxy. Then when Luke actually confronts Vader in actual combat and lost the fight, he's mentally heartbroken that his own dad is the very person that conmitted atrocities and served the Empire(who also committed lots of atrocities). Needless to say, Luke has every reason to be shocked right now.

I'm surprised Luke didn't ask more questions about his mother in ROTJ tbh. There was a Expanded Universe novelization about Tatooine Ghost where Leia met Kitster and the rest of Anakin's old friends. I believe there should have been sorta of an alternative one where Luke meets Sabé and the rest or at least most of the Royal Naboo Handmaidens (I know it technically happened but took so long) and finds out about his mother. Leia knows more about Padmé than Anakin. Luke knows more about Anakin than Padmé.

Ok so I actually have a weird star wars experience. As a kid my first exposure to star wars was the clone wars show. I always thought that darth vader was anakins father lol. I showed the star wars movies to my 8 year old son. But I started in order of release. So when we got to this scene, i told him to pay attention. As soon as Vader told Luke that he was his father, the “wait, WHAT!?” From my son was priceless.

The way Vader lowers his arm after Luke jumps, you can tell hes going “Bruh” under the mask-

He delivers the same line even more intensely in his private conversation with Luke on Endor in return of the jedi. I MUST obey my master. When vader Says the line again, he sounds helpless and hopeless, as though he's trying to explain to luke that he's simply not powerful enough to get out from under Palpatine's powerful spell after decades

When luke looks down, I’m not sure if he knows that he’ll live. Which makes his decision even more powerful. He’s risk his life to not join the dark side.

What made this so great was, that it flipped the entire story on its head. Suddenly the idol Luke was aspiring to be turns out to be the vile creature he was hating and fighting all along. It also confirms what the movie has been setting up the entire time, that Luke himself has also the potential to become just like Vader. It's really amazing. That last bit even works if you know. No longer as a twist but as the piece of info that could finally shatter Luke and push him over the edge. He learns at the worst possible moment. Like his father, whom we have seen turn to the dark side, he also could be turned just like that. It works both ways imho and George Lucas is a far greater genius than a lot of people give him credit to be.

I saw this film in the Fourth Grade. My Science teacher decided to show the original trilogy to explain gravity and pressure. When my class and I saw this scene, our mouths gaped open.

I was there! And I still held out hope for the next three years that Vader was the one lying. I thought to myself no way would I believe Darth Vader over Obi-Wan Kenobi. In 1983 I remember the audible gasps when it was confirmed.

My dad watched this in theaters with his twin brother, he said my uncle was the loudest person in the room with Vader revealed to Luke that he was his father. I guess my uncle loudly said “.... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK!!!!! D:” 😂🤣😂🤣😂

“No luke, I am your father” that’s how I remembered it

I remember in a college psych class our professor showed us this clip as an example of the Mandela Effect and everyone laughed at Mark Hamill's "no." I had never seen Star Wars all the way through before. Now watching with context, it's perfect. Imagine the anguish you would feel when you realize the man trying to kill you is the father you thought was dead and had idolized your entire childhood. Such perfect delivery!

I saw it on VHS in the 80s and didn't know the twist. I just assumed this evil man was lying and doing anything to get Luke to turn to the dark side. I didn't realize he was going easy on Luke and was very surprised it was not a big deal with getting one's hand cut off. With ROTJ and the prequels we see its not a big deal, but I was like damn, Luke can't be a jedi now!

If people didn’t watch the prequels before the original trilogy, Darth Vader’s revelation would’ve been planet rocking.

c'mon, one of the worst movie scenes I've seen, it is just bad, I never liked star wars and mainly because its cartoon really doesn't qualify to be taken seriously.

This is actually some very underrated acting by Mark Hamill. As a kid, I was honestly a bit scared by his facial expressions and screaming after Vader's revelation; but when you think about the turmoil of emotions he has to portray - disbelief, anger, terror, betrayal, and presumably physical pain too... It's quite a formidable performance!

Vader: come with me its the only way *Luke falls"* Vader: or you could do that too 😂😂😂

That was some damn fine acting from Mark Hamill once Vader dropped "I am your father" line. Luke knew the moment Vader said it that it was true, but it's so horrible he doesn't want to believe it. Hamill's facial expressions really drive all of that home. Luke indeed *knows* it to be true.

The kid got some stick at the time, but I always thought he did well with a very difficult role, so central to the first trilogy. Unconvincing backstory (possibly intentionally), clunky lines, weird relationship with Leia, strange mixture of all-knowing superhero and naive teen. Hamill found it difficult to get work afterwards, he was too famous. He didn't get "Amadeus" because Milos Forman didn't want Luke Skywalker playing Mozart.

Probably the most iconic scene in movie history. The films were mind blowing as it was, then this scene with Vader in full flex of his powers, the vastness of the setting, then hitting us with the twist. Still blows me away today. Better special effects than today’s movies. Just awesome. Then……Disney.

I remember first watching this on DVD back in 2004 and it was the peak of the OT.

Luke cries about Vader being his dad, Darth Vader's feelings - "that kinda hurt a little"

I love how after Luke scratches his shoulder, Vader’s like, “Fine, ill use 2 percent of my power”

I can only imagine being in the cinema when this came out just hearing the crowd reaction must have been magic

I love that through this whole battle luke is getting violated and the one moment that luke get a hit on Vader he immediately cuts Luke’s hand off

“No, I am your father.” Those simple five words are so iconic. It’s so cool that Star Wars can make simple things so iconic.

The quote from the original movie release is, “No Luke, I am your father” the Luke part is edited out in later releases

I grew up as a homeschooled kid living under a rock, so when i first watched the original trilogy, I had no idea of the story or what star wars was. So this twist really got me.

The reason for that is ‘No, I am your father’ sound odd without the context given by the rest of the dialogue as Vader is saying it a response to what Luke said. ‘Luke, I am your father’ makes more sense on its own so our brains naturally remember it like that
